Thy Light

A truly amazing one man band, I'm really looking forward to a CD release from him. I think the first song is the only one with vocals, but still, his stuff is excellent.

There is alot of DIO fans who are into a little Doom Metal..I am one of those fans, there is also and alot of Doom Metal fans that love DIO's music as well.

Here is some quotes I have read on a Doom Metal forum about DIO.
Quote:
Dio proves his vocal supremacy on the new H&H disc.... -bows-

Quote:
I am listening to Magica just now. Great album, probably underrated
heavy with catchy hard rock melodies.

Quote:
he's the fucking man i saw him once solo and once with sabbath (heaven and hell). he's got a few doomy cuts for sure, like strange highways, i haven't heard the whole album though

Quote:
Dio is THE metal vocalist. All the Rainbow albums with him are their best output, all Sabbath's albums are their best output. His solo albums aren't bad either Wink

Quote:
If Ozzy is the Prince of Darkness, then Dio is the voice of God's anger...Best Metal vocalist there was, there is and there fucking will ever be. Can't wait to see him with Black Sabbath (I'll never call this band H&H, I don't buy Sharon Cuntsborne shitte) at the Hellfest \m/

Quote:
Ozzy was the worst singer Sabbath ever had. I loved all the Dio, Martin and Gillan albums (not heard the Hughes one yet).

Quote:
Two of my friends hate Dio's singing because "he's too epic". Seriously, what the fuck?!? One of them has said, and I quote: "Dio is only famous because of Tenacious D". And when I said Black Sabbath were going to be at Download this year, they went off on an "Ozzy is Black Sabbath, this isn't Sabbath blah blah blah" rant. Morons the lot of them. But I do know that when they see the show they are going to change their minds quicker than their underwear.

Quote:
He's better than most people half his age...

Quote:
Yep. He's in my top ten aswell. He is incredible. Although a lot of people take Black Sabbath with Ozzy as the 'only' Black Sabbath, I do enjoy the releases with Dio on and I am REALLY looking forward to the next Heaven and Hell release.
Last year, I saw Heaven and Hell at Graspop and it was the best concert of that year...come to think of it, best concert up till now...

The reason I have posted this becoz I know some fans not all fans will get their knickers into a twist about Heaven and Hell playing Doom like metal on the new cd.
The only reason that I like Doom Metal is becoz I like 'thicker' or 'heavier' sound and just remember alot of Doom Metal is influenced by Black Sabbath...now that can't be a bad thing. Wink

This is becoming a huge favourite of mines just now.

Doom:VS ''Dead Words Speak''
by Draconian Guitarist-Johan Ericson
Line-up
Johan Ericson - all instruments and vocals
Two of my favourites from the cd are...
Doom:VS - The Light That Would Fade
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tC_GEyb7DgY
DOOM:VS - Empire of the fallen
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syzaVdQ9wUU

Quote:
DOOM:VS is a funeral-driven doom/death project that should be checked out by all fans of early 90’s doom metal scene. Although “Dead Words Speak” is darker and less accessible than its predecessor, Johan has created yet again an opus that is masterly executed on all accounts, and with this release he proves that he’s one of the leading extreme Swedish metal musicians. Once drawn into this dark, melodic, and epic world of despair, it is uneasy to find your way out until the end. The desolate soundscapes and impenetrable atmospheres will leave you feeling utterly scared and alone...

Yeah, my copy of Death Magic Doom just arrived in the mail. It's fantastic. This and The Devil You Know are definitely getting the most plays from me as well.

My personal favorite is "House of 1000 Voices" at the moment.

I listened to your Thy LIght link, and I think they are not doom rock. It sounds like classically influenced gothic rock to me - but maybe that's just me. They are very good.
The "Candemass" link now that was some doom. But it basically sounded exactly like the "Black Sabbath" track to me, so that just shows you how much influence the band still has to this day. People are still trying to make records as good as that first one.

Give me Rammstein anyday - they just crush the average Doom metal band.
Check out their live DVD Volkerball - staggering.

Rammstein v Candlemass
Don't get me wrong...I like Rammstein but their style is not even close to Candlemass...you could have said Whitesnake or even Take That ....their music genres and styles are a 1000 miles apart.
So you are saying that industrial metal is better than Doom Metal.
Any band that uses a drum machine should not even have the grace to be called any kind of Metal and Rammstein do use drum machines alot. And to say that Candlemass are an average Doom Metal band means you don't know what you are talking about.
Black Sabbath are not just the God Fathers of Heavy Metal they also influenced Doom Metal.Lots of different styles of music will come and go but Heavy Metal and Doom will be around longer than you or I. Wink

Actually very surprisingly Rammstein uses drum machines and sequencers VERY little. They play all the stuff live and in studio, just with a mechanical feel.
But you're right they are not the same genre - and neither band is doom anything.

This is one subject that will be discussed/argued about til the end of time, ironically enough. Laughing

It really is all opinion in the end but this is one subject I know a little about Wink

As my "mentor of doom knowledge" John Perez, of Solitude Aeturnus,an individual whose name appears on more vintage doom special thanks than any other person alive, taught me,everything basically begins with orig. Black Sabbath and the lesser known American band Pentagram.

From these sprang Witchfinder General,Saint Vitus and Trouble

These can all be called standard doom or classic doom, characterized by their slow to mid tempo sounds and more raw sound.

Next comes what most of us in the know call epic doom, more progressive with faster parts and more melodic soaring vocalists, bands like Candlemass,Sorcerer,Solitude Aeturnus,Solstice etc.

In my discussions with John,he pointed out how early Uriah Heep,Rainbow and Dio era Black Sabbath are the forerunners of the epic doom scene,Solitude,in particular is heavily influenced by Dio era Sabbath.

Uriah Heep, with their efforts at being one of the heaviest bands of their time, and their early mystic/poetic fantasy lyrics and the melodic power of vocalist David Byron, along with the Dio fronted Rainbow, are the proto-metal beginnnings of epic doom metal, as well as power/prog metal .

In doom circles I have travelled in,it is basically accepted that Black Sabbath is the center of it all, from orig Sabbath you get the slower, more raw sound, and from the doomy, somber, more melodic side of Dio era Sabbath, you get the more progressive polished sounding bands not afraid to,as Sabbath did later, speed it up a bit.

Bands with growling vocals are usually termed death/doom or vice versa or called heavy gothic doom.Over the last several years the term "funeral doom" has surfaced, and there is arguement about the exact criteria of it.When I hear the term,I think of the clear vocal era of My Dying Bride,While Heaven Wept etc but most seem to view it as being associated with having death or growling vocals.

I mostly stick with the older bands, founders like Paradise Lost and Novembers Doom,I do like newcomers Daylight Dies though, they opened for Candlemass last year and really impressed me with their vintage gothic doom (my chosen term) sound.
