i've got this one dual-cd called, 'holy diver live'... it was recorded live in 1995....

it covers a lot of material, and i really like the guitarist (aldrich)... it also has rudy sarzo on bass...

dio's voice might have fallen off a tad in raw power, but he more than made up for it with alternate phrasings to the original material...

it was cool the way the drum solo (simon wright?) had a classical piece piped in, like cozy powell used to do...

did i mention i _really_ like the guitar playing on 'holy diver live?'

just phreaking outstanding... brilliant...

aldrich not only displays phenomenal chops, but he also does some of the small things, like seemingly switching to a single-coil pickup for 'man on the silver mountain'...

it's time for me to check out some of these other albums, written of here... 'strange highways' will probably be the next one...

The following is my top five:

1. Dream Evil - my favourite DIO album ever and one of my favourite H/M ever. Together with "1987" of Whitesnake, according to me it's the best album released on 1987 (and a lot of bands recorded album on 1987... Dokken, Vow Wow, Keel, Motley Crue, etc...). Craig Goldy's work (actually he was Goldie on 1987) is great and, also thanks to that album, he's my favourite DIO guitarist. Moreover, the Dream Evil Tour has been the best ever! I got some bootlegs of that period and they're ace (also if the quality isn't very good!). The most famous bootleg of the Dream Evil Tour is "Where Eagles Blare", recorded at Milan... the audio quality is bad but the concert is awesome!

2. Holy Diver - Really nothing to say, one of the greatest H/M albums in the history!

3. Sacred Heart - IMO it's very underrated! All the tracks are beautiful and their sound it's a little more "Hair", do you agree? Think at songs like the wonderful "Rock'n'Roll Children" or "Hungry For Heaven"...

4. The Last In Line - another masterpiece that could be considered as the sequiel of "Holy Diver".

5. Lock Up The Wolves - Awesome album from the first to the last second. Really underrated, but - without doubts - it contains some great songs like "Wild One", "Born On The Sun", "Between Two Hearts", the title track, "Why Are They Watching Me" and "My Eyes" that are difficult to forget!
Of that tour I got only one bootleg recorded on 1990 in San Diego that I suggest you to buy, it's great (very good quality) and it's not very hard to find. I think there are some other bootlegs of this tour but they're higly rare and hard to find, infact I didn't find them anywhere!

Can't name just one, but three are outstanding ones..

Last In Line, Magica and Killing The Dragon just rock.

Rhino I must say we think alot alike it's hard to compare the players on each album evryone brought something different and Ronnie knows what colors to use when making his art. And I never thought Ronnie ever used songs as fillers because you could pull the so called comercial songs and put in a so called filler and have it just as popular. I know when I put a disc on I play the whole thing if you don't you cheat yourself of the best stuff on the disc. I can't single out one as my fav there all my favs for different reasons so to pick one is not fair to the rest

My favorite DIO albums.

1. Last in Line - The title track is simply one of the best songs period, the keyboard part that goes along with the song couldn't be more perfect for the song and overall feel it was meant to give. Very good production, could stand the test of time no matter how old it is.
2. Holy Diver - Great debut album, song after song is great.
3. Lock up the Wolves - I heard this album very late in the 90's as i lost touch with Dio after Dream Evil. But this album has my absolute favorite DIO song - My Eyes. The whole album i like, not a song i don't like. Simon added a nice touch to the album, he didn't make me miss Vinny too (who both Simon and Vinny are big inspirations for me as a drummer)
4. Strange Highways - when i first heard this, i was BLOWN away! Very heavy, very dark CD. Slow, melodic and powerful. I have heard some slamming of TracyG on this site, but i thought he did well with this album, he has a great classic sound.
5. Sacred Heart - I see Dio fans are mixed on this album as i was. At first i didn't like it, shelved the cassette, then years ago broke it out again after i realized i have missed out on "how to listen to a record" dont give it one listen, give it several chances are they will grow on you.

Those are my top five, although i like Magica a lot, killing the dragon and Man on the Moon is growing on me more and more. Angry Machines is the only album i havent given a fair chance , yet.

I would like more live cds though, possibly some retro live stuff, like the whole Donnington 83 show, philly 84, i have a great FM Broadcast of a Lock up the wolves show in dallas and one other, i have so many Dio boots, but would much rather have official releases.

Kinda self explanatory. Good metaphors, awesome guitar solos, Dio at his best.

You should look into some of his lesser known stuff, that's where it really starts to get good. Try, Killing the Dragon, Master of the Moon, Magica, Dream Evil, etc.

As for me, my favorite Dio album would have to be Dream Evil. I seriously find every song on that album to be full if insanely catchy riffs, powerful vocals, and not to mention some awesome keyboard parts! Overlove, Sunset Superman, All The Fool Sailed Away, Naked in the Rain, just all amazing songs that I can listen to wherever, and whenever, and enjoy them no matter what.
