I have really been into UFO for a long time, and during the late 70's and early 80's they ruled the metal charts. They were so much better than all the immitators that came after them. Michael Schenker is still the best hard rock guitarist ever, with Eddie Van Halen a close second.
I saw him in concert a couple years ago with his band and he is still frightening.
I saw him a couple years before that with the UFO reunion tour and it was amazing. Paul and Phil were still rockin' and they have a new album out with Vinnie Moore which is excellent.
Plus, the Walk On Water album was one of the best reunions ever - check it out! _________________ Bass guitarists hold it all together. |

I saw The Black Crowes open for MSG back in '90 (at the Trocodero in Philly), and the Crowes kicked their asses.
I guess "young & hungry" beats "old & bloated"... kind of like when Sabbath had Van Halen open for them back in the day.
In all due respect, UFO DEFINITELY had some awesome moments in rock history. |

I love the Force it album, that is one of my all time fav albums his work in that is far beyond what most guitarists were doing at the time and sounds just as flashy today. I saw MSG with Firehouse, Havana Black and Great white yaers ago and it was a killer show. _________________ GUITARGOD |

UFO will be played long after the Black Crowes have disappeared (haven't they already?) They may be past their peak but they keep going strong and Schenker just gets better - things he is playing now he could have never played in his 20's. _________________ Bass guitarists hold it all together. |

Never got the whole Micheal Schenker thing. I played with a guy in Detroit - David Neil Cline that loved him. I thought he must be something special. Then I saw him play with Ratt, which I was a little confused about, and Warren Dimartini Smoked him. Ive heard the UFO stuff and I think they are lame by comparison to other top bands of the era. Page, Blackmore, Nugent, Iommi. Schenkers not even on my top 50 list. But in his defense, Im a singer, What the F... do I know _________________ Check out Al Diamond Phillips/Nevermet on the web

Sorry, He doesnt do anything for me, Did I forget to mention Thin Lizzy, talk about a band that had some great guitar players. Lets not forget that Dio also had an incredible Guitarist in the 80's Vivian will always be my favorite. _________________ Check out Al Diamond Phillips/Nevermet on the web

Its all about different tastes...the debate about who is the best is pointless...becoz you will hear different from what I hear...I don't have much opinion of Viv....its 2007 and he's done nothing since the 80s.
Thin Lizzy was a great band....I like all of their guitar players. |

I think Schenker is the technically best guitarist ever. He never makes pointless noise like many guitarists listed here, his leads always make sense and you could write every one of them out like a Bach concerto. Plus he never went the Eddie/Holdsworth clone way with the whammy bar like everybody else and their uncle with a Floyd Rose.
To each his own I guess. Was never that impressed with Gary Moore, to be honest. I thought his attempts to play blues were lame, and any real blues man would have said - what's with all the notes? Does have great tone, though. _________________ Bass guitarists hold it all together. |

I here you on Viv, he had such great potential, and some great work with Dio. I never understood why he just decided to quit playing. I know he's still with DL, but thats not really playing. As far as Schenker goes, you're right about taste. I grew up in Detroit in a time when there was a real culture clash between the Motown thing, and the great Hard Rock from the area. Some where between the two came guys like Nugent who could shread, but still had feel. Technical guys like Schenker just dont do it for me. I need a little soul. _________________ Check out Al Diamond Phillips/Nevermet on the web
