Definitely Man of the SM, but that was before I had any idea who Ronnie was - it was just a song on the radio that didn't get played all that much.
Later I heard Kill the King off the live Rainbow record and it just blew me away. _________________ Bass guitarists hold it all together. |

It's hard to say, because my parents listen to Dio since I was born, but the 2 songs which took my breath away were Die Young and Stargazer!!!!!! _________________ "Whenever you dream you're holding the key it opens the door to let you be free" |

I grew up listening to stuff like Michael Jackson, Earth Wind/Fire, Smokey Robinson,Rick James and alot of top 40 stuff.
But it wasnt until I had moved out of state, into a more boxed culture (UTah), ya.......lol...... This was the time of puberty , agression , girls ....rebellion .....mary jane and rock and roll .
While at a friends house, probably ditching school.....came on a video of Rainbow of the Dark. The song immediately caught my attention. The synths were etched in my brain and this guys voice grabbed me by the balls......lol......I instantly related to what the song was about and here 25 years later, I can travel back, ....simply by pushing play. |

| The first time I heard Ronnie sing was actually during the song "Kickapoo" from Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny. But that doesn't really count. My first official Dio song was "Holy Diver". Classic! |

that puts us discovering Dio around the same time and close to the same age, Rainbow in the Dark is probably the first song I heard as well, since it was a big radio hit at the time. _________________ Check out Al Diamond Phillips/Nevermet on the web

.. in 1983 (I was 12) my older brother (aka coolest guy i knew- 9 years older, played electric guitar, got me into Rush, Judas Priest, Ozzy, Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, Aerosmith, AC/DC, and the rest- and took me to my first metal concert the next year- Iron Maiden: Powerslave!) tossed me an LP of Holy Diver and said "You'll like this". He probably figured I would because I was into fantasy novels, was playing D&D, etc.
He was right. I fucking loved it. First song, first side- "Stand Up and Shout!" I listened to the whol disc in order, and then again for years- but my favourite song on that album was actually "Invisible". For the rest of my life I was hunting down older Dio projects (those first 3 Rainbow albums are great, and the Sabbath ones are classics), while buying his new releases every time they came out. Sometimes I wish musical tastes could smarten the hell up again in a big way- can you imagine what a monster hit Magica or Dehumanizer would have been if they'd been released in the 80s? |

I couldn't agree more! This is exactly how I feel, too. It's almost worse, really, being an American fan of Dio--his style just isn't as popular here as it used to be (or as it should be). There's just so much more interest in it from the European and old eastern bloc countries and the rest of the world. America's just embraced other things like pop and country; and lots of people here who are in to "metal" don't know what good metal actually is. Oh, well. The truth remains that Dio will never lose his fans, here or anywhere. At least we all know where the great music really is!
And I shouldn't complain; I've had the opportunity to see Heaven & Hell twice in recent years. What an honor! |

| I put on my dads vinyl Rainbow Rising and heard the Tarot Woman-intro and later Ronnie's voice, that was it. Was hooked right there. |

Children of the Sea, my dad kept playing it when I was younger. I loved the intro and his vocals. It's still one of my favourites. _________________ Gather the wind, though the wind wont help you fly at all, Your backs to the wall. |
