Dear Stargazer!
Yes, I have seen Dio in 1984 on his first ever gig in Germany.
Hamburg was the venue and it was pure MAGIC. The place was literally packed and Ronnie took us on a journey to places we've never been before. I really enjoyed Viv Campbell on guitar, he also was simply brilliant. Ronnie had the whole crowd in his hand and the band delivered, from old Rainbow songs over to Black Sabbath to his new album, which took Germany by storm.
As you see, I am around a little bit longer than some of you. And I fell in love with Ronnies voice with Rainbow's Long live Rock 'n' Roll. He is a constant companion for more than 30 years and will always be on my mind.
On other episode: A friend of mine is Vinnie Appice's drumtech - Andre Bargmann. He arranged for 2 friends of mine and me of course a meeting after the Heaven and Hell-gig in 2007 in Offenbach/Germany. I was able to present to Ronnie the ticket from the show in 1984 and his reaction was beyond belief. I simpy wanted to thank him for the wonderful music and the words for he gave to me. But Ronnie took me by surprise: He hugged me, touched my cheek and nearly tore my arm of; thanking me for the faith I had in him for all these 23 years and keeping this ticket.
So, I still get goose-bumps when telling or writing this little story.
But as Andre told me: Ronnie was this kind of guy. Always time for the fans, a chat, a photo, a signature.
What a hell of guy, a brilliant musician. I am so proud having the opportunity to exchange some words with him. _________________ They tell you black is really white

Great story, law! It seems to be the trend when it comes to Ronnie, a very kind and overly gracious guy. Nothing was too much for his fans! _________________ So if a stranger sees you

I'm so jealous of this story - if only I could have met Ronnie! If he touched my cheek I would have fainted.
I can go back a bit further - saw him with Rainbow in 1976. |

Great story! Thank you for sharing that.
I just moved to tears.
I can imagine how glad Ronnie was at that time.
The faith! What a word.
Always loving his music is what Ronnie wants us to do and he is really happy with.
It's so great that you could deliver your love directly to him. _________________ ☆Tell me lies as long as it's not about love☆ |

Thanks for all of your comments.
Somehow I knew, being so close to Ronnie would be the absolute highlight of my life as far as music is concerned.
I drove several weeks later to switzerland - the Montreux Jazz Festival - to get another dose of Heaven & Hell. By the way, this gig was filmed and recorded but to my knowledge it has not been on sale.
In 2009 we watched H & H in Bonn/Germany, home in the evening. Next morning hopping on a plane to Zurich/Switzerland for the next show. Brilliant, as always.
I was to be the last time for me, to see him on stage. We already had tickets for the Dio-Tour at the end of 2009 in the Netherlands and also for the scheduled show of H & H in Bochum/Germany in May 2010. Sadly it was not to be. But I tell you the DIO-Sticker on my car is something that reminds me everyday of the most fabulous singer, that graced the stages the world over; as well as the DIO-mousepad in my office.
