We all know Ronnie James Dio had 3 songs written before Campbell joined DIO.
"Stand Up And Shout", "Don't Talk To Strangers" and "Holy Diver"
And we all know the story about Bain having 2 tapes of guitarists for Ronnie to listen to....Campbell and John Sykes.
Now lets compare both guitarists.
What if Ronnie James Dio had picked John Sykes instead of Campbell
Mouth-watering prospects
I am a fan of John Sykes, I got hooked on his playing when I heard him playing on 2 tracks on the Tygers of Pan Tang album The Cage, then he joined Thin Lizzy and turned them into a Heavy Metal band with his heavy sound and tone, I was lucky to see him play with Thin Lizzy and his playing just blew me away. Then just as I warming to the idea of Mel Galley in Whitesnake after Bernie Marsden, Whitesnake make huge changes and John Sykes joins the band Whitesnake with John Sykes go Platinum about 14 times!!!
What if it had been John Sykes on Holy Diver?

Nice question, and an interesting one. I've always liked Sykes. Great tone and a wonderful guitarist. Check out Lizzy's 'Cold Sweat'
However I always felt Viv had a bit more melody in his playing.
Mind you Sykes playing the riff to Don't talk...would have been pretty awsome
Imagine them both playing with Dio!!!!
Was Jake E Lee asked to play?

Mr Sykes would have been perfect for Dio - and I think would have been a very loyal musician in the band. i love everything he did with Whitesnake, Lizzy et al.
His tone is just so heavy and I think that he, Jimmy Bain and Vinnie Appice would have made a formidable sound between them.
Shame it never happened really, not that I am complaining about Viv and what he gave to the band......I just think John would have added an extra something. _________________ Stand up and Shout!!!!! |

I am not complaining either but Sykes would have made Holy Diver maybe a little more heavier if his playing on the ''Thunder and Lightning" is anything to go by.
The track ''Cold Sweat'' is amazing..100% Heavy Metal!
They say there is recordings of Jake E. Lee and DIO.
Lee never got passed the rehearsal stage. |

What about if Jake E. Lee got the gig?? He was first in line til Ronnie was introduced to Viv.... I would think there would have been some collaberation, as well.... _________________ http://ladyrock.informe.com/ |

I only heard him play on Bark at the Moon & The Ultimate Sin, so I don't really know much about him. This sounds terrible but I have not dusted down those cds for years |

I'll chime in by saying that you never know how that could have changed things.
The album would have been different.
It could have been a major success as well b/c of all that led up to that point in Ronnie's career. It seems that Ronnie as the centerpiece was in an era of major artistic proliferation. Perhaps a whole handful of guitarists could have still made a successful run as the axeman on Holy Diver.
I was shocked to hear nasty things said by Ronnie about Campell. Regardless, look at the amazing album they made. Excuse me, I'd much rather have Holy Diver on my resume than Def Leppard ANYTHING post Steve Clark passing away.
It would be so fun if we could sample all these 'band' variations. Maybe we can have some computer run a programmed model to find out. You know, kind of like they run computer models to see what a hurricane will do?????? lol |
