Hi everyone,
I'm new here and this is my first post. Anyway, I wanted to ask about this imminent new release; Dio Live - We Rock. It seems it will be available in the UK and Japan from the 13th but not the US or Europe.
It's left me scratching my head a bit as the details are quite sketchy. I've searched a lot around the web but not found out much more. I checked Plastichead distribution (http://www.plastichead.com/) and they are offering a vinyl version in January from a label called 'backonblack'.
But I could find even less about the CD/DVD version. A Japanese blog I found seems to think that it is a San Jose concert from 83 (audio) and goes on to talk about the two shows already available on DVD as We Rock. But generally, the track listings have me confused.
Sorry this is a bit garbled but I thought it may be of interest and I hope someone might be able to shed more light on it.
I am wondering if it is a somewhat unauthorised cash-in. But one thing I am certain about is that the cover artwork is rubbish!! But on a positive, any early live Dio performances are fine with me! |

I just found out about this and would VERY much like to know what the details are. Is this a re-release of the "We Rock" dvd with an audio cd of the shows?
The "We Rock" dvd released in 2005 consists of "Live in Concert" and "A Special From The Spectrum". Wikipedia lists those shows as being from December 4, 1983, and August 25, 1984. The original vhs or laserdisc versions of those shows have a couple extra songs by the way, I have boots of those.
Those were great shows, and certainly deserve to be released on CD. In a heartbeat I would re-buy the "We Rock" dvd to be able to get official versions of those two shows on CD.
Anyone know anything about this "Dio Live - We Rock [Cd + DVD]" Please let us know. Things don't match up here though with the 2005 "We Rock" dvd, and it seems like this is something else. The first disc (listed below) does come close though. But there are a few extra songs though that do not appear even on my boot of the 83 show.
And my guess as this is not listed yet as a US release, that the dvd will not be NTSC but will be PAL. But I already have the NTSC dvd of "We Rock", so if this is about getting my hands on a live CD of those two shows or something, I'm still all for it.
And I don't care about the artwork either way, it is certainly not great, but it could be worse. It is different, I'll give it that. Kinda comic book looking or something. Whatever. But it does kinda feel like a quicky job.

There is a track listing at the Amazon UK, but I'm not sure how accurate it is. They list this as a two disc set. But it also says "[Cd + DVD]". I'm not sure if they mean that disc 1 is the cd and disc 2 is the dvd (that is my guess) or something else. The track listing at which can be found currently at the Amazon UK link above, is listed as follows:
Disc: 1
1. Stand Up and Shout
2. Straight Through The Heart
3. Shame on The Night
4. Children of the Sea
5. Holy Diver
6. Stargazer
7. Heaven and Hell
8. Rainbow in the Dark
9. Man on The Silver Mountain
10. Don t Talk to Strangers
11. One Night in The City
12. We Rock
Disc: 2
1. Rock N Roll Children
2. Long Live Rock N Roll
3. Rock N Roll Children (cont)
4. Man on the Silver Mountain
5. Heaven and Hell
6. Stand Up and Shout
7. Holy Diver
8. Gypsy
9. Caught In the Middle
10. Don t Talk to Strangers
11. Straight Through The Heart
12. Invisible
13. Rainbow in The Dark
14. Shame on the Night
15. Guitar Solo / Jam
16. Shame on The Night (cont)
17. Holy Diver (cont)
18. Sign of The Southern Cross
19. Dream Evil
20. Jesus, Mary & The Holy Ghost
21. Last In Line
22. Gates of Babylon
23. The Mob Rules
I also find the following about it. The following link is talking about the lp version of this release and they say that it is a "COLLECTION OF LIVE VERSIONS OF THE SONGS THAT PUT DIO ON THE METAL MAP, RANGING FROM THE MESMERIZING RAINBOW GEM STARGAZER TO THE FINAL ANTHEMIC WE ROCK"
http://metalnewspowerofmetaldk.blogspot.com/2010/11/dio-live-we-rock.html
In other words, I didn't get really any further than the first poster. But it smells kinda cash in to me. But maybe not. Who knows. Anyone??? |

I have this release, and I have tried to source where the recordings are from:
Disc 1:
01 Stand Up And Shout
02 Straight Through The Heart
03 Shame On The Night
04 Children Of The Sea
05 Holy Diver
06 Stargazer
07 Heaven And Hell
08 Rainbow In The Dark
09 Man On The Silver Mountain
10 Don't Talk To Strangers
11 One Night In The City
12 We Rock
The sleeve notes list the following:
1-9: Civic Auditorium, San Jose, California, 5 October 1983
10-12: Spectrum, Philadelphia, 25 August 1984
The 1983 show is from an FM broadcast. I have a bootleg of this show, and it is almost exactly the same except the guitar solo and drum solo have been edited out. The 1984 show is the same concert as “A Special From The Spectrum” VHS. Interestingly, “One Night In The City” was never officially released on video. A soundboard recording of the whole show exists in bootleg form, which I have.
The DVD track listing is as follows (note: these are the 29 chapters on the disc):
Disc 2:
01 Interlude #1
02 Rock 'N' Roll Children
03 Long Live Rock 'N' Roll
04 Rock 'N' Roll Children (Cont.)
05 Interlude #2
06 Man On The Silver Mountain
07 Heaven And Hell
08 Heaven And Hell (Cont.)
09 Interlude #3
10 Stand Up And Shout
10 Holy Diver
11 Gypsy
12 Drum Solo
13 Caught In The Middle
14 Don't Talk To Strangers
15 Straight Through The Heart
16 Invisible
17 Rainbow In The Dark
18 Shame On The Night
19 Guitar Solo/Jam
20 Shame On The Night (Cont.)
21 Holy Diver (Cont.)
22 The Sign Of The Southern Cross
23 Dream Evil
24 Jesus, Mary And The Holy Ghost
25 Jesus, Mary And The Holy Ghost (Cont.)
26 The Last In Line
27 Interlude #4
28 Gates Of Babylon
29 The Mob Rules
The DVD footage is half bootleg camcorder footage and TV footage, etc. The DVD footage is poor quality, and it looks like most of it has been ripped from YouTube. I'm almost certain of it, as I have found exactly the same footage on there. The “Interludes” are short interview clips. There are no dates or sources given in the sleeve notes, but some of the videos contain dates and text which reveals where the footage is from. If this information is accurate, then the sources are as follows:
1-4, 23: Monsters of Rock, Italy, 26 August 1987.
5, 6, 27, 28: Zepp, Tokyo, 29 May 2005.
9-22: Tel Aviv, 29 October 2005
7, 8, 24-26, 29: footage featuring James Kottak on drums, I couldn't determine the exact date of this show, but Tapio's site www.dio.net informs me that Kottak filled in for Appice on drums for 5 dates during 1997. The dates are as follows:
Coach House, San Juan Capistrano, CA, 6 February 1997
Billboard Live, West Hollywood, CA, 7 February 1997
Brick By Brick, San Diego, CA, 8 February 1997
The Edge, Palo Alto, CA, 10 February 1997
Trocadero, San Francisco, CA, 11 February 1997
It must be one of these dates. I have seen footage on YouTube of the Palo Alto show, and it is not from that show.
Anyway, that's all I could determine. Hope this helps! |
