I recently finished the excellent Black Sabbath: Doom Let Loose and in it, Ronnie makes some comments about always thinking that Cozy's style of playing never fit with Sabbath. I think that's a load of you know what, to be quite frank. I think Cozy was PERFECT for Sabbath and really made the albums he was on seem that much better. What do you guys think?

I think the Sabbath that Cozy played in shouldn't have been called Black Sabbath to begin with. Cozy was a fantastic drummer, but unfortunately played on some crap albums. Cozy certainly isn't the problem with a crap release like Forbidden. But Bill Ward is THE drummer when it comes to Sabbath. And Cozy doesn't really sound much like Bill.

Cozy fit great with the Sabs - what screwed Forbiddon was recording it and producing it in 3 days.

well, Bill Ward, the traditional Sab. drummer does use more of a jazz style in his drumming while Cozy wasn't as jazzy which leads to a difference in sound and style.

as for whether he was good in the band...not sure.

Ward did have a more "Jazzy" style - but Cozy never had a problem plaing wards' stuff - he sounded better than Appice. Appice would get on my nerves sometimes, he'd drown out the others with his weird "come in on one and go out on 1&" rolls, or his "single stroke, 16 beat, super snare rools" - plus that dude couldn't come up with a decent break that didn't sound like you had heard it before.

I think Appice is the best drummer I ever heard. I love Ward and powell but they are no Appice.

I'd prefer if the conversation stayed in tune with the question being asked. This topic is not about how good Appice is. If you guys want, make that another topic. This is about if Cozy fit with the style of Black Sabbath. Please keep answers relative to that question.

I think Cozy was excellent in Sabbath and did a fantastic job particularly on the under-rated Headless Cross album.

Cozy had a style of his own which to me is instantly recognisable and he stands out to me as being one of the genres top drummers.

Sabbath + Ward = o.k

Sabbath + Appice = Better

Sabbath + Cozy = Super

Cozy was great ! but didnt really fit playing the classic Sabbath songs. He was much better suited to Rainbow .

The best drummer EVER? He's your top pick out of all drummers in the world?

Sorry but I gotta go with The Professor, Neil Peart and QR's Scott Rockenfield. There are dozens of superb drummers out there and I like several of them but no one touches these two. Except John Bonham.
