Given Ronnie's interests in history and folklore, I would find it hard to believe that he was unaware of the unseelie "redcaps" of faerie lore when he chose the name Red Caps.
(most Metal doo-wop name ever!) |
Its hard to say whether he had that knowledge at that time, since he was very young, it could have meant something as simple as they wore Red Caps. We all know what he developed into, but again whether he was always into history and folklore and would have used a reference like that at that time (Pre-Metal) Is debatable _________________ Check out Al Diamond Phillips/Nevermet on the web

| During all the Ronnie memorials we learnt that Ronnie allways held the contact to his earliest friends.Someone even posted a series of pictures from his 67th birthday party.I really wish some of those folks would join here and tell us more stories about joung Ronnie. |

Fair enough. No way of knowing if the band was actually named after the Faeries. |

That would be very cool, if any of them wanted to do that. |

Perhaps a sports fan can help me with this....but isn't "red hat" a sports term? That could maybe be where Red Caps came from?
Just guessing! |

nah.....I'll stick with LindaJeanne's theory.......I can imagine Ronnie knowing full well the meaning but not telling anyone - he was a master at doing that and I can picture the glint in his eye now as we are all discussing it!! _________________ Stand up and Shout!!!!! |

The cover of the self-titled "Elf" album would indicate that by that time, at least, he had a knowledge of and interest in traditional faerie lore. That's no redcap on the cover, certainly-- but he's definitely portraying a traditional elf, not a Disenified/Shakespearean/modern one.
That doesn't prove anything about a dozen years earlier, of course. .
Though I do suspect that Olivious suggests, it may have been his own private joke. Or a sort of in-joke to see who "got" it. I have heard him say in an interview that part of what attracted him to Rock music as a teen was because it was "forbidden" and therefore "dangerous". So secretly naming the band after a sort of goblin would seem to fit.
(Something more "demonic"-seeming would have been highly unlikely that early, I think. The 50's and 60's were way too early for Murray or any of his cousins. But faeries & goblins? Why not? It also fits with the "don't be quick to judge based on outside appearances" theme that he mentions frequently in interviews.)
But who can say? We'll probably never know the truth. (But yes, there's probably a "glint in is eye" at our discussion, whether we're anywhere close to the answer or not ) |
