Dio with Rainbow represents the most talented and artistic melodic rock 'n' roll ever to exist. The combination of Dio and Rainbow beats the hell out of bands like Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Nazareth, Pink Floyd, Cream etc.

Listen to songs like Man On The Silver Mountain, Catch The Rainbow, Snake Charmer, Temple Of The King, 16th Century Greensleeves, Still I'm Sad, Tarot Woman, Run With The Wolf, Starstruck, Stargazer, Long Live Rock 'n' Roll, Kill The King, L.A. Connection, The Shed (Subtle), Sensitive To Light and the absolute masterpiece brought to live performance first time since July 2004 - Gates Of Babylon...and you know why!!!

Dio with Black Sabbath represents the most massive and titanic heavy metal ever to exist. Only - and only - The Metal Gods Judas Priest can match the combined forces of Appice - Dio - Butler - Iommi, Dio with Black Sabbath is HEAVY METAL with huge capital letters! The three albums are solid pieces of evidence in this case. Especially the almighty mammoth Dehumanizer is an absolute and unchallenged HEAVY METAL album! Even Judas Priest in all their metallic divinity would be forced to stand in solemn attention before the power of Dio and Black Sabbath. Only the thunderous Painkiller album can be lined on the same level with the gargantuan Dehumanizer! Dio with Black Sabbath and Judas Priest are the ultimate heavy metal entities of the history of mankind.

The majestic core of heavy metal is like a thunderstorm. Dio with Black Sabbath is the rumble of the thunderstorm, Judas Priest is the bolt of lightning and Dio is the Voice of the Thundergod. After these titans have done their ferocious devastation, Rainbow is a sweet relief to watch and listen to...

In whatever band or with whomever Dio collaborates, the result is always the best possible.

Sabbath without a doubt.

Ronnie with Rainbow was excellent in parts. Blackmore's songwriting was (and always has been) inconsistent and that is where Rainbow falls down IMHO.

Forget Live Evil - Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules are the Metal albums of the decade. Just listen to the riffing on Neon Knights and Sign of the Southern Cross, to name just 2 tracks.

Ronnie's singing is also better with Sabbath.

Tough one. In a strict album compasrison, I edge toward Sabbs because H & H and MR are such fantastic, fantastic recordings. For me, I'm not into some of the bluesier 70's-style songs that appeared on the Rainbow albums.

However to compare the two based on strictly the songs is much more difficult. Rainbow songs like Stargazer, Gates of Babylon, Lady of the Lake, Kill the King, Man on the Silver Mountain -- tremendous stuff.

Good question.

Agreed! I never particularly cared for Rainbow as much as I do for Sabbath with Dio. Incredible, and by far, the best post Ozzy albums.

I beg to differ Deep Purple are as good if not even better than Rainbow.
Ian Gillan & David Coverdale both are very talented singers.
Not to metion Paice on Drums.
& Jon Lord on Keybords

Sabbath, HANDS DOWN. not a very tough choice because:

1) Iommi is better then Blackmore
2) Stuff with Sabbath is heavier then the stuff with Rainbow (excluding songs like walk away though)
3) Music in general is just better (come on Neon Knights vs. Tarot Woman, for instance, Knights win easily)

I know i'll probably get a lot of flack from the Rainbow fanatics, but that's what i think.

i dissagry with all you say, but man ritchie is very better player than iommi....listen as an example the solo of gates of babylon or a light in the black, iommi could never play something like this....

and i think that tarrot woman is few better than neon knights....neon nights is a common very good heavy metal song which became fantastic with the power vocals of ronnie...but tarrot woman is an epic masterpiece the solo guitar, the keybords drums all they are perfect, and of course the epic voice of the best singer of all time...

tarrot woman is a masterpiece like stargazer or gates of babylon, which only the combination of ronnie-ritchie have been written in history of rock music...and of course with the help of master cozy powell RIP....

Rainbow with Dio are near HM , listen Sixteen..., Kill the king, ....
Rainbow with Turner are near AOR. However in my opinion RB'R, Rising, LLrnr, HaH, MR are all top records the best of Hard and Heavy in the world. Dehumanizer a few less, but good.

Hey Burn, we catch almost everywere (not the Rainbow! Laughing).
However in this period I prefer Black Sabbath with Dio to Rainbow with Dio also if they are two awesome bands. Surely two of my favourite bands ever!
As you said in your post, Rainbow with Dio are Hard Rock sometimes really close to H/M (I'm thinking at songs like "16th Century...", "Kill The King", "Tarot Woman" and, why not, "Do You Close Your Eyes"!), while Rainbow with Turner are really close to AOR. You know, I like AOR, so I love that Rainbow-era but I prefer the Dio-era, of course.
Hope to catch you soon here, MetalBurn!

Best,

Mario

P.S.: MetalBurn!, look at my signature... Cool
