Deep breath.....Manchester...you should be ashamed of yourselves! Attendance wasn't great for an arena gig: standing area became sparse before the mixing desk and blocks 113 around to 104 were covered up (the upper tier was closed completely). Probably the eqivalent of almost 2 nites @ the Apollo. And as for the beer throwing dickheads, well, more on that later....
Iced Earth: really good set. Shame they were only on for 30 minutes. Ripper Owens: what a voice! Recognised some of the band from Beyond Fear. I'll have to investigate further...
Lamb of God: knew what to expect as I'd seen them with Slayer. The ONLY reason they must have been on the bil was to get some of the kids to the show...Megadeth would have a better bet!
Moment of sweetness: the kid I saw put a Heaven And Hell shirt OVER his Lamb Of God shirt...said it all for me!
Heaven And Hell: Incedible!! I was stood right in front of Geezer and could see the guys were really enjoying themselves. I saw them at Radio City and must say everthing is much tighter (as it would be 6 months later) and Heaven And Hell, the song, lasted much longer than it did that March night in New York City. Once they were locked in the groove...it was magical!
Shadow Of The Wind was the 1st encore and that's when the beer throwing started, probably by just one dickhead, that landed on stage to Ronnie's left. If looks could kill...
Then, Neon Knights...just before the end of the 2nd verse, another thrown beer, this time JUST missed Ronnie which totally threw him and he got totally lost vocally, which REALLY pissed him off! He went over to Geezer and signalled what looked like "Let's Get Off...NOW!" but they carried on, luckilly. Dio came to the front of the stage and mouthed quite clearly "YOU F**KIN' ASSHOLE!". Gig well and truly spoilt for Ronnie...something to mull over with his Guiness & Curry afterwards in Rusholme!
My parents, who took me to my 1st Sabbath gig at Stafford in '82, said the sound was pretty awful from where they were (Block 114) until about halfway through and you couldn't hear Tony when they came out. Then everything went TOO loud! What is it with sound engineers who think a great front of house sound means turning everything up to 11?!
For the future: if they play the UK again, then either 3 arena dates tops or, fingers crossed, theatres! If only last nite's gig was at the Apollo...

WTF....Why throw anything on stage
I just don't understand this...do you think it could be down to the fact there was ''different'' kinds of fans at these shows.
And if there is any 'beer throwers' out there please come and tell us why you are such twats.
Thanx Hazza |

Review from Mannchester Evening News Online:
http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/entertainment/music/live_reviews/s/1023800_heaven__hell__men_arena?rss=yes
MANY religious souls, whatever their belief, have one point where their pilgrimage should end.
For the luscious haired, leather clad minority that still choose to pay their penance at the font of all things metal there are few people they would choose to see dishing out a sermon.
Tony Iommi is rightfully pegged as the man who started the drift into ear bleeding, devil-baiting, roar and roll, and his appearance in Manchester proved the point.
A bizarre, hushed atmosphere in a vast arena that was almost half full suggested that someone had overstepped the mark in thinking such a vintage offering could wow a weekend crowd.
As soon as the lights went down and an impressive church like backdrop appeared, it was obvious that for even a small crowd, Heaven and Hell could deliver.
With a voice that should make Lesley Garrett blush, Ronnie James Dio reaches for the empty corners of the room effortlessly.
Spreading a set over the later Sabbath albums, Children of the Sea, Voodoo and the remarkable I give every opportunity for Iommi, the bassist Geezer Butler and their singer, the chance to shine.
A blast from the past in every sense, the show is every bit a museum piece.
No chart could tolerate such musicianship in this day and age and it’s the sustained bravado of Dio and the undoubted ability of the Sabbath legends that keeps the show’s head above water and offers great comfort that this well attended phenomenon amazingly survives. |

If you don't like a show, fucking leave. To throw beer at any band, let alone this one, you would have to be a complete piece of shit who deserves to get their stupid ass kicked, IMO _________________ "...you were a fool but that's cool, it's alright!" |

Hazza, i must have been pretty close to you as i was front row and pretty much right in front of Geezer. When Ronnie came over our side i could have easily touched him if he'd have reached out!
Iced Earth: really liked this band beforehand and they didn't dissapoint at all! Ripper is fucking ace!
LoG: Dont like these that much but they were really good live.
H&H: What can i say? One of the bets shows ive ever been to (alongside Maiden), and i saw when Ron nearly got hit with the beer, i was thinking what he clearly mouthed haha. I got an Iommi pick too
Overall, a fantastic night, absolutely amazingly ace _________________ If I speak at one constant volume. at one constant pitch. at one constant rhythm.

Was a fantastic night in Manchester.
The beer throwing dick head kinda ruined the end, to throw something at Dio should be punished, its just wrong!
Die young was amazing, and Ronnie's voice was on top form again |

Great post Hazza.I was there in block 114 but the sound was good for me.I think it was louder for Lamb of God but I had my earplugs in for most of that set.
I could not believe the beer throwing during Neon Knights. The band were playing really well and it was a great set so why .was it Ozzy fanboys? I was also at Stafford Bingley Hall in 82,my favourite ever show. _________________ The trouble with the rat race is that even if you win you are still a rat. |

I was stood a little way back - sound was fine, mayube Iommi was a tad quiet. Never seen or heard either support band before. Liked Iced Earth. LOG - well, they weren't as awful as I expected, but still pretty awful. had to keep shuffling back to avoid the fight pit.
Nothing to add to comments about H&H - fantastic. I felt mezmerised - couldn't lose tha attention to join in half the time! _________________ Along Came A Spider..... |

SET LIST
1. Mob Rules
2. Children Of The Sea
3. I
4. Sign Of The Sourthen Cross
5. Voodoo
6. Vinny Appice
7. Computer God
8. Falling Off The Edge Of The World
9. Die Young
10. Heaven And Hell
encore :
11. Shadow Of The Wind
12. Neon Knights
Quite simply like watching gods on stage. My god were the band tight. We stood right under Iommi at the front and so got a change to watch the man in action - his guitar playing is so effortless....amazing! Lots of smiles and he even gave the horns a couple of times. Geezer was a man possessed and seemed to be giving is loads - top player! Vinny was awsome and never missed a beat. Ronnie was quite simply outstanding - How on hell he keeps going is beyond me! He reeally worked the stage and the crowd and his voice is still THE voice - unbelievable. The stage set was incredible with some different lighting and effects from the DVD of the show - Vinnys solo was also different so I didn't feel I knew any of what was coming during the show! Without question one of the best shows I have ever attended. The sound was on the money - I wish they had videod this show for release!!
Iced Earth were excellent and Lamb of God were OK - not my cup of tea but they were ok - the crowd were not as agressive during their set as I thought they were going to be. Iced Earth have a new fan and Heaven&Hell have gaing massive respect and I can't wait for this new album!! _________________ Stand up and Shout!!!!! |

Heres some clips I took from the Manchester gig;
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Dj__qtrL7e8
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=UfaT-fJUoMo
Sounds not up to much, but the video qualitys not too bad!
Great night!
Took me back 25 years this did.
With ref to the beer throwing (3.05 mins in on the second vid) I think its more a carry over from Lamb of God - where they encourage such things, and was possibly done by one of their 'crowd'.
It severely pissed Ronnie off though and is not something thats tolerated in Dio gigs. _________________ Oh No
