[Hope this is the right place to post this - if not I'm really sorry]
To my surprise Heaven & Hell will be touring very close to where I live when they play the Hallam FM arena in November. To make a dream show that much dreamier, one of the support acts are Iced Earth. Two of my fave bands on one bill.
However I have never been to a gig in my life and I really wouldn't know what to expect so I have to ask 2 initial questions:
1) Is it advisable to go to gig on your own - especially if it is your first one? None of my friends like the same music as me so I don't have much choice...
2) Which is better - seated or standing?
Thanks!

I've never been on my own to a gig. If you are a confident person who can happily talk to strangers, I would have thought you'd be alright - everyone there is there for the same music you are, so you will have something in common. Personally, I'm a bit shy, so I would feel a bit awkward. As long as you know where you're going and what you're doing you should be OK, especially if it's close to where you live, you know the area etc. On the other hand, there is the safety aspect. Do you have perhaps a brother/cool parent or relative? I know it hardly sounds cool, but I'd go with my mum if I had to - she likes Alice I'm just thinking of the safety aspect here - I worry a lot when I'm out alone in a strange place.
You get a much better atmosphere with standing - can be very very hot sometimes, but that's about the only downfall I've experienced (apart from if the audience is all young kids - they throw bottles around and mess about - but I doubt that'll be a problem for H&H, as I expect there'll be a lot of older people there).
I think we need the opinion of someone older and wiser, however..... _________________ Along Came A Spider..... |

It's funny you should ask that, after playing alot of Dio in the car my mum has admitted to liking Dio, but unfortunately I don't think she would appreciate Iced Earth - plus I think Lamb of God are also playing and I'm not kken on them, nevermind my Mum!
(plus for my mum to go see H&H with me, I'd have to go see Donny Osmond with her so it looks like I'm going solo) |

Well, it sounds like you are young...I wouldn't advise going it alone. I don't know what it's like where you live, but you have to be careful. As far as sitting or standing...it depends on the seating arrangement. If the floor is general admission, unless you are tough and tall, or don't mind standing near the back or sides, I would take a seat...especially if you take your mom. I've had some really scarey things happen on the floor at Dio shows when they were GA, but I either went alone or with another female. If then venue has seating on the floor, everyone stands anyway, but at least in the US, there is security to keep people from getting dangerous.
If it takes you going to a Donny Osmond show with your mom in order to make it to this one, do it...you can just close your eyes and imagine you are back at the H&H show...that's what I did at the Eagles...I was so bored that I just thought about how much fun I had at the last Dio show.
Good luck! _________________ "...you were a fool but that's cool, it's alright!" |

Well I'm almost 21, well physically anyway (mentally it varies on the day ). I have one last ray of hope in a friend who I'm going to introduce to Dio, so hopefully I'll get to go to the gig.
From what you say Diodreams I think I'll take a chance on the layout and go seated if I can. I doubt I'll go alone for the first time at least, and if I do take my mum (who is more like a best friend ) I'll bear your advice in mind . |

Don't worry about going on your own...I have the same problem when I go to the F1 Grand Prix races...none of my friends are as passionate about F1 as me...and my wife can't always make the races...when I go to concerts there loads of folks on their own.
Remember its very much different in the UK...there will be no scary moments at any venues in the UK...I have been standing at concerts since I was 13 years old...and the only scary moment I have had was when a busty woman next to me flashed her breasts at David Coverdale I was on my own at that gig
As you are going to a DIO concert the oldies will out number the younger ones...there will be no plastic bottle tossing or plastic pints flying about...the only problems I have found is some unhygienic males at gigs...who have not heard of shampoo
If you are having a drink...have it between the intervals of the bands...I never drink when an act is on stage, you will have a great time...I would keep away from the front row middle if this is your first time...Keep to the right wing.... about 6 rows from the front...if your standing...being seated at a concert is a nightmare becoz security will be on your case everytime you stand up...in some cases you can be removed from the venue.
So make sure you are standing....becoz you will have a lot more fun.
The Hallam FM Arena is a great venue...and a must for standing...don't be seated. |

None of my friends like the bands I like either so I go with my dad instead. There's no way in a million years he'd let me go ta concert on my own and because of an illness he had a few years ago he can't stand for a whole concert. Seating is still fine and when I saw Muse (yes I know) back in November our entire sifde stood so I wouldn't say that security is on you if you stand. It was much to the displeasure of my dad by the way. Especcially when he saw that everyone else was seated I really want to go standing but I might have to wait a few years yet. I'm sure you'll have a great time either way. It'll be full of old farts so there'll be no rowdyness. I think I'll drop the avrage age by quite a bit when I arrive at Brighton |

Advice from an old fartine - or is it fartelle... or farteuse  (Thank YOU, Magica Dragon! We're obviously the ones who control the buzz there... I don't know...?)
Anyway Stained Class, I agree with The Coop and the Holy Man. I'm 1.60 cm which translates into 5 foot 2 and I always buy floor tickets if I can. I've been at a couple of Canadian H&H shows and no trouble whatsoever there. Just stay a away from those moshing pits, you might not find these enjoyable but they've always been under control. Just don't wear your best clothes, I got a beer shower once and some people will always smoke and might burn a hole somewhere. Try not to stand too much in front of the left speakers though, Geezer's bass is evil... Ronnie is always very considerate at serving both sides equally. Tony will more or less stay rooted to his spot on the right, he'll walk to the center only for his solo at the start of Die Young. If you want to be there early and live through the opening acts, ear plugs are a good idea but I always take them out for Ronnie of course
Find someone nice-looking, farts of all ages, and talk to them. You might make some new friends!
Have fun!

You're welcome
I share your pain with that beer shower. I saw Iron Maiden at Earl's Court last year and this missile hit my hard on the back. I looked round to see who threw it........bugger all came of that and then as I turned back round I realised I was soaked in beer! I sat there smelling for the rest of the show
I suppose it could have been worse. The bottle could have been filled with the stuff that got thrown at Trivium....and I would've smelt then |

I had loads of plastic AND GLASS!!! bottles chucked around by kids at Lordi last year. Not good.
I'm not one for moshing - I've never been to a concert where one's being going on near me - I'm relying on being able to slip away to the side should one start up - I'm not buying new glasses because some dudes want to get some bruises! _________________ Along Came A Spider..... |

| I find moshing pointless. Surely you go to enjoy a band playing and not running into each other mindlessly. People should go do it somewhere else and not ruin other peoples' nights out. |

Damn right. Seems like they do it when the performer isn't interesting enough or something. Why divert your attention from a great band? _________________ Along Came A Spider..... |

My advice is to drink heavily!!!!! Nah just kidding get a little drink on if you want like Holy said in between sets.Personally to save my glasses I usually wear my leather with a side pocket If I get the idea to do a little moshing!!!
Standing is great especially with GA in fact at Broomfield they let the GA Floor people in first!!!!However once you get to be a certain age and bruised from other concerts sitting down is a very fine thing,IF YOU CAN FIND A FUCKING SEAT!!!!So you have the best of both worlds.Hey great to hear who the opening bands are give us a setlist and let us know who kicked the most ass!!!!By the way if LAMB OF GOD are gonna be there yes there will definatly be some moshing!!!! |
