Tomorrow will be the one year anniversary of the only time I got to hear Black Sabbath (er. H&H...) play live.
Tony, Geezer, and Vinnie had an extended jam session in the middle of Heaven and Hell when Ronnie stormed off the stage for six or seven minutes (someone had started tossing a beach-ball around the audience, and it seriously annoyed him). The guys were very nonchalant about it. And Geezer got an extra solo in at one part during the jam, which I enjoyed hearing.
There was much cheering when Ronnie came back on, which he directed to each others in turn before continuing with the song.
For some reason, it was their performances of two of the newer songs that most blew me away that night-- Follow the Tears and Bible Black.
But one thing that really sticks in my mind is Ronnie, before the final encore (Neon Knights) saying something to the effect of "this is the last song we're going to play for you, so this is the one we want you to remember us by". I may not be remembering his exact words correctly (they didn't have the sense of portentousness at the time that they do in hindsight), but I think of that now every time I hear Neon Knights. Yes, Ronnie, I will. I definitely will.
So glad I got to see that show; all the guys put on fantastic performances, and I feel truly blessed to have seen Ronnie perform that night. |
