I was packing for a drive to Chicago, and I asked my dad if he wanted me to bring any of the Dio or Sabbath cds that he had from years ago (this was just last year this happened). Of course, I didn't know who Dio was at the time (I had heard of him, I just didn't know the music), but we listened to it in the car, and I absolutely loved it. The first song I heard was Holy Diver. I couldn't stop listening for the whole time we were in Chicago, and I've been hooked ever since. The seventh of July makes one full year into Dio! _________________ Gene Simmons says he came up with the heavy metal hand sign, but of course he invented breathing and shoes, too..-Ronnie James Dio |

I was 9.Dream Evil had just been released. My sisters had it on cassette (now its mine),they also had Last In Line.In the last 80īs and in 90-92 there was a local radio station playing lots of rock and metal including DIO and Rainbow, from there i recorded every songs.(Hey i was just a kid with no money.. )
I didnt have a cd player back then and it wasnt until 92 i got my first cd.It was the Black Sabbath Dehumanizer,i didnt even know it was with Dio before i got home and listen to it. I only bought it because it was really cheap..Then when heard it..DIO!!!! Then i got Look Up The Wolves on LP.The rest was just copies i had on cassettes + Sacret Heart from the local libary..Then in 96 i bought Angry Machine..I didnt read metal mags so i didnt know much.. but then after Angry Machine i bought everthing i could find by DIO.
Dont know how many albums i got.. but its over 50 original cds with DIO on vocals,a few bootlegs,At least 15 LPīs...DIO - Time Machine on VHS (oh i forgot to mention this,i bought this in 1991) + 10 DVDīs.
DIO RULES. |

When I was young I had a friend whose older brother was a big Deep Purple fan. He had all of the Deep Purple albums, as well as all the Rainbow albums that were out at the time. I remember we would listen to them, and we listened to Heaven and Hell when that album first came out. I still remember first seeing the angels smoking cigarettes on that album cover, while listening to it...
A few years later I started buying my own cassette tapes, which included a lot of Deep Purple, Rainbow, Whitesnake and then Holy Diver when it first came out. I used to think of Holy Diver as "weight-lifting music" and I would listen to it to motivate me to lift and work out. It was great music to be angry to, and to get the adrenalin going. When Last in Line and Sacred Heart came out, I bought those in cassette tape form, as well, and I went to the Sacred Heart tour concert in Pittsburgh in 1985 when I was in high school. After Sacred Heart, I went to college and I kind of lost interest in heavy metal... seems a lot of other people did, as well.
Years later, I dug out those old tapes and gave them another listen to, and found I still liked them! Especially Holy Diver. And after seeing Dio in concert again with Deep Purple and The Scorpions in 2003, during the Killing the Dragon tour, I kind of had a resurgence of interest in Dio and heavy metal in general. I was amazed at how good Dio's voice still sounded, and how much the concert had his "old 80's classic sound." I've since gotten Magica, Killing the Dragon and Master of the Moon on CD. |

I first heard Holy Diver and fell in love, so I *borrowed* it from my uncle.
Sacred Heart came after that and then Very Beast Of.
I'm going to buy the Rainbow Live in Munich soon, and I am so EXCITED! I also have Black Sabbath Dio Years and I want "Dehumanizer" cause it rocks!

I guess my Dio collection goes back to 1981 when Black Sabbath released the MOB RULES album. It was during Grade Nine Music classes on Fridays when my teacher allowed us to bring records (those were the days lol) to school. A classmate brought along his M.R record along with the ever classic HEAVEN AND HELL album. I immediately got hooked...I was very lucky to catch Sabbath with Ronnie (and Vinnie) in concert at I was mesmerised.
Since then,I have seen Dio at least 4 times starting with SACRED HEART..and as recently as couple months ago when my wife and I saw the HEAVEN AND HELL show. (Needless to say the memories came flooding back of that one rocking night in '81).

I was allowed to do that at school as well bring records in...normally it was around about the end of term and after exams my records never got played
It was always the Abba or The Clash that got picked ...never my Deep Purple in Rock or my Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow.

When I was in my Music Theory class at school, we had a "free day" and could bring in some of our own music. At the time I didn't have any Dio cds, so I brought in W.A.S.P.
Needless to say, our class was the best that day Our teacher wouldn't care if their were curse words in our songs, so it was cool.
Those were the fun times.

Well...it also helped that our teacher mainly didn't pay attention to the music we were playing
He stayed in his office majority of the time that day.

I began to listen to Rainbow because of Cozy Powell. Long Live Rock'n'Roll was my first time I heard Ronnie's voice. Then there was Rising, and then - The Last In Line, my first Dio album. Then Ronnie wisited Kiev with the gig, and before this show I bought some more. Then there were Ronnie's early years - from Ronnie And The Redcaps to Elf, and at last Black Sabbath.
I heard Rainbow, BS, Elf and Dio, and I don't know why but most of all I like his solo works, especially two albums - Holy Diver and The Last In Line \../ _________________ I'll carry on to do it right, or... get out! (c) Cozy Powell

Man what a crazy thread! I'm sooo happy to hear that young people are finding out about Dio! I'm only 36 (only? ) but and I first heard RJD during the 'Metal Years'...I was a 13 yr. old guitar god wannabe, and I remember seeing the "Last In Line" video and was my mind was BLOWN. I used to try to slow down the tape to watch Vivian Campbell do that lick so I could learn it. Last in Line is one of the GREATEST guitar solos of all time, and of course Ronnie's voice fucking KILLS it. Sorry to cuss so much, but JESUS, no one rocks like Dio. NO ONE!
o.k. I'm going to settle down now. |
