...I loved the storyline of Magica....I interpreted it as Ronnie's way of describing the war of good & evil...in a very interesting & abstract way...with a very evil power/entity & a hero...much as things will be in the end... ...& I loved the story at the END... ...I wish Ronnie would tell us more!...Imagine the real life stories he could tell from his travels & experiences throughout his career from around the planet Earth! |
I think we will get Magica 2....if not I will write it and send it to him ...I just can't wait for the new cd....if ''Master of the Moon'' is anything to go by.....I think we will get a cracker of album! |

There were concept albums before Tommy. The Moody Blues did Days Of Future Passed in 1967 and A Question Of Balance in 1969. Tommy also came out in 1969. Not sure what concept album pre-dated Days Of Future Passed, but there may have been one. |

Thanks for pointing me to this thread. I wanted to discuss the story of Magica with anyone who is interested. At first I was a bit put off by the electronic voice and the cliche-sounding names of the characters. But after a while I found the story to be very engaging and well-thought out, making use of archetypes and religious overtones.
Magica is a mix of science fiction and fantasy. Aliens discover the frozen planet, and they piece an ancient story together from long-buried manuscripts. The aliens comment that the inhabitants of Otherworld have parallels to their own society. Does that imply a link between the "trolls, ogres and gargoyles" of Otherworld, and the aliens -- perhaps even an ancestry?
Is Otherworld envisioned as another planet, or a more like another dimension? Is Otherworld actually Hell -- or is Hell yet another, removed dimension? Hell is referenced when Astaroth, Shadowcast's master, is mentioned.
At the end, when the aliens say "all traces of Magica must be eliminated. Delete, delete, delete..." what is going on here? Could some residue of magic from the wizards be having a negative effect on the aliens? If the aliens are descendents of the inhabitants of Otherworld, then that would make sense... |

Ronnie James Dio was interviewed in Finnish radio show Metalliliitto and Dio told that he wants to do Magica part 2 and part 3 and he has already written some songs for the next Magica album. _________________ "Vaikka totuus ja valhe vaihtelevat

You just got to love the inst. Song "Annica" Goldy gets a bunch of brownie points from me just for that one song.
Also because I'm a sucker for instrumentals, lol. |

In my opinion MAGICA is the worst album of Dio. Its style is much different from Dio's usual in all other albums. |
Blimey I'm surpried you think it's that bad don't own all of the Dio stuff (very lttle in fact) but i don't think much can stand up to Magica. But then again it is a concept album and you either love 'em or hate 'em. |

I love Magica but think it may be a little overated at times be people i do like many other Dio albums more than Magica.
But then again iv only had the album for maybe nearly a year now & listen to it maybe only 3 or 4 times.
im planning on giving it another spin soon maybe it will grow on me some more in time. _________________

As a whole, its definetly not my favorite album, but it is not the worst album either.
Taking just the actual songs though, that makes the album jump a few spots up. _________________

I like Magica, it's not my favorite, and I prefer KTD and MOTM, but I like it. I would enjoy anything new that Dio would do. _________________ Gene Simmons says he came up with the heavy metal hand sign, but of course he invented breathing and shoes, too..-Ronnie James Dio |

So, looks like we all either love it, or we don't. Count me among the "love it" group.
The thing with concept albums is that you really need to keep an open mind when listening. You really need to listen to it all the way through with no distractions. Magica isn't something you listen to for the first time while driving or organizing your sock drawer. The first time I listened to it, that's all I did. I just sat there and listened so I could focus all of my attention on it.
Man...what a trip it is! |

| Some of Dio's best material is on this album (Fever Dreams, Losing My Insanity, Challis, Turn To Stone, Feed My Head) but i think it totally fails as a concept album. My main evidence is the fact that Ronnie has to actually tell us the story at the end of the album. ummmm....okay..... Did Geoff Tate need to explain operation mindcrime to us? No, he didn't. As a piece of heavy metal music, this album is great, but as a concept album it just doesn't work. Having a few robot voices speak between songs doesn't make it a concept album. |
