Give your own interpretation of any Dio song here

I'll start with a Black Sabbath song he sang for:

Sins of the Father: Dehumanizer

I am the crazy man who lives inside your head

This line is a reference to our subconcious, and he means the insanity that dwells with in each one of us.

But I think I'm breaking through the wall

This means that the "you" in the song is slowly going insane, either schizophrenia, bipolar, teenage depression, extreme hunger, unanswered sexual desire, anything

You are the innocent convicted of the crime

"The innocent" refers to a sane person who has to suffer
"convicted" and "crime" are not the way we think of them
Every person has accused themselves of something
This refers to some one who begins to seriously criticize themselves

No one was ever there to catch you when you fall

Sometimes people who are insane are alone, "no one" refers not to no person, but a single person, the "you" in the song. The "you" had to rebuild him/herself

I see the diamonds
For some reason, the insane can see different things than the sane

But you only see the rock

The "rock" is something plain and worthless, the "diamonds" in the previous line are representing power

I need to run but you only crawl
The inner person needs to take power, and the depressed ego won't let it happen...I'm sure we've all felt like that before.

It's time to open up all the doors that you keep locked
The inner ego is trying to figure out why the depressed ego is the way it is. This is a reference to Freudian psyhchology, that Freud thought everyhting was a conflict that stemmed from childhood. They were bottled in up in a person and determined his/her peculiarities
Child conflicts are the "doors that you keep locked"

Nobody gives without a take
The inner person is trying to get the depressed ego to get what he/she wants but in order to get more of what he she wants.

Let's take it all
In other words, "let's take everything our heart desires"

You've been twisted into pieces by the hands of your emotions

"You've" let your heart kill "your" brain, and now the inner ego must take over in order to preserve life....a change in either lifestyle, surroundings, personality, or being

How much longer are you gonna pay for yesterday
"How much longer are you gonna" take the shit that's handed to you on a silver platter? Why do you put up with it? Let me control

Sins of the Father
This line means something different later on in the song, but another reference to psychology....genetic inheritance of mental problems

One more crucifixion

Just another suffering...here the Sabs are telling us that everone suffers.

One more cross to bear
Here they tell us that everyone survives there problems. If they didn't, these two lines would have been in reverse order. What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger, right?

You're a hole in a photograph
You might as well not be in the memories you are because "you're"
so depressed

Go on- lose it in the city
Go ahead, lose your virginity or marriage or relationship for one night with a whore.....lose your life in an alley knife fight.....the city

The city can feel no shame

Why would the whore care what she's taken, what would your murderer care?
You're the only one who will feel the "shame", the pain

see the world with electric eyes

See the world with lifeless "eyes"..see it and don't care
A camera only takes pictures, it doesn't care what it sees.

They call it mystery
The "mystery" is referring to the admiration that a child feels for his/her parents.......love, if you will
And also to teenage rebellion against the parents
And also the strive to not be like them in early adulthood

but any fool could see

"Any" observer can tell what is happening

You thought he walked on the water
A child, in childhood, often views his parents as gods
But that image is easily shattered in teenagehood

and if the pain was gone
When you manage to execute the pain for the murder of the depressed ego

and you were free to run away and get out
Freedom to escape the past, the chains, a world left behind....to reach power.

Would you get out of here or do you really care
Will "you" leave your life "or do you" mind it at all
A change in surroundings is often always needed.

it's not safe or easy
Life isn't "safe or easy" Every one knows that, but living safe and easy is to have miserable life. Living on "the edge of the blade" is the way to truly experience life. Living no lies and you won't pass through the valley of tears

and maybe when you're gone you just won't belong at all
You'll learn that the old life was not the life for you. No piece of any puzzle went missing.

You're the only witness to the murder of an angel "You're the only witness" to when you first lost your innocence. It might have to a whore, to pornogoraphy, to any other form of evil, but you were the only one there for that moment that you moved forward

how much longer are you gonna pay for yesterday
Again, "how much longer are you gonna" put up with what happened to you years ago. Fix yourself. You killed the angel, you can fix yourself.

sins of the father

What the parent did wrong. Another reference to Freudian psychology.

It's just another crucufixion one more cross to bear
go on lose it in the city, the city can feel no shame take a look a t the world you've got electric eyes

The death of those that do not follow this advice...there angel is murdered every day as they contemplate suicide and whore hiring.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who listens this intensly to his music. I am always analyzing it, or applying it to my life..well not all songs.
That is one thing about RJD's music in all forms, is that a lot of songs can mean different things to different people.

