I got the LP Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow Radio Special, Polydor SA-013, USA, 1975, It includes mostly all the songs from RB's Rainbow, plus Blackmore and Dio talking about various things. For instance, Dio says his greatest influence is the Beatles, and he also says what the song Catch the Rainbow is about - a stable boy and a noble lady. I ripped to mp3, and made it available in the Deep Purple Hub (this is an interview, not a bootleg or official material, so as far as I underdstand the rules it's OK to give the link here).

The interview on a whole is very interesting, it is very early stages of Rainbow, still in the time of the original Elf musicians.

Hey, talk about Catch the Rainbow is so interesting.
I couldn't imagine this hero is a stable boy. Shocked I thought this story is like a fantasy, but I wanted to know what kind of motif is behind.
There's no link here to Deep Purple Hub.
Can you please show URL ?
I really love to listen. Very Happy

If that is the same interview I heard before they talk about Man on the Silver Mountain for one.

But yes Catch the Rainbow is about the last night for these two. It is a romance between the stable boy and a lady basically in waiting. A love that cannot be due to their station in life and this is their last night where she meets him in the stable ( ... a bed of straw against the lace ...). He wishes the night would never end (oh bless me come the dawn).

guess that explains why he's on a bed of straw since he's a stable boy...actually now that i know it all fits perfectly!

When evening falls,
She’ll run to me.
Like whispered dreams,
Your eyes transcieve.
Soft and warm,
She’ll touch my face.
A bed of straw
Against the lace.
We believed
We’d catch the rainbow -
Ride the wind
To the sun.
Sail away
On ships of wonder.
But life’s not a wheel
With chains made of steel,
So bless me!
Come the dawn!
Come the dawn!
Come the dawn!
Come the dawn!

We believed
We’d catch the rainbow -
Ride the wind
To the sun.
And sail away
On ships of wonder.
But life’s not a wheel
With chains made of steel,
So bless me!
Oh, bless me!
Bless me!
Come the dawn!
Come the dawn!
Come the dawn!
Come the dawn!

Devin: Looks different now doesn't it? And someone took the time to do a live version of the lyrics:

When evening falls
She'll run to me
Like whispered dreams
Your eyes can't see, ooh
Soft and warm
She'll touch my face
A bed of straw
Against the lace, ooh
We believed we'd catch the rainbow
Ride the wind to the sun
Sail away on ships of wonder
But life's not a wheel
With chains made of steel
So bless me
Come the dawn
Come the dawn
Come the dawn
Come the dawn
We believed we'd catch the rainbow
Ride the wind to the sun
Sail away on ships of wonder
But life's not a wheel
With chains made of steel
So bless me, oh bless me yeah, bless me
Come the dawn
Come the dawn
Come the dawn
Come the dawn
Ooh, ooh..
Mmm, mmm
Ooh, ooh
A light is all that see
Off to you and me
Ooh, ooh
Ride the night
See the light
Ooh
Take him to the sky, yeah
Ooh, oh
Oo-oo-ooh, ooh
Through the door
Ride the sky
Make it shine
For you and I
See the light
Through the night
Make it shine
To the night
Catch the rainbow, see the light
Catch the rainbow
And ride the sky
Make it shine, shine, shine, shine, shine, shine!
Shine! Shine, for you and I

This is actually one of the goofiest things I ever talked to Ronnie about...and I have said a lot of silly stuff to him Shocked

I told him that I always sang the song when I was cleaning the birthing stall for my horse who was going to have her foal soon. I told him that when I would lay out the fresh bed of straw, I would always think how uncomfortable it would have been to lie down on it wearing only lace...pretty pokey Laughing

He laughed and said, "so you think about me as you are cleaning up horse shit?" We then discussed how beds were probably made of straw back then, so maybe it was a mattress stuffed with straw...I think he was just fucking with me at this point...not seriously discussing the song.

Every time I layed out that bed of straw I thought about telling him that...I am so glad I got to Very Happy

Mattresses have been stuffed with straw but I doubt a stable boy could had afforded a mattress.

If the song does relate to a story about a stable boy and a noble lady, why does the line " a bed of straw" evoke thoughts of a matress as we know it??

If the "noble lady" was visiting the stable boy, then the "bed of straw" would be a very good descriptor for a barn or hay loft, or indeed a horse's stable.

Cool

Well from what I remember, he did say that he didn't mean it litterally...When I said how uncomfortable that would have been, he said something like, "I didn't mean actually on the straw, maybe a mattress made of straw". We were joking around about the shoveling of horse shit and not being serious...maybe it was the wine Rolling Eyes

I doubt he meant a Sealy Posture Pedic stuffed with straw...

Yes, exactly. We have to remember we have our own bias of modern and not of before the luxury of mattresses.

We have to remember that the definition of bed is older than it simply meaning a piece of furniture but a place one sleeps or simply lies.

We as well have a bed of flowers, a river bed, etc.

The commoner often slept above their animals and straw was common. They would had matted the straw and made a bed out of it.
