Anyway, even though the setlist is only 8 songs, we cannot say that it is short, as about time, if you consider the length of the songs

Kill The King (5:32)
Mistreated (15:41)
Sixteenth Century Greensleeves (8:07)
Catch The Rainbow (14:46)
Man On The Silver Mountain (13:35)
Stargazer (17:00)
Still I'm Sad (15:05)
Do You Close Your Eyes (10:09)

To say that it is Ritchie's band or that he is great is how relevant to the fact they their setlists were short on how many songs they played and the fanbase itself lost out on hearing many more tracks that could have been played live?

Too much of a good thing is not necessarily a great thing. If Ritchie wanted to play jam sessions in between tracks then fine but if his musical improv does nothing for the actual song being told then it is simply a distraction.

His attitude was that a singer in a 4 piece was 25% or in a 5 piece was 20% therefore that is all that we should hear from the singer. The problem with that is that in any song the singer typically never sings 100% anyway but the musicians play 100% of the time so what the fuck was he talking about? This was simply his way of saying for every track I play I am going to improv the crap out of it and take us away from the story being told. What we got were songs that were hugely bloated in 400%+ increases over their studio time. So were the stories told better by their increased length? In several of those cases it is Ronnie who has added another verse or who is singing with the guitar parts bringing the listener back into the story.

Perhaps the lesser success of Rainbow in the states was not due to Ronnie not singing love songs but the fact that Ritchie wanted to do musicals and forget about the songs themselves.

I think Eddie Van Halen is a great guitar player but if their tour with Roth kicks off with them only playing 8 tracks with Eddie twanging away for 15 minutes each track we are going to have some really pissed off fans. The ones that will be having orgasms will be the quitar players themselves but the rest of us will be going fuck can you move on to the next track please.

We will find out Monday unless someone has some drunken binges over the weekend. It is supposed to be announced Monday.

well i would gladly listen to 10 mins of Improv by Ritchie as he would take me some were with his playing.
Van Halen on the other hand would be rather boring i dont even like 10 mins solo per gig.
He doesent really go any were just aload of tapping & squealing.
But he is awsome guitarest.

We are talking 10 minutes PER track. I have no problem with the standard guitar 10 minute solo although I would rather have them all jam instead of having a drum solo and a guitar solo thrown in somewhere and lose half a song.

At work our client is kicking us out of our current area and putting us in another. I have been going through the junk that others have left behind. I found in one box How The West Was Won. These are live tracks from 1972 at the Forum and long beach arena, Dased and Confused is like 25 minutes long and if the object was for you to be dased and confused after listening to it well then ... mission accomplished. Each of the tracks have extended guitar work but most of the tracks sound different than their studio counterpart. One can expect that but these are way the fuck off in some cases.

I have shitloads of Rainbow boots from those years. Ritchie is not doing really impressive solo work for each of those 10 minutes. So why not just give us ONE 10 minute mark of something really impressive. And this isn't well Ritchie's worst day is everyone else's best day. We need to lower the hero worship here.

I do agree, one 10 minute solo is enough, though the work on "Made in Japan" is almost, almost I say again, all brilliant.

really couldnt agree more with you!! I'd rather have an excellent trail-blazing version of a song which in a whirlwind of 3 minutes the band manage to rip through a version of 16th Century Greensleeves that leaves you hanging on the edge of your seat than have a 3hr long version where Ritchie sits and plays classical music for half an hour before they even get into the song.

Totally right in the Zep case btw, and it's even worse on Song Remains The Same...indeed it does....for 26 minutes.

by the way, you forgot in the Rainbow setlist:

- Starstruck (played bit of it in the middle of MOTSM)
- Self Portrait (for instance New York 12 Nov 75, but all 75 concerts I know)
