I 2nd you on this one Tuberkulose:I don't like Dream Theater and I think they're boring. It doesn't mean they are "bad".It's just a personal taste. _________________ FIRST FRENCH FAN OF

They really are. I've tried to listen to them many times, but to me Dream Theater's music is just annoying and boring so I don't care wasting my time on that band. |
Ahh!!!! So now we get the reasoned comment rather than the disparaging singular comment.
If you'd have put this point of view across to begin with, you would have added to the broad debate.

Bands like this are almost for musicians only kind of taste, they lack the "quick hook" because there is alot to the music and it's almost work to listen to it so if you dont really hear what it is that they are doing it seems boring. Sometimes there is power in simplicity and that usually has more HOOK then complexity. I love stuff like this if I'm in the mood for it, but here in a few minutes I think I'll poor another glass of wine and watch EVIL OR DIVINE. _________________ GUITARGOD |

you're right, you have to listen a Dream Theater album a few times to like it. But when you like it, you will like it longer then the simpler music. It takes time, but if you've taken the time it will never bore you. _________________ You're Breathless, ready to burn

Either way I haven't pre-ordered it yet. It's a good price on HMV Uk and I've got a discount voucher so I'll get it from there (at some point). |

It's amazing the number of young musicians I meet who are heavy into DT. I've listened to them many times and just don't seem to get it. I think they're lightweights, and combine the worst elements or progressive, metal, pop and what have you into something pretty unlistenable. Just my opinion. _________________ Bass guitarists hold it all together. |

Never really got to hear these guys...
However they have a song called "Under a Glass Moon" that I am very fond of, and from what I understand, that wasn't even one of their hit songs.
Any particular albums or songs I should give a listen? _________________ A rumble of thunder

Personally I'd start off with Images & Words which was the first with James Labrie and the album that broke them through. It has Under A Glass Moon and their hit Pull Me Under aswell. After that maybe Awake or Metropolis Pt.2: Scenes From A Memory. I don't have many of their albums so I can't really say much but definitely start with Images & Words (which I reviewed in the reviews section).
Talking about songs give Spirit Carries On a listen if you can (from Metropolis Pt.2). It's one of my favourites; beautiful. |

Images And Words is good to begin with. I wouldn't start with Awake to soon, not really my favorite album. But you just can't go wrong with Scenes From A Memory. _________________ You're Breathless, ready to burn