This is what I hear when I listen to Evil on Queen Street..

Spent the night on the road
And never saw the miles go
Running away
I've got to get free from myself

Miles represent years of running from stuff I need to deal with

How stories were made to be told
And here's the one that I know

So many stories of abuse..

I can't hide it anymore
There's evil on Queen Street

I can't stuff it anymore, tried to just let it go,
but this evil is still affecting my life..

I saw the house in the dark
It seemed to say come touch me
I've got a heart
Open the door to my soul
Climb to the top of my stairs
And look into my windows
I can be your wishing well
There's no evil on Queen Street

The house in the dark is my emotions,
the rest is the process of healing with me
being my own healer, then finally the evil and painful past
is not rearing it's ugly head anymore..

Let me in
I can warm in the heat of your fire
It's no permanent sin to be bad
If you're sorry

This is the memories of all the perpatrators trying to
get back in and cause destruction in my life..

Let me go - you're a promise that comes from a liar
I don't know - if I ever can wash all the evil away, hey

This is me fighting back, but scared that I will never fully heal..

Struck a match at the dark
It screamed no, no I love you
Together we're strong
You always believed what I'd say, hey
But now the heat of a flame
Starts me to remember
There's no evil - no more evil
No evil on Queen Street
Just smoke in the air
No evil anywhere
No evil on Queen Street

This is later...haven't gotten to this part yet..gunna take some work. To me it would mean to be healed.

There is shootings in schools all the time...I would not say he was a prophet.

Did someone say Ronnie is a prophet? That's a little silly. I think he'd even laugh at that. He's an amazing man who is, IMO, truely magical to be around, but no prophet...

Woops, I'm sorry obscene, I must have missed that in what you wrote. I didn't re-read it before I posted. But like I said, IMO. If you believe he is a prophet, then to you he is one.

Could the line in Holy Diver "You can see his stripes but you know he's clean" mean that someone did wrong in the past but is innocent now?????????????

That lyric is a great example of the POV poetry we were talking about in the Satanic lyrics thread.

It could mean anything but each person sees what they most identify with and sounds cool while doing it. Genius we tell ya!

We think it could reference the scars we all bear. We were damaged(striped) but we grew from the experience, thus elevating or cleansing it. Just our POV....

I actually got the chance to ask him about this song....My interpretation is off just a tad....but that's the thing about his lyrics...he can take some phrase he hears or sees somewhere and turn it into a song that touches people deeply....I won't say what he said....I will leave it a "mystery".

The song in of itself is about a world that will not let their savior figure go. He wants to go off to another world but they won't let him. He tells them they are safe but they keep pointing to evil that is not there. And he keeps pointing out that there are no stripes.

This is a very interesting post. I like it a lot because it gives us the chance to share our thougts on what songs mean to us.
I personally believe that Ronnie's lyrics in general are some of the most meaningful I've ever heard. You can tell not only by the way he sings the song with emotion, but also how he writes the lyrics with just as much emotion.

He is a very talented person at what he does.

I personally would love to hear someone's interpretation of "Man on The Silver Mountain" and "I Could Have Been a Dreamer."

For me, those songs have more depth in them than what they come accross as on the surface.

I believe the "man on the silver mountain" is more of a symbolic song about a person who represents all truth, or the "divine" answer to all of life's questions.

"I could have been a dreamer" is my favorite Dio song, and really I believe it represents maybe a goal? or a "dream" Laughing no pun intended.

I'd love to hear your interpretations.

edgeoftheworld. Very Happy

A quick albeit half-formed interpretation for me of the song I is that the lyrics reflect the tensions in the band that broke up the Dio-sabbath the first time and proceeded to split the band for a second time.

To me the lyrics can be seen as both Iommi and Dio stating that whilst although together they are a strong unit that they both feel they can stand alone and be successful without one-another - although this may have been written from Dio's viewpoint, it is applicable to both as both have been successful individually - Iommi with subsequent line-ups of Sabbath and his solo projects and Dio with his own band.

However to me this song is quite empowering and motivating - to be willing to stand alone for your beliefs and conviction and not be afraid to let what others may think sway you from what you believe to be right or prevent you reaching your goal.

Also this song seems to me to be a dramatic way of releasing tension, anger and frustration through enjoying the song and channeling these emotions into the music rather than unfairly lashing out or letting the feelings consume you.

As I said, just a quick, half-baked interpretation but one which always jumps to my mind when I here this thunderous belter of a song - uplifting and expressive - motivating and calming.
