This question is for those who have played some of the solos in Dio songs. My question is which solo is the most difficult to play?

IMO the most difficult DIO solo is the Don't Talk To Stranger's one.

I think it would be different for each person as we each have different "strong points" in our playing .
The Vivian stuff seems more of a chalenge i think , always loved the fire he had back then .

Actually I don't have many problems to play Vivian's solos, really I had some problems playing some Craig's solos from the "Dream Evil" lp.

None of it is terribly difficult... Rowan Robertson and Doug Aldrich are probably the most technically advanced guitarists that RJD has worked with so you might want to check out some of that stuff. But challenging guitar solos aren't generally part of the Dio sound.

Maybe not for you, but for me and i assume from the replies here, that quite a few people find some of the solo's difficult to play.

Im getting to grasps with the DTTS solo at the moment, getting a bit stuck though at the fast part haha.

Slow it down and play it over and over and over and over and over. Do it slowly. If you're making mistakes you are practicing too fast. Work though things slowly and repetitively and gradually build speed. DTTS isn't terribly difficult once you have the movements down. How many hours a day do you practice?

Erm, it differs really to be honest, i dont play nearly as religiously asi used to, now its just for fun, maybe learn a new song (about 2 hours a day on average), but im going to get lessons once ive passed my driving test. Its just speed im not too good with, specially fiddly bits. Cheers for the advice though Smile

Step it up if you can... at least 3hrs a day is what the serious guitarist should be shooting for.

with digital media, it's also easy these days to load a song recording from an 'album' into a software program on a computer, and slow down the recording, and sonically edit out the rest of the band, so you can more or less hear only the solo, but at say, half of the original speed... this way you can easily figure out the notes...

one thing vivian does is a very fast triplet thing kind of like jimmy page used to do, only faster and with a slightly different time/spacing between the three notes of the triplet... plus vivian uses a wider variety of notes in this 'triplet pull-offs'...

that one part from the don't talk to strangers... to me it doesn't sound like the triplet pattern i'm describing above, but something even faster... i think you all know the part i'm talking about... the really fast 'arpeggios' or whatever they are...

on the 'we rock' dvd from 1983 or thereabouts... in the holland show... during the playing of that passage it sounds/appears to me that vivian 'flubs it' or rushes it a tad, but then settles in...

i have to agree that aldrich is a really good guitarist...

i've got the evil or divine from 2002... i like his interpretation of the last in line solo...

the way he plays it a lot like the album, but puts his own stamp on it at the same time...

yeah he's really good...

i can't believe sometimes how fast his fingers move...

I wish i could have something to add here but i myself never mess with learning the work of others, i play along and add my own solos in all over the place but never wrked out the songs because of working on my own sound and style. Love all the solo's done by all DIO's guitarists though! Great stuff!

You learn a lot from learning other people's solos. All the great stylists (Campbell included) talk about learning the solos of their idols when they were younger. It helps you to develop your style because it gives you ideas that never would have occured to you otherwise, and it also helps you to improve your technique; if I want to improve my playing I pick something that's over my head and learn to play it. Any musician is the product of this influences.

Yes i think you are right on that. And i have done cover tunes in a band so i've learned songs before but just never did a lot or made a habit of it. And i found for me that it was so much easier to just go with what i feel, don't think about it just let it flow and the coolest stuff takes shape... i'm sure you know what i mean. Wink
However just listening to music will enfluence how you play also so it's just one of those things .. some do it and some don't.
