| Strange highways to me is a damn good HEAVY METAL ALBUM..the important word here is HEAVY..It is a lot heavier than most DIO albums and this is what a lot od fans don't like, to me it shows how talented ronnie is.........a song like 'EVILUTION' on highways is a great example of a hard, heavy, dark metal song. |

Very well said, Brollachan!
And I agree with you Stargazer. Someone once said that the arrangements on the songs from AM were "difficult". But it IS a testament to RJD's talent to be able to still dominate those "difficult" tracks.
Besides, the genre is called HEAVY Metal. And that's how I like mine. HEEEEEEEAAAAVVYY!.
Electronic-sounding keyboards (from the 80s) seem to soften hard-edged rock. I am no fan of Bon Jovi. I think the industry at that time put pressure on all their acts to get more of that pop keyboard sound. We can thank the New Wave for that. If keyboards can't have more of a classic sound, then they have no business in HEAVY Metal, IMHO.
Incidentally, I reinstalled Sacred Heart back into my iTunes library, and have fiddled with the EQ until I got a "heavier" sound on it. I can honestly say that I can listen to Sacred Heart now and appreciate the great songs they are. Ronnie's vocals are amazing as usual. But I'd still like to change those keyboards for sure. |
Curious, what do you think of DREAM EVIL?? The keyboards are VERY prominent throughout that album (more so than Sacred Heart, IMO). |

Yes, I do like Dream Evil. Better than SH.
Keyboards were only one element I didn't like. Otherwise, a good song comes through. |

Sacred Heart is the best album Dio have released by a country mile and then some. _________________ Sick of all of this

| I bought that when I was little, I found it at a garage sale and saw it was the same band as my Holy Diver tape, so I bought it. I really enjoy Sacred Heart and I see it as a lost classic! |

Well I love Sacred Heart. Hungry for Heaven shows off Ronnie's voice in such a classic way. Truly a work of art. I also enjoy King of Rock N Roll, Another Day, Another Lie, title track, and of course Like the Beat of a Heart.
But then again, I love all of Ronnie's work including the under-rated Strange Highways.
The weakest songs in my opinion on Sacred Heart are: Rock N Roll Children (not because of weak lyrics but because of a weak melody) and Shoot Shoot (which has a great melody but weak lyrics). Anyway, my two cents. |

| "Sacred Heart" is my least favorite Dio album. This has less to do with songwriting than of the sound and style of the times. I disliked so much of what metal in general was doing in the 80s (I was a child of 70s metal), and I thought Sacred Heart reflected that softer, cheesier sound that was "in" then. |
Sure, there was a lot cheesy metal in the 80´s but there was also (IMO) the two heaviest and most evil albums ever recorded: Mob Rules and Born Again!! So the trend wasn't all cheese and I don't know of single 70´s album that sounds and feels as mean as Mob Rules! Hey, Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets are sincerely 80´s too so it was starting to get divided back then. Ronnie just had to find his own path..... following none of the trends.
I do agree that Sacred Heart is not one of the greatest but I simply think that the magic Ronnie and Vivian had was dying out and something new was bound to happen. I find Dream Evil much stronger and a move back in the right direction.
Mob Rules was one of my first albums (child of 80's metal ) but I had no idea who was singing. It was just a name on a sleeve. Some time later I bought Last in Line because the cover looked cool. I didn't even know it was the same guy!! _________________ The Magic that we feel is worth a lifetime! |

Plus, who the hell does tracy g think he is changing the solos from the sabbath and rainbow tunes????? NO ONE is and will ever be good enough to alter iommi and blackmore solos. |
Talk about missing the point! In my world it is much more like : "Who the heck do you think you are, if you try to copy Iommi´s solos???"
What Tracy did was actually very respectfull in NOT trying to play something that only one guy can give the right sound anyway. And lead guitar actually should contain improvisation...... it's not like Tony plays the same solo everytime at all. He just kinda sticks to the theme.
The original idea of a solo was to play what you feel during a song..... which was what Tracy did. I think even Tony would respect that more than trying to imitate his stuff! _________________ The Magic that we feel is worth a lifetime! |

I THINK SACRED HEART ROCKS,BUT TO BE HONEST I'VE NEVER
HEARD A DIO SONG I DISLIKE.A FEW YOU MAY NEED TO LISTEN
TO A COUPLE OF TIMES TO APPRECIATE,BUT LISTEN AGAIN YOU'LL
HEAR RONNIE'S MAGIC IN ALL OF HIS SONGS WHETHER IT'S FAST,
SLOW,HARD,SOFT,W/EMOTION OR WITH ANGER.I LISTEN TO DIO
EVERYDAY.SOMETIMES ROTATING OTHER THE SAME CD OVER AND OVER./ THE CD I LISTENED TO THE MOST CONCECUTIVE TIMES
I THINK WAS MASTER OF THE MOON.HOOKED HARD ON THAT ONE.

I prefer the Tracy G "garbage" over Sacred Heart. Actually, I prefer every other DIO album over Sacred Heart.
The title track has a semi-epic quality about it, so it's probably my favorite from the album. Like the Beat of a Heart has that trademark DIO darkness that I like. Just Another Day starts off with a decent Judas Priest-ish guitar riff, but it quickly turns into a pop tune.
Most of the songs on this album sound like "cookie-cutter" rock radio anthems, in my opinion. It just doesnt sound like a metal album to me. Maybe that's why it is not universally loved by METAL fans?
Of course, I mean no offense to Ronnie James Dio. Mere opinions. _________________ "ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA" TOUR DATES: http://www.zappa.com/zpz/tourdates.html
