| I had an argument with a guy once because I said that Jimi needed a singer. He went off on this whole tangent that those songs have lived for over thirty years and are still popular, so Jimi had the perfect voice for that music. He failed to understand that as a vocalist I have never bought a Hendrix album. They just dont sound good to me. Also, how many women out there are fans buying his albums. The reason his music lives on is because every kid who buys a guitar and starts taking lessons is told that he was the best ever, and if they want to learn the guitar they should be listening to him. He is a symbol of the pshychodelic time period which he was spawned. I personally prefer Jim Morrison as a symbol for the time period, because I write lyrics, and he was very good at it. The funny thing is, that at 37 yrs old, I just started playing the guitar, and still have no interest in Hendrix. Maybe I will develop a respect for him as I go on, but I'm a metal guy. and There are so many guitarists that are better in my eyes ie. Randy Rhoads! |
Sorry to jump back to an earlier point in the conversation, but I recently found out something interesting. Jimi Hendrix once asked Arthur Brown to form a band - and Arthur turned him down so he could continue with his own more experimental stuff. Man, I wonder how the 2 would have sounded together?! Can you imagine Hendrix coupled with the guy who brought us Fire?! (Not the Hendrix song obviously ) _________________ Along Came A Spider..... |

Jimi was very aware of his shortcomings as a singer technically, and it supposedly led to some of his depression and reluctance to finish albums.
But it's very hard to imagine anybody other than him singing his songs. Eric Clapton is also a very limited singer, and not nearly as good technically as Jack Bruce, but he sang a lot of great tracks and gets a lot of feeling into his singing. _________________ Bass guitarists hold it all together. |
