Definitely The Devil You Know.

Dehumanizer has a few good songs on it, but it's my least favorite of the four that they did. (though I can't put my finger on why, exactly.)

This is a difficult choice. Obviously, both albums are excellent. I only recently purchased a copy of Dehumanizer, and I have been listening to it for about 3 weeks now. It astounds me how good it is. In fact, it is much, much better than I had expected. (And that says a lot, because I have come to hold very high expectations for RJD and his bandmates.)

I enjoy TDYK, but it took me a while to get in to it. I think it is heavier and darker than I had expected, despite being a more mature-sounding album. On the other hand, I was thinking I might not like Dehumanizer too much, because it didn't seem to be received too well by the audience back then. So I was surprised when I found out I love it.

So, there's my vote: Dehumanizer beats TDYK, but not by much. In fact, as I sit here typing this, I'm thinking maybe I can't decide at all...

Nice to be a fan of a band that does everything so well.

I've listened to both albums several times lately, and I give the nod to TDYK.(I own neither one yet--don't clobber me lol.) It seems your expectations going in elevated Dehumanizer just a bit, which is understandable given its initial reception.

There are 3 reasons I tip my hat to The Devil You Know: 1. Better production. 2. Fiercer performances 3. Lyrics connected with me more. Anyone notice the opening riff in Master of Insanity borrows heavily from a Zeppelin tune? Anyway, the band sounds more unified on Devil ...something is missing on this one. Maybe Dio's imprint is not as deep here as usual? Could it be why he left again? Like someone else wrote, I can't put my finger on it but it's lacking something.

Anyway, I voted for The Devil You Know Smile

OpaqueOne, it could be that my expectations factored in to my decision a bit. It's hard to say. I will add to my original post that the lyrics in Dehumanizer seem more pertinent to me than do the lyrics of TDYK.

Again, TDYK is, I think, a more mature-sounding album with arguably better production. I can find no fault with it. It is powerful, heavy, dark; and yet somehow the songs have some light and hope in them...especially Tony's solo on Rock and Roll Angel (I can't get over how good that is). And I'd even go so far as to say Ronnie's voice is even better on TDYK.

Still, I have to stand by my decision to vote for Dehumanizer, the main reason being that I like that raw sound and the lyrics. I prefer to listen to it over TDYK, but I love both albums. This question, to me, is like someone asking me which color Corvette I want. Both are still Corvettes, I'm just picking Dehumanizer as my favorite color.

Dehumanizer is everything heavy metal should be.

Dark, heavy, angry, abrasive, and the overall sound is cold and metallic. The drumming is so solid and Ronnie's at the top of his game vocally.

The fact that this album came out and stood up well in the time of bands like Soundgarden and Alice In Chains is a testament to its universal strength as a great metal album.
