I'll comment on "Lonely is the Word" because it's one of my favorites off of "Heaven and Hell" and an underrated gem IMHO.

This to me sounds like some sort of a person....maybe a demi-god
(I've been higher than stardust, I've been seen upon the sun)
who is trying to round up people to this road...some kind of place that is in space....maybe out of this world actually.
(Come on join the traveler if you've got nowhere to go, hang your head and take my hand it's the only road I know)

2 awesome solos and excellent vocals by Ronnie and this song is considered a masterpiece....in my book

I could be very wrong on this one....but thats my interpretation

Lonely Is The Word: Could be about a very famous person, someone who was well loved, but they lose everything. "It's a long way to nowhere, and I'm leaving very soon. Along the way, we passed so close to the back side of the moon." This sounds like it's about someone who set out to discover something that would make them very famous, but they never got it. "I used to count in millions, then, but now I only count in one."; This person used to think that they could do anything, but they get discouraged after a lot of failure. They go through so much hardship that they decide, no matter what you do, maybe you can't have everything ("Maybe life's a losing game."). Referencing previous lines "Join the traveler, if you've got nowhere to go. Hang your head, and take my hand, it's the only road I know." It sounds like this person then reaches the resolution that they aren't the only person that ever felt that way.
The Sign Of The Southern Cross: "If there isn't light where no one sees, then how can I know what you might believe." If the teacher of a certain religion or philosophy doesn't have any thing to teach, then what do you believe in? The stories told that can't be real, somehow must reflect the truth we feel." All the stories told by different religions aren't ment to be taken literally, they are metaphors for something in real life. The rest of this song uses a lot of metaphor and meaning to tell a practical story, and it would take a lot of looking over the lyrics to discover the overall meaning...I have to say that I'm not sure.
Falling Off The Edge Of The World: I think that this is about someone who thinks that they belong in a certain social circle ("I should be at the table round, a servant of the crown."). And through all of these circles and groups, we are segregating ourselves, and this will eventually lead to us becoming even more and more divided than we are now. "Falling Off The Edge Of The World", as it were. We need to bring ourselves together, and it will be a better world "As we build a new life from the past.".
The Devil Cried: I think this song is about challenging authority, whatever that is for you, and that sometimes the best way to getting what you want is not to fight, but to sympathize. I don't think this song was written about a "Devil" literallly, I think it was written about someone who has become a tyrant because of the way they were treated. "Then I told him that I love you, and The Devil Cried." They were never loved, and so sometimes that is the only way to get through to someone.
Shadow Of The Wind: My interpretation of this is what Dio said he wrote it about; a drug addict who got clean, but they returned to drugs when he couldn't resist anymore, because it gives him pleasure, and the machinations of this person's mind. "If words had names like red and green, and two for sympathy, black and white and in between; then you'd be misery." This person hates what they've become, and what the rest of the world thinks of them ("Every day is an inquisition, who are you, what are you, why?).
Ear In The Wall: I don't think this song is about someone literally seeing an ear in the wall. The way I interperet this song is this: I think Dio was inspired to write this because of the current situations with wire taps, and everyone in the government denying anything to do with it. "You must be going blind. What's wrong, were you born before your god invented eyes?". "Cry wolf and you'll move into a special kind of danger zone." "It's not who you are, it's who you know, what's it gonna be?" This could be talking about all these people who are real buddies with the government, who are not being watched, but all kinds of other people who are relatively well known being monitored.
Those are my interpretations, but there are lots of others I came up with while I was writing this.
