Question about the song Between Two Hearts...

Okay so this song is really great IMO, but it takes such a wild turn in the last half and I always wonder what in the heck it means.

The first half of the song is so clearly about a woman in an unhealthy relationship, but addicted to this guy, at least that's my interpretation of it.

Then he sings, "join in the big parade, here comes the camera, do you look as good as your sister? Smile at the animals, they should be the ones in the cages..."

Okay, what do you think he means by that? It bugs me because I love that song.

I guess the first half of the song looks at this you-know-what kind of relationship (and don't we all know what he's talking about here...?) from the inside, from the perspective of the individuals involved in that relationship.

Then when the verse starts again with the line "put on your party faces" the song looks at how this kind of relationship is presented to the world outside. The perfect couple.. Here comes the camera. Never let them see where you actually stand. Do you look as good as your sister... major concern in this sort of women. It's more important what you look like than who you are when who you are is no longer something you can be proud of.

It's about presenting a user-friendly surface to everyone, even when you're in the most desperate of situations. Play the game by the rules. Don't let them see through that surface or else they might realize how miserable you are in fact. There's nothing you fear more than that. Always present yourself as strong and shiny and desirable so they will respect you, you'll earn a reputation.

Smile at the animals, they should be the ones in the cages - when in fact you are the one who's imprisoned in your own home-made cage.

That's the bridge for the song to move back to the inside perspective. Rainy Sunday - call that never comes. It's about feeling lonely and abandoned, your dreams of someone who might perceive and respect you as the person you really are, these dreams are just illusions. This call that may rescue you never comes. You'll be captured forever between love and desperation, caught in the middle, unable to make a move.

I guess that's what this song is about.

I think this song is kind of an example why 99% of Dio's music isn't mainstream.

My husband doesn't understand the degree in which I love RJD's voice and my passion for the music, but I had him trapped in the car for an hour with my ipod connected to the stereo, and had him listen to Rainbow Eyes, Shame on the Night, Stargazer, Nevermore, SOTSC, One More for the Road and Between 2 Hearts. Each time I put a song on, I would say, "oh my God, this is the most amazing song" because they all are to me.

After listening, he completely agreed that RJD has an amazing voice. So I asked him why in the hell isn't this stuff played on the radio? WTF? He said that most people aren't into wizards and that kind of stuff and that most people like music that relates to their life in some way. Not all I say...Zeppelin's Cashmere hardly relates and can't hold a candle to SOTSC, and so many others.

I told him if you listen, most of it does relate.

Okay, back to my point. Between 2 Hearts is a song that could be a hit, which would make money and bring more people to the shows, but takes that turn into "just fucking wierdness" as my husband said, that unless you are a Dio fan and understand that he will take you to places where you have to think, most people would change the channel.
