Dougie or Ritchie, Aldrich's works on the evil or divine DVD made me look at him in a lot more of a clearer way.

Tony Iommi. Not especially for his techniques or fast playing, but he is the Master of the Heavy Gloomy Doomy Riffs, those aren't equalled by any guitarist I know about...

Definately Tony Iommi by far. He also worked well with Doug and Rowan. Vivian was great but I lost respect for him when he slammed Dio in an interview. Craig is also a great guitarist and and Ritichie was also great as well.

This thread is ridiculous... what yardstick do you use to measure talent? Without a doubt the most technically proficient players here are Rowan Robertson and Doug Aldrich, but does that really make them better than a master riff-writer like Iommi? Blackmore is a great improviser, Campbell plays with tremendous passion (at least he used to), Goldy has a killer sense of melody, and the two guitarists that recorded with Elf are the masters of the groove. The point is that each of these players has both strengths and weaknesses, and none can be said to be "better" than the other. I've been playing professionally for years, and if you want to have a poll you really ought to be talking about who's the best songwriter... that is far more important. In that case I'd have to say Goldy... he's been a principle songwriter on three of my top five RJD albums. But the fact is that some of you might prefer songs by Vivian Campbell or Tony Iommi, so how can I really say that Goldy is better than they are? It's very subjective.

This poll doesnt take into account that Dio has worked with so many other guitarists. He had a whole slew of them on the hear n aid project. Including Yngwie Malmsteen who could be the best guitarist ever (arguably) Yngwie also recorded The Aerosmith song Dream on with Dio on Vocals. He should be mentioned.
The reason I sa y Yngwie could be the best is because I saw him open for Dio on the Lock up the Wolves tour. and he played with a bluesy style at that time. People said he was incapable of that style of guitar, but he smoked! I saw Steve Via shortly after and he wasnt as good as Yngwie. He is the best in my book he can do it all. _________________ Check out Al Diamond Phillips/Nevermet on the web

I am kind of combining this with another post, but I wish Ronnie had sometimes worked with Ted Nugent. I think Ted doesn't get as much respect as he deserved, and he was the best live guitarist of the late 70's and early 80's. He's still out there and can rock a house. I think they could gel.
