Ray Gillen is one of my all time favorite Vocalists. What does everyone else think of him? Its a shame that he died so young. Here is a clip from his Sabbath stint, I thought this one would be appropriate since we are on the RJD forum. Ray always said he wanted to be like Dio with Sabbath.

I think he has an incredible voice. You actually sound like him...

I think his voice is too high for mob rules, but the stuff he did with Badlands is bitchen. I couldn't get the Winters Call video to open...that is one of my all time favorite songs...it's just perfect from beginning to end.

Hey alitivity...do you know where I can download some Badlands I want them on my ipod and I can't find them anywhere...maybe I'll have to buy a cd Surprised

And my God...Jake E. Lee's hair Surprised Wink Very Happy Man, those were the days!!

How did Ray die??

He died of Aids, which has lead to so many rumors. He wasnt Gay and his friends and family deny any Drug use, but they have never come forward with an official response to how he got it. I have always had a theory about him sleeping with groupies, but have nothing to substansiate that theory. As far as CDs go There are three Badlands CDs. Badlands, Voodoo Highway, and Dusk. They are all great. I never thought Ray was right for Sabbath, but Badlands was a perfect fit. There is also a bunch of guest apperances on other peoples albums as well as the Sabbath eternal Idol bootleg stuff. You can buy live audio and video from www.raygillen.com and there are for songs on the Debut album of his last Band Sun Red Sun named after the song by Badlands. Hope that helps. There is also a Ray tribute album with other popular vocalists of the area singing Rays songs.

Hetero men get it too, just not as often. In those days, I'm sure a lot of those guys slept with a LOT of groupies...I'm sure he wasn't the only one who got it...

Badlands with Ray Gillen was a great band.

Ray also recorded the entire Eternal Idol album (by Black Sabbath), but when he left and Tony Martin took over, he (TM) re-recorded the vocals.

Rays Eternal Idol is however available as a bootleg, and in my opinion its just as good as the final version with TM's vocals...

It is important to note that Ray knew that Sabbath wasnt the right fit for him and he quit. He wasnt fired for Tony Martin. TM was just the guy who got the job after Ray left. Itwas a wise decision, I wish there were some of the Blue Murder demo stuff floating around, but I havent heard if there is or not. Badlands was the perfect band for his style. He fit that band like a glove. The way they grooved was incredible. The Song Whiskey Dust is Amazing, and the remake of James Taylors Fire and Rain just Blows me away. Top that off with the emotional power of forshadowing his own death, and you've got some of the best music of its time.

I used to have a line I used when I was finished for the night.

"Hey can you get me a glass of water on your way out"

You'd be suprised how many actually got me the glass of water Laughing

I was actually pretty lucky to get out of that time period without anything. I can still remember when my wife got pregnant we had all the tests, and man was that an uneasy feeling. Waiting to see if everything you had done over the years had finally caught up with you. Everything came back okay, and I have only been with her since. On the positive side though I picked up a few tricks along the way that make her a very happy woman Laughing

I am sure Rocker Bob had unlimted women.

Ray Gillen with Badlands was great!
And Jakes guitar was great also.
I have the Sun Red Sun also.
It is good!
I have the Eternal Idol Demos.
I can say they are better than Martin.
I always hated his voice.

I have to disagree with Ray not being a good fit for Sabbath. Having tracked down the Eternal Idol Demos I would say he was a better fit than Tony Martin for two reasons:

1) The Eternal Idol with Ray is for the most part superior to the released version with TM (though no disrespect to TM as he is also a fantastic vocalist) and it shows that the songs were written with him in mind (as I understand it, it's a case of Bob Daisly does it again).
2) The 6 live tracks which come with the demo are excellent, especially Sweet Leaf, Black Sabbath and the Seventh Star material. It is here that Ray shines over TM because whatever Ray has done in the studio, to my knowledge he has produced it live where as TM sound godly in the studio but live, he is very inconsistent on the higher notes.

Although the fit with Badlands is much better - the pairing of Ray and Jake E Lee is one of the strongest I've seen in terms of quality, I often wonder what would have happened if Ray stuck with Sabbath and how much influence he would have had on Sabbath's sound had he wrote more for them.

I must stress that I view TM and Ray as both great singers and no disrespect is intended to TM but Ray is/was one of the best vocalists I've heard with a flexible voice suited to metal and blues and it is a shame that he died as young as he did.

In terms of Badlands, I've only found the first two albums and they are both excellent, I'm hooked on Rumblin' Train, Devils Stomp, Voodoo Highway, Whiskey Dust, Fire and Rain and In a Dream.

You've got to get Dusk! It is Awesome. The song Lord Knows, is jsut chilling. One of my favorite things about Ray with Badlands is the Foreshadowing of his Death. Songs like Lord Knows, and Tribal Moon, are perfect examples of that. I highly recommend this album.

Who cares how he got it. It doesnt take away from his work or him as a human being.
I miss him in Badlands.
