I just reviewed Astral Door's "AStralism" on the 80's forum, and it lacked in several areas for me. The vocals were, odd, he has a perfect singing voice which you can hear on "Apocalypse Revealed" briefly (sounds Dio-ish), but the rest of the album mostly consists of a deep growl-ish vocla work. The drums are swallowed up as well in the mix. If you want to read the entire review, go here:

or just click on my signature, the topic will be near the bottom in the section "Fresh Meat"

My overall grade is: 3.625 out of 5

You just don't understand the genius that is Nils Patrik Johansson.

um, and what are you basing that on?

The fact that I've heard Astralism and know that the singing is top notch throughout it. The genius of Nils Patrik is that in his band the Astral Doors, his voice is another lead instrument, always there, but not always up front like you'd hear in a pop band. It reminds me of Jon Anderson on the 70s Yes albums in that respect.

Swedish metallers ASTRAL DOORS, who feature in their ranks LION'S SHARE vocalist Patrik Johansson, have issued the following update:

"So far we have recorded the vocals to five new songs and my feeling is that this time you will hear a couple of new sides of ASTRAL DOORS. For example, today's song is a heavy-ballad kind of tune named 'Bastard Son'. I promise you, you have never heard Patrik sing with such emotion before, it's breathtaking! On the other hand, we have harder songs than ever before as well. 'Planet Earth' is one example of that — the meanest song we have done this far. But don't worry, it will all fit in the frame of the true ASTRAL sound. So I guess you will hear a more varying ASTRAL DOORS when this, as-yet-untitled record hits stores. When? After the summer of 2007, I guess."

ASTRAL DOORS' third album, "Astralism", was re-released in August 2006 as a digipack, featuring a newly written bonus track, entitled "21st Century Medieval". "The sound on the album has been polished and has been remastered by a profesional," the band previously wrote on its web site. "This is how it was meant to sound from the beginning. Sounds insane but the first version slipped through without our approval. If we've had the last word the first version would never been released, that's for sure."

"Astralism" was originally released in March 2006 via Locomotive Music. The CD is described by the band as "another slab of old-school hard rock with a touch of metal — something you can't help loving."

okay, i see your point. but, your take on it doesn't mean the album itself is great. The drums are barely heard, and his vocals really aren't that good throughout.

lol, eh, not much the guitars on the albuma re pretty good, and bass as well. Vocals are mediocre, but do shine at points escpecially during "Apocalypse Revelaed" when he pulls a Dio pitch briefly, and during "London Caves". I'd say give "Astralism" a listen, you might like it, it's just not a truly over-the-top superb album.

I think you're being arbitrarily overcritical, by dropping that word "mediocre," but I'll just say one final thing about the vocals. There's a thin line between growling and singing and Nils Patrik Johansson crosses it a number of times on his Astral Doors albums. If you've never enjoyed death metal vocals, then you probably won't get it. I think people who shun a whole subgenre of metal just because of a vocal style are no better than the numerous pea-brained masses who shun metal in general because of bad stereotypes, or God knows whatever reason. But that's just my opinion. A guess as to why you might say mediocre to describe something I don't think is mediocre.

As far as my own opinion of the album Astralism, I'd agree that it's very good, but not an over-the-top/superb album, maybe only an 8 out of 10, but the reason I listen to it and love it so much is because I like the vocals so damn much.

When I want to hear Ronnie James Dio, I'll listen to Holy Diver or Magica. When I want to hear good music with a singer that tries to imitate Ronnie, I listen to Headless Cross. But when I want to hear some great metal with a singer who has a voice that reminds me of Ronnie, but who sounds original despite the similarities, I listen to the Astral Doors.

you just basically restated my own thoughts! read the review on the 80s forum before you go all mad rushing to ridicule my thoughts on his vocal work, and i did say he reminds me of Dio sometimes but WHEN he goes deep and distorted he does not, in anyw way, remind me of Dio's voice.

As for "shunning" a genre of metal, the only "shunning" i do is to emo music, the death metal growl unless the music abolutely blows and the vocals are just over-the-top ridiculously retarded, will get play from me.

next time, do your research on what I say before making accusations and then by yourself saying the same thing I've already said!

There's no link in any of your posts where I can find any reviews. I clicked your signature but couldn't figure out how that was supposed to bring me to any reviews.
