What surprised me with the poll was the votes Doug did not get....hell...Tracy G is a bloody good guitar player.....but I was always gonna vote for Goldy....only becoz he is now! Cool
...Doug speaks for himself...anyone who knows anything about playing guitar, knows that this guy is a spectacular musician...I just think that there was not enough time with Doug in the band Dio for most fans to become familiar with this great plaYER!

Good point, I think that same thing applys to Rowan...Rowan is maybe the best of them technically but only did 1 album and tour. If you don't think Rowan is a great player listen to that blistering solo in Walk On Water! Twisted Evil I voted Rowan on that poll too.
...I would Love to see Rowan back in Dio...Lutw is definitely one of my favorite albums...does anyone know what he has been doing recently???

Yeah.....he is forming a band with the bassist from the power metal band Altaria and just played on a David Lee Roth tribute album.

"Here's To You" is the only song off those two discs I can even remember. Is

Is Tracy a good guitarist? Yes.

Is Tracy a good Dio guitarist? Probably not.

Personally, I prefer when a guitarist in his position interjects a bit of their personality into material that predates them. In my opinion, Tracy went in directions that were not suitable to the material.

I agree with most here, I like Strange Highways and Angry Machines alot, and his playing on both, but when he tries to play the classics he just CANT. Every time I hear Dont Talk To Strangers off of inferno I just want to cry when I hear him TRY to play it.

I think it is just isn't The sound of Dio, so their work together just never got noticed by the fans as much. Those songs wth another band and singer probably would be more popular

Note: Shamefully, The first Dio album that I actually listen to was Inferno.... Shocked

I for one, happen to think that Tracy is an awesome guitarist. And he was just right for the two studio albums he did with Ronnie. The live album, ehh... not as much. Inferno is still a decent live album, I just think that Tracy's playing doesn't really show when he plays the older songs. But he shines more on the songs that he did with Ronnie on the Strange Highways and Angry Machines albums.

So to sum this all up, I really think that some people didn't vote for Tracy probably because he's just different. He is by no means a bad guitarist or whatever others may call him. Just different. Wink

I think Tracey's playing damn near ruins Inferno. Hiring him and recording those two albums (SH & AM) in that style was a real misstep, imo. LUTW was far better, and what came after Tracey (Magica) was also far better.

Amen to that! I also think Dio's sense of melody was squelched by the bitter guitar tones of Tracy G.

Dont think anyone can fault him as a musician - but I dont thing he was/is a straight enough rock player for DIO. Doug, Rowan and Craig are all more classic rock guitarists and I think that works best for the Dio sound..........So I am not knocking Tracy at all - I like the unusual timing/tone etc he has but for me it just wasnt right for Dio.

He was perfect for Strange Highways.

Coincidentally one of my favorite Dio albums.

I didn't vote in the guitarist poll, because I couldn't make up my mind.

But the title of this poll is missleading. No one "voted 0" for Tracy G. They had to pick a single favorite guitarist-- all "0" means is that everyone had someone they liked at least a tiny bit more.

Any single-vote poll for the single-best anything is going to have things like that happen. The results for "who is your favorite....." can NOT be taken to be a reflection of how well each of the candidates is liked in general.

(For instance: imagine a poll with 20 candidates. Say the first-choices are spread among ten of them, but everyone has another of the candidates as a close second. The "close second" could be argued to be the most popular, but would still have zero votes in the poll).

When looking at statistics, remember what they are and are not saying Cool

If you want to discover the relative popularity of the guitarists (rather than just who people's single favorite is), a different kind of poll is needed.

I think we need to remember when the albums came out, too. BAck in the mid 1990s, grunge was taking over. As a metal fan from the 1980s, I was hard pressed to find ANY good metal coming out from any of my favorite bands. No one seemed to want our music anymore. Again, the metal fan was alone in the music world. I think Tracy G and Dio did the best that could for the struggle that the music world was going through at the time.

I remember starting to listen to Bluegrass music during that time. While not heavy metal, that were at least good musicians playing tolerable music, and they played fast and clean. Bluegrass songs had solos, too. I missed those in the 1990s.

I would have to say that Tracy fit well in his stint with Dio. It was a certain style departure indeed. Heavier and more modern, and I think that interestingly in terms of style it was a good bridge from doing Dehumanizer to Strange Highways.

Olivious probably said it best:

Quote:

Dio is a classic rocker, from this description I get what you're saying. But I also wonder about Dio's musical growth over time. Tracy G might appeal to me as a younger person because I think my generation might be more used to the aggressive stuff. As a musician myself, it has been challenging not to get into creative ruts or be redundant. I could imagine wanting to try out a different style guitar player.

It's also valid if Tracy G could not play the 'classic' tracks in a way that honors the originality of them. He may be adept at his own style, but perhaps he didn't play the classic material that well. I recall loving it in my younger 20s when I saw him live.

There are tracks on Strange Highways that are mind blowing. I esp love the Jesus Mary & the holy ghost opener...Tracy's screeching harmonics are amazing. Evilution is pretty amazing too, for what it is, it is an amazing example of Tracy's style.

I once met Tracy during the Strange Highways tour, and I recall being sort of 'dismissed' when I mentioned that I was also a guitar player. I remember him saying, 'everyone is a guitar player.'

Anyhow, rock on, folks.
