Dio~Holy Diver

Recently I heard the actual album for the first time, here is my impression:

Stand up and Shout-A power song but not a good opener. The problem is the fact that it does not properly precede Holy Diver. However, its a good party song (especially if you're in the mood for getting drunk..just a thought)

Holy Diver-Part 1, the opening, I don't know if it was keyboards or something else, but holy diver, it was good. The sound is just mysterious and entrancing. Then it begins to tone down and then come back, with what sounds like a roar or a moan of the devil. That's enough to scare anyone
The main of the song, part 2, is excellent. The bass lines, guitar, drums, and of course Dio's vocals are all perfect. The guitar solo, part 3, is also great. This is a song that every person should hear..just once.

Gypsy-This is an awesome song. The opening, "Ahhh, Gypsy" is perfect. The innuendos and everything make this a song for any occasion. It's scary, sexy, sweet, sour, strong, weak, emotional, rock hard.

Caught in the Middle- A song about life. This is a song for any one who's down, up, happy, depressed, vocated, married, alone, related, anyhing. We are all caught in the middle. If this song doesn't get you off your feet and jamming, what will?

Don't Talk to Strangers-This is a song that takes every thing we were told as children and says Fucku. i mean, the meaning of this song is do what you want. Live your life. It's similar to Swift's "A Modest Proposal", because it overstresses a rule to prove its absurdity.

Straight Through the Heart- is it about falling in love, being heartbroken, losing some one close to death, losing your metal albums, what? It is the ultimate song and is one of those sad songs that only makes you stronger. Here it comes again, straight through the heart.

Invisible- There is a short song that comes before this....or just an opening, I ain't sure. That song is very good as a prelude, because, despite its being not heavy, it opens you up for the opening riff and line of Invisible.
The song itself makes you stronger....You actually feel invisible.
When Dio starts to repeat the "be" and then says invisible, you know you're listening to classic Heavy Metal.

Rainbow In the Dark- Similar to straight through the heart, but it does not make you superstrong. Its actually kind of psychoerotic.
As I understand, Dio actually hated this song. I can see why, not that its bad, but it is not his best but is the one every one seems to recognize as Dio.

Shame on the Night-A good ending. If you play this at night, you can sing along as the Devil sings right beside you, both of you karaokeing along to Dio.

I've only been listening to Dio for about 8 or nine months. I bought Holy Diver Live first, but then heard Holy Diver (the song). I didn't find Holy Diver (the album) for a while (more of my laziness)

I hear Invisible much differently....When he sings, "she had 13 years of teenage tears, never a helping hand. She had 14 more of the rain before, she saw the sight of land. She was a photograph just ripped in half a smile inside a frown..."

You know how kids can go somewhere else when they are being abused? That's what I hear...it may not be what he is saying, but who really knows. I think most of his lyrics are and can be interpreted many different ways.

But nice review Obcene...and it's cool to have a "new" Dio fan around Wink

Invisible is a gem on that cd...I read it different I think Ronnie is singing about oppression...sometimes parents...can inflict stress on their children...we do dominate them harshly at times...I know I did when my daughter was growing up.

Ronnie will tell you that everyone hears something different in his lyrics thats what makes a song special to that one person what you get from it is not what the next person may get from it

I disagree with you, Stand Up and Shout is the perfect opener. Dio has a way of smacking you in the mouth to get your attention with song. Stand Up and Shout is a perfect example of this.

Okay I'm going to admit to everybody now that I only actually bought Holy Diver two days ago. I think I probably lost any credibility that I may well have earned Laughing anyway it's great. In fact it has already gone right into to my top five Cool

hmmm....
I dont know how to feel about Holy Diver these days
I used to listen to the album religiously and I mean, it's still a great listen and a classic album...but some songs seem really rushed and filler-ish, I think it's just a case of overlistening but I do agree that Stand Up And Shout is a bit of a risky opener, but I think thats how RJD likes to open his albums with a 'smack in the face' someone said, but I think I'd prefer the deep, brooding introduction of Holy Diver to open the album, as it's so daunting and then it slumps into a heavy metal onslaught so I think if you switched the places of Holy Diver (title track) and SUAS (stand up and shout) it would work quite nicely though I love the fact the album closes with Shame On The Night, and the 'CRUCIFY THE DIVER!' It's such a perfect ending to a superb album.

Same with Egypt on The Last In Line and even the closer on Angry Machines *which I dont listen to much, 'This Is Your Life', the man really has a knack for ending an album cause it's just breathtaking.

Anyway cool review from the perspective of a beginner fan

I think if you string "Caught in the Middle, Dont talk to Strangers, Straight Through The Heart, and Invisible they link together.

Its all about growing up and losing your innocence to a pretty f'd world.
