Saying someone is better live than in the studio is never a disrespect, it is a compliment. To me, metal was made to be heard live. Though with most metal artists there is a huge contrast between their studio and live work.

Ozzy for example is much better in the studio because they can mask much of his shortcomings as a vocalist. Live, I have seen Ozzy really stink it up, and in the early 80's he was sometimes singing with back tracking or just flat out lipsynching in some shows.

Judas Priest on the other hand are the total opposite. Their studio stuff is no where good as it is live. You can't really tell how great Halford is until you hear him live. (unfortunately now, his voice is nowhere as good as it was in this prime). Priest IMO is the greatest live metal band of all time.

Dio on the other hand is one of those artist that is just great both ways. Songs I think are better live for Dio are the ones he did with Rainbow and Sabbath. I think Heaven and Hell (the song) is much better live. I like how Dio adds the extra verses in that one. Children of the Sea is another great live tune. Actually anything Dio does live is great. He is just a great artist no matter where you put him. He probably sounds great singing in the shower.

Oh man i can't agree with Halford not being as good now, his solo stufF (Halford) IS way beyond what he did in priest and he kicked ass in priest too. All good stuff and as far as live goes Unleashed in the East is my all time fav, that album ROCKS HARD!

Almost anything that DIO sings live are better than studio.. without saying of course that the studio versions aren't great...

You already mentioned Heaven & Hell and Children of the Sea..
What about:
Don't Talk To Strangers
We Rock
Sacred Heart
Mob Rules (Live Evil)
Holy Diver.......

And lots of other songs, but also recently songs like Fever Dreams are better live... Actually the only song i like the studio version more than any of the live versions is the Man On The Silver Mountain..

I like the Halford stuff too. What I meant was his physical voice is nowhere what it was in the 80's or early 90's. It is a ashame too. Halford was just a freak in his prime. Halford just has not taken care of himself or his health in recent years. He smokes which is taboo for a vocalist. His smoking has really affected his range. He really gets winded in some songs. Halford is still a legend and my all time favorite metal vocalist. I just wish he took care of himself like Dio has.

Here is a good example of Halford then and now ...

This clip is from 91 doing Painkiller. He is just sick and inhuman. Just listen to the last minute of this song during the last chorus "Pain ... pain ... killleeeerrr!!!!!" Listen how awesome he is ...

Now listen to this clip from 2005 doing Painkiller. Listen to the same part of the song (the last minute). Now he can't hit those same highs, so he screaches and his voice sound rough. Occasionally he will hit a high like the old days but it takes a lot out of him.

BTW, I have seen Priest ever tour since the Screaming for Vengeance tour. Priest are still great to watch and IMO the greatest metal band of all time. Halford's voice just started taking dive right before the Priest reunion. I first noticed it on his last Halford tour.

More than Halford, I believe that Geoff Tate from Queensryche had an even better voice than Rob Halford, but Geoff lost his voice entirely by 40. Danzig had incredible pipes up until the mid 90's as well. James Hetfield lost his voice about 7-8 years ago. The list invariably goes on and that includes Ronnie since 2005.

better songs live than studio

from sacred heart(the dvd)
king of rock n roll
heaven and hell

from a special from the spectrum dvd
mystery
egypt(the chains are on)
the mob rules

i think for me the reason are the guitarists and what their playing live and sometimes improvising and adding extra elements or extending the length of the solos.doug, craig and viv are good at this.studio recordings sound structured and ends sometimes fading out instead of a stopping point.

Well... that's a difficult question.
I think everything Dio sings is awesome both live and studio.
Anyway, I prefer the live versions of "Heaven And Hell", "Time To Burn", "Mob Rules", "Children Of The Sea", "The Last In Line", "Catch The Rainbow", "Stargazer", "Man On The Silver Mountain" (all Rainbow songs because I love Ritchie's improvvisations), "Wild One" (I'm listening to a bootleg of the LUTW tour recorded in San Diego and this live version of Wild One is wonderful!!!!), "Gypsy", "Stand Up And Shout", "I" and a lot of other songs!!!!

Magic!

Mario
