Wright and Mason were in the band right until it ended in 1995 and Mason never left or got sacked. Don't know why Gilmour got rights to the name. I'm not saying he doesn't deserve them though, I'm just surprised.
I disagree with the Gilmour-led version being crap. Division Bell is a fantastic album and then there's PULSE....... Shocked one pf the best live albums ever IMO.

I have edited my last post as Waters is an original member Embarassed sorry M.D.
Division bell does have some great tracks but it's no dark side.
As this thread was originally about tribute bands, the Australian Pink Floyd should not be missed if they come to your town.
I agree that bands without original members should be classed as tribute acts.

No need to say sorry Wink
One tribue I heard good things about was Think Floyd and I believe they're playing near me next month butr I doubt I'll be able to go Sad I just wish Floyd would reform with or without Waters. He wrote fantastic music but live I wouldn't miss him too much.
And you're right Division Bell is no Dark Side or Final Cut. My favourite album of theirs.

With bands that have been around for as long as Pink Floyd with members that have been in the band as long as Gilmour, makes it hard to have a diffinative answer on this subject. Unfortunately the Magic of PF was between two guys that hate each other. neither have the same spark without the other. Thats not to say they still cant put together a good album or write some good songs but separated the magic is just not there.

It is much easier to say that Journey is now just a tribute, because they want a singer to sound like Steve Perry so they can appeal to their fans. Unfortunately as Journey and Judas Priest found out, There is more than just a voice in what appeals to the audience. Personality and presence also mean a great deal. Tim Owens was no Halford he was just an imitation, same goes for the guy who replaced Perry, dont even know his name. I did see Jeff Scott Soto singing with them on youtube though, now that sounds a little more intriguing.

That's a good point about Journey with soundalike singers but then again it means they're able to recreate the hits live and in all fairness that's what people want.
I saw them with Soto back in March. He was excellent, shame they've gotten rid of him already Sad

I think JSS left on his own accord to pursue another band...forget exactly why, I'll see if I can dig that info up.

It sounds to me like he got the boot to be honest. However, Schon did say that they went their 'seperate ways' which would suggest they're still on good terms and both agreed to move on. Who knows, you never get to the bottom of these things. It took me ages to find out that Dio left Rainbow rather than got sacked.

There was a Journey album with only Perry, Schon and Cain, and studio musicians including Randy Jackson of American Idol (barf!) Now THAT should have been called a tribute act, and it was just a chance for Perry to boss everybody around and have his schlocky pop songs played by studio musicians while "tolerating" Schon and Cain probably.
What a freakin' dickhead! Without Journey nobody would even know who the fuck Steve Perry is to this day!!!
So I say, get a singer who can sing the material and F**CCK Steve Perry! (Good singer though he is.)
(How 'bout that Alativity, I hear he's available!)

I think it depends on how the history of the band has gone. I mean, e.g. members ABC&D formed a band in 1960. In 1965 A left and was replaced by E. EBCD played together for another 10 years before B left. F comes on etc. etc. So by now, 35 yrs later, we have members EFGH. Three of these guys have played for a substantial amount of time with at least one original member. The feel of the band I think is more likely to be within EFGH than with a band who's members revolved much faster. If the changes happen very slowly, and all members have played with at least an original member and the band still sounds and feels the same or similar to when it first started, I see no reason why it can't be the same band.

However, there is a problem if some integral writer leaves. If songs are mostly written by one member and then the feel of the band changes (say Iommi left Sabbath after he was the only original) then it isn't the same. Each case should be judged on it's merits I guess.

When Alice left Alice Cooper, he was perfoming as Alice Cooper - one fifth of the original band. Yet the other 4/5s were called the Billion Dollar Babies. I don't think there would be many instances where this could happen - it's only because of his name. Otherwise it would make more sense for it to have been the other way round.

It also depends on the direction of the band. Journey seemed to go into Tribute mode with getting a Steve Perry Knock off. They didnt come out saying wait until you here our new music, it was wait until you here this guy do our old stuff, he sounds just like Seve. That makes it hard to take the new guy seriously. He's just a stand in.
