I finally saw and bought this cd yesterday,
my complains: I can't stand another solo of more of 10 minutes of drums , guitar or anything else !
Why on every Dio shows, they have to do this ? it takes at least 25 minutes to do, they can do at least 4 songs during this.
I am a guitar player for a long time, and i know that the public prefer songs than solo parts, the only time that i can accept this is when the player is the star of the band like Eddie Van Halen, or Slash..... and we all know the star of this band...
Or at least cut these parts when you release a cd, i don't think that people listen a solo of ten minutes more than one time, instead me, i want to skip to a track like "one Night in City".....
I am happy that Dio did the complete Holy Diver album on this, from a guitarist stand point, the guitar parts are a little differents then and there, but its a good effort,
Cool that he did some songs less played live before like :Tarot and Babylon....
I Still don't understand that Dio always skip anything from Lock Up The Wolves ???, the first part of this LP, is so good.
This album is the black sheep of the cd collection of Dio....
Maybe the guitarists can't play songs from the Robertson era ? |

yep holydiver is a awesome live cd
and totally agree with you on the solo aspect we could have some elf tracks in the set list would be cool

i like the guitar solo and will probably listen to it again... the drum solo though... i have to admit... i fast forward through that after having listened to it once ... just like pretty much every other drum solo...
i like the cozy powell solo on the rainbow live at berlin dvd though... will probably listen to that at least a couple more times.... |

All good points. I just got both the dvd and cd and have to admit that even though I was for the most part pleased the solo stuff turned me off. To me solos of any kind were cool around 1973, and once you have heard one you pretty much heard them all. Thats not saying Simon Wright and Doug Aldrich arent phenomenal musicians, but it just seems out of place in 2007.
The only other complaint - the keyboards. Maybe its me but they sounded kind of cheesy and off to me.
All that aside Ronnie James still has it unlike Ozzy who cant even take a piss without peeing on his own shoes.

Yeh , i too would love to hear a few more songs & less solo's
it does suck no "Lock Up The Wolves " , i'm afraid this will happen with "Master of the moon" as well which i love , just glad i caught the tour & heard some of it live . |

I agree , it's tough as it seems there are too many songs Ronnie says "have to be played" ..... I'd gladly trade Holy diver , man on the silver mountain etc. for some more rare cuts , we'll see what happens when 2008 dates come around . |

| one thing about holy diver live... i read an interview with ronnie somewhere on the web from 2006... he said that the holy diver live cd was made in 2005, not 1995 as the dvd notes appear to state |

It was actually 2006.
Really? That’s weird, I mean I’m looking at the jacket and press release right now and they both say 1995.
No, no... we’ve never done “Holy Diver” live from start to finish except for when we first started and didn’t have enough material yet. So this is the first time we did something like that... I guess it was around Christmas time so it might have been 2005. But whatever it was, it was just a few months ago. I better tell them to correct that!"

The show was filmed at the London Astoria in October 2005 and released on dvd in the UK on 22 May 2006 but the cd was released 17 April 2006 in UK...sorry not sure of release dates in USA. |

I cant believe how many of you praise this live CD!? as much as I love the man himself he sounds absolutely awful, rough and not on top form at all. It almost pains me to listen to it, sadly. The setlist itself was fucking dynamite! And seeing this tour in Glasgow I can thankfully say it was OUTSTANDING by comparrison. Apparently he had a cold or something at Astoria and it really really ruins it. However, hearing him with Sabs last year just proves that the man still has his pipes! The only saving grace of this CD is the tracks itself and the beautiful drumwork by Simon Wright. Dio said in an interview he couldnt care less about this CD being released and it was a move by the management. Something to the effect of "I'd already released HD once, why do it again?"
Not that Ronnie's opinion influences my own. Because personally I love the idea of hearing the album in it's entirity along with some other severe gems on the end. However, this was NOT the show to record given the circumstances of Dio's health that night. A CD I'd ward everyone away from!
Although he does sound HEAVENLY on the 'Catch The Rainbow' excerpt before Long Live Rock And Roll.  |
