Holy CRAP. Never heard of Thunder before, they evidently didn't get much exposure Stateside... I have no idea why, what a phenomenal talent pool..The live stuff MELTS their studio work...

Whitesnake takes a comfortable second for me at this point...

Thanks for the education,HM....

I remember them, but they really didnt get much exposure here. So Whitesnake would beat them out in that catagory. I dont know a whole lot about them, but I do know that David Coverdale was able to mount line up after line up with some of the finest musicians in the Hard Rock, and he's back again with another great line up, so I just have to stick with the band I have had the pleasure of seeing five times back when they filled arenas

Whitesnake gets my vote

Thunder are a class act...and Danny Bowes even today still has a great voice.
If you only buy one Thunder cd...make sure its Backstreet Symphony this was written by one of our members.

Formed in 1989 from the ashes of pop-rock combo Terraplane, guitarist and songwriter Luke Morley and singer Danny Bowes had decided to go in a more traditional 'rock' direction than the pop path they were (reluctantly) being led down by their previous record label. Retaining drummer Harry James from the Terraplane days, bassist Mark 'Snake' Luckhurst and guitarist/keyboard player Ben Matthews were recruited and the new band entered the studio with Duran Duran's guitarist Andy Taylor producing.
What emerged was a latter day rock classic; you knew from the first listen that these songs would stand the test of time. Highlights of this terrific album are the slowburner "Don't Wait For Me"; a showcase for Danny Bowes' awesome voice, "Higher Ground", "Love Walked In", and the title track. The material drew heavily on the influences of giants such as Bad Company and the Who (to name but two), the twin guitar attack of Luke Morley and Ben Matthews allied with the rock solid rhythms of Snake and Harry were an irresistible combination. When you throw into the mix the amazingly talented Danny Bowes, a singer good enough to rank alongside the likes of Coverdale and Rodgers in my view, the whole package could not possibly fail.

And fail they did not, after having toured the UK to little response they landed a support slot with Aerosmith, which brought them to wider attention, then in 1990 they opened the Donington Monsters of Rock festival, they went down an absolute storm and it was all systems go from there.

What none of us knew was that a total sea-change was coming to the whole rock scene just a year later, coming out of Seattle the grunge wave spearheaded by Nirvana changed the landscape - not necessarily for the better in my view, but the effect was to cut the ground from underneath everything that had come before, good or bad and alas Thunder were a big casualty of this change. They survived to make more albums and tour for the next decade only because of the strength of their live show won them enough of a loyal fan base (at least in Europe and also Japan, where British bands have long been well received), to make it worthwhile.

The band did take a hiatus in 2000, during which time songwriter Luke Morley released a solo album then a follow up with Danny Bowes, in a more soulful direction than Thunder had taken. They were tempted back into action in 2002 by a prominent slot on the touring Monsters of Rock arena shows, after which they decided to give it another go. Although they went on to make several albums after this classic, all of which are worth having, the amount of songs from this album still played by the band today demonstrates the enduring quality of the material here.

For any fan of blues based rock'n'roll this album is essential - as a debut from a rock band it stands comparison with the first Bad Company album, the first Van Halen album, the debut from Montrose, Dio's "Holy Diver" and G'n'R's "Appetite for Destruction".

I recommend this album, particularly at it's now bargain price, without hesitation.

If you want...I can send you a few tracks via email.
Let me know.
Maybe I should have made the poll Thunder v Def Leppard....becoz they are 10 times better than Leppard but it was you guys in North America that are to blame for that Laughing

Off topic Embarassed but what the hell there is another UK band should you check out Little Angels its is rumoured that the vocalist Jepson was approached by Van Halen to replace Sammy Hagar in 1996 Shocked
Little Angels - 'Kickin' Up Dust'
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=YbD_BurVYrM
Little Angels - 'She's A Little Angel'
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=uZxiTZQT028
Little Angels - Do You Wanna Riot
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=FXLkhCRul18
Little Angels - Radical Your Lover
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=qDd-J0Rg1yA

Not sure about Jepson if he would have been any good in Van Halen...but who knows it could have worked.

Can't really get into Little Angel.... A little too Jovi~ish for me. I could definitely see the Van Halen thing, he sounds a lot like Gary Cherone.

I will be looking for Thunder discs soon, and will keep you informed of my progress ( I must be one of the few that still enjoys going to get new music )..

Al.. Coverdale changes band members faster than a runway model can change underwear. His biggest mistake was firing Sykes, and his second biggest mistake was hiring Vai......

I still get a kick out of new music and bands I have never heard before.I think its important to be open minded about all kinds of metal. It was easy when I was younger...I just wanted to listen to stuff I knew my parents would hate Laughing
I got agree with you Coverdale getting rid of Moody, Marsden and Sykes huge mistakes... Crying or Very sad But I am die hard Classic Whitesnake fan.I was also a fan of Vandenberg, I was pretty excited about Adrian joining Whitesnake but the songs did not work for me Crying or Very sad
I also think Coverdale's voice was at his finest back in those days.Lets not talk about Vai please Laughing Laughing
I think with Whitesnake it always gonna be about what era you prefer the most.

Couldn't agree with you more about Vandy, in fact would have loved to have seen him and Sykes share the stage. Would also have been nice if Adrian toughed it out long enough to tour with Aldrich.

You are absolutely correct, Slip Of The Lip was one of the worst Whitesnake efforts yet, but it is truly a shame that being in the band didn't give Adrian the platform it should have to enhance his solo career....

I try to listen to a lot of music from decades before I was born, while trying to keep up with a lot of new releases. It's pretty easy to overlook some bands, I guess Laughing. Especially late 80'ies and early 90'ies hard rock is like finding the needle in the hay, because there is a lot of bad and mediocre or extremely cheesy stuff out there.
Thunder sounds pretty sweet from those videos. Any specific albums you'd recommend?

Thunder were/are an awsome band live.......seen them a couple of times and both shows have been awsome.......BUT Whitesnake (early years) were a major force.....Coverdale in his prime was a great vocalist........their later stuff is juat a bit too cliche for me.....BUT I would have to choose Whitesnake in a head to head.

Having said that I have all the Thunder albums and enjoy revisting them from time to time!

Agree with you on Danny......amazing voice which he never seems to struggle to hit the notes where as Mr Coverdale these days (pre his vocal problems) was certainly struggling.

Dont know why Thunder were not bigger.........they were/are a great band!
