Did Nickel hijack this Sab song and changed the lyrics? How close do you think it is to a copyright infringement? I know both songs are in the same key.

About infringement:
You seldom hear of lawsuits anymore, because many times the "borrowing" is done intentional now. Especially if it all takes place within the same recording company. What happens is one faction gets a percent for the borrowing which =$, the other faction gets a hit song =$. And the recording company laughs all the way to the bank with a double some times triple whammy. A song that top the charts decades ago which made the record company $, now is recycled back on the charts. btw Nine Inch Snails have done Supernaut aswell.

Nick I have moved this into the right section....this song has nothing to do with Ronnie James Dio.

On 4 December 2008, American guitarist Joe Satriani filed a copyright infringement suit against Coldplay in Los Angeles. The suit claims that "Viva la Vida" incorporates "substantial, original portions" of his instrumental track "If I Could Fly" from his 2004 album Is There Love in Space?. The band has denied the allegation, saying the similarities were "entirely coincidental"

Thats the get out jail free card...."entirely coincidental"

I don't think that they are similar. I don't know if they have "borrowed" the sound but with so many millions songs you will always find something that sound very similar

NME.com reports that guitarist Joe Satriani's lawsuit against COLDPLAY, based on his accusation that Chris Marin and co plagiarized his 2004 song "If I Could Fly" for their 2008 single "Viva La Vida", has been dismissed from court.
Satriani sued the band last December, seeking a jury trial to award him monetary compensation.
Now, according to News.justia.com, the case was dismissed yesterday (September 14) in California Central District Court "upon stipulation," suggesting that an out-of-court settlement may have been reached.
Judge Dean Pregerson decreed that both the parties bear their own trial costs as the case was closed.

I hear the similar part of these two songs, however, I can't begin to agree that they are so similar that it warrants a law suit.

The songs are different enough to be in their entirety very much not the same song.

So what if one vocal line sounds like Joe's song? It's not enough similarity to warrant a greedy money grab.

I'd rather Joe flex his boring artistic muscles and record a boring Joe Satriani song to deal with his overwhelming greed.

Just from listening to the songs, If I were the standing judge I'd dismiss it in two seconds.

There are in fact 20 SECONDS in Joe's 6.5 minute song that resemble the WHOLE song by Coldplay.

SONGS are copyrighted. Not riffs, not portions or solo licks. Joe's song is mostly totally different with the exception of about 20 seconds around the first minute. Coldplay has built a song out of that 'similarity,' but it is not copying a song.

I'm not a fan of litigious people. It turns me off bigtime, and I'm not saying there aren't valid reasons to sue. It's just that Joe's is not one of them.

Wah, they have a part that sounds like me!!! Wah!

LET THEN EVERYONE WITH A SIMILAR SONG OUR SOUND SUE EACH OTHER! JUST SUE AND FORGET ABOUT ART!
