I read that a state in America had passed a law declaring that bands without any original members must clearly label themselves as tribute acts.
Do you agree with this and also what do you think of bands like Thin Lizzy reviving themselves after losing an influential member. Should they use their own name for example? |

A band with no original members is pretty lame, unless the band didn't get really famous until later after several lineup changes, such as Journey. If Steve Perry and Jonathan Caine tried to call themselves Journey however, that would suck.
As far as Thin Lizzy goes, I have no problem with some members touring - obviously Phil Lynot is no longer available for the job.
In the case of Pink Floyd, there are generally no original members anymore, but there are legalities behind that - if the original member who thought of the name quits, he/she cannot take the name with them if they don't plan to use it. So Roger Waters can't say "I'm not going to use the name Pink Floyd but neither can you" because you're taking away people's livelihood. _________________ Bass guitarists hold it all together. |

To touchy of a question for me to vote because there are so many things involved..... as Dman put it is the closest i could come to it.
Take Molly Hatchet... they put out CD's without one original member and without the sound that Molly Hatchet had. They should have gone with Hatchet or something.
I think whatever the fan base excepts should be Ok IMO Pink Floyd only has guitarist #2 in the line-up running with the name BUT he holds it together and still has that Pink Floyd sound and to me he is now Pink Floyd and that is a hard sell because Waters was so much of that sound that it's still a hard call. _________________ GUITARGOD |

You know, I thought this was pretty cut and dry until you guys mentioned Pink Floyd. Now you're making me rethink a little. _________________ Sit on it, Potsie. |

they should be a tribute band if no original members are there!
I mean, its elementary, if there are no members left of a band when they first started then they are a completely new entity with none of the older influences and input. If anything they should have a new name or something...
as for a law saying they are a tribute band, can they do that? _________________

Jefferson Airplane begot Jefferson Starship and Jefferson Starship begot Starship. This took many decades and switching of members.
What's funny is, I remember when I was in high school, both Jefferson Airplane and Starship were touring in America at the same time! _________________ Sit on it, Potsie. |

But Pink Floyd still have two original members (Mason/Wright)
To be honest I think the idea is good but I don't think that bands can be generalised like that, they may each have different circumstances. I'll vote not sure. |

"We built this city on rock and roll!" How did Grace Slick ever go from singing White Rabbit and Somebody to Love to that? _________________ Bass guitarists hold it all together. |

There are no original members in Pink Floyd. The members that everyone recognizes joined in 1968, but the band started in 66. Roger Waters did not quit either. Gilmour walked out on him and he finished the Final Cut without him. Waters then put the band to rest figuring it was over. Gilmour then Came back with Mason and Wright and sued for the name. Still cant figure out how he won, but I think tha Waters didnt think he could lose and therefor didnt put enough effort into fighting for it.
Now go vote on the name of the forum band before someone starts a tribute _________________ Check out Al Diamond Phillips/Nevermet on the web

Don't want to start an argument (mainly because I'm probably wrong) but according to Wikipedia the band formed in 1965 and their lineup was:
Syd Barrett – rhythm guitar, lead vocals
Bob Klose – lead guitar
Roger Waters – bass, vocals
Rick Wright – keyboards, vocals
Nick Mason – drums, percussion |

I know that mason & wright werent in the band when it ended, so maybe thats how gilmour got the name, by pulling in two of the original members. the problem is that PF has been lame without Waters. _________________ Check out Al Diamond Phillips/Nevermet on the web
