Megadeth is an American heavy metal band led by founder, frontman, and songwriter Dave Mustaine. Formed in 1983 following Mustaine's firing from Metallica, the band has since released ten studio albums, three EPs, and two live albums.

As a pioneer of the American thrash metal movement, Megadeth rose to international fame in the 1980s, but were plagued by constant lineup changes, due in part to Mustaine's notorious substance abuse problems. After finding sobriety and securing a stable lineup, Megadeth went on to release a string of platinum and gold albums, including the Grammy nominated, multi-platinum Countdown to Extinction in 1992. Megadeth disbanded in 2002 after Mustaine suffered a severe nerve injury to his left arm, but following extensive physical therapy, Mustaine reformed the band in 2004 and released The System Has Failed, which debuted at #18 on the Billboard Top 200 chart.

Megadeth is known for their distinctive guitar style, often involving complex, intricate musical passages, and trade off guitar solos. Mustaine is also known for his original "snarling" vocal style, as well as his recurring lyrical themes, often involving politics, war, addiction, and more recently, relationships.

As one of the most commercially successful heavy metal bands of all time, Megadeth has sold more than 20 million albums worldwide, including five consecutive platinum albums, with seven consecutive Grammy nominations for Best Metal Performance. In their 21 active years, Megadeth has had 18 official members, with Mustaine remaining as the driving force, main songwriter, and sole original member. Megadeth is often mentioned as one of the "Big Four" thrash metal bands, along with Metallica, Anthrax, and Slayer.

can't wait to hear that! Scabbia's vocals are very good (tho they disappointed me somewhat on the new album, i think it was production tho).

You people definitely need to buy the new Megadeth album when it becomes available. Based on the songs I've heard, you will be pleasantly surprised by the return to the old school sound.

Megadeth's Mustaine Is Pleased With United Abominations

Generally speaking, when one hears a band member rave about their group's latest album, two things come to mind: either they're full of it or full of themselves. Bu when that someone happens to be Megadeth founder/singer/guitarist Dave Mustaine, there's a certain degree of credibility. Renowned for his honesty and occasionally fork-tongued delivery, Mustaine is sincere about his band's latest effort, United Abominations.

"I don't know how long the band will be around for or if this will be our last record, but it's certainly the best we've done in a long time," says Mustaine, before stepping onstage for the inaugural Canadian date of Megadeth's opening stint with the Ronnie James Dio-fronted Black Sabbath — er, Heaven And Hell.

"There's a warmth and chemistry in the band that has been missing for a long time. The new members are surprising me because they've been a blessing. They're the right fit, which is exciting for me. They've gotten used to the idiosyncrasies of this band and are energized."

Cleaning house after 2004's The System Has Failed — an album that saw Megadeth in a state of flux after Mustaine's medically imposed inactivity — Mustaine brought in fresh blood via guitarist Glen Drover, bassist James LoMenzo and drummer Shawn Drover for United Abominations. The results ensure that Megadeth usher in their 25th year with their 11th — and most promising — studio effort. Pointed, heated and raging, while still replete with Mustaine's witty sarcasm, the album is a bombardment of meticulous thrash metal driven by cunning and mature pacing. Even Mustaine sees the evolution.

"I write the music myself and you can tell when a band is going through the motions. When you have to deal with group problems, you tend to turn your ears off. There are only three things that cause problems: women, money and religion. What else has started any war? When I eliminated those problems, I could write more enjoyably."

However, while Mustaine notes that he's pleased with the results on United Abominations, he isn't exactly surprised by the fact that he's written a collection of brutish, expedient thrash metal. After this long in the game, there isn't much room for anything else from a band called Megadeth.

"I see a band's moniker as their face," Mustaine muses. "There's a reason the face is where it is and the ass is where it is.

"There are some bands I won't even listen to because the name offends me. It portrays them as something instantly. Still, on a musical level, I'm not going to make a [affects country tone] Meg'erdeath record any time soon. There's a history to this band that we live up to. Stylistically speaking, this is what I'm good at, and the heart of the music is all that matters."

I've heard the new song Sleepwalker and think its pretty good until it gets to the chorus. I never liked A Toute Le Monde. Always thought it was a boring song, and I'm not sure why it becaome popular among the MD catalog. A new version of that just sounds lame. Re-writing lyrics of old songs to fit new situations is usually a lame idea.

I like "Sleepwalker" and don't mind the chorus.

I hate "A Toute Le Monde" and think adding that lady to the mix is a big mistake. Strangely, many hardcore Megadeth fans really love that song. It has always sounded gay to me.

The best new song I heard them play in concert was "Washington Is Next." They have changed the song a little bit which drastically improved it.

I also look forward to hearing "United Abominations" because the lyrics interest me. And, there is one song on the new album called "Amerikhastan" which I have a good feeling about.

All in all, I think I am so excited about the new Megadeth album because Dave Mustaine is singing better than ever. His nasally, thin vocals seem to be a thing of the past based on his live performance with Heaven and Hell. I was literally shocked to hear his new vocals - that good.

The Drover brothers really bring some talent to the band. Glen has old school sensibilities on the guitar. Shawn is a big Rush fan, so his drumming is inspired by one of the greatest. Oddly, even James LoMenza is kicking ass on stage. He really puts his own stamp on the bass lines and knows how to make a thrash song groove, if you know what I mean.

Tell me about it. I don't get how the hardcore MD fans like this song so much. I used to think maybe it was just Mustaine who loved it and insisted on playing it at every show, but you hear the crowd go wild when the song starts, so they must like it. Or, they're just sheep cheering because they hear something they recognize. It'll be a piss break for me.

Did you go to a recent MD show, or one of the H&H shows?

Dragon -

The release date is tentatively scheduled for May 8, 2007.

Agent Albert -

Yes, I saw them with this particular line-up at Gigantour and then with Heaven and Hell in Canada. Megadeth has been playing songs off of their new album since last year.

Here is a track listing of what we can expect:

1. Sleepwalker
2. Washington Is Next!
3. Never Walk Alone
4. United Abominations
5. Gears Of War
6. Blessed Are The Dead
7. Play For Blood
8. A Tout Le Monde (Set Me Free) - feat. Christina Scabbia
9. Amerikhastan
10. You're Dead
11. Burnt Ice
12. Out On The Tiles (Japan Only - However this special track may appear in extraordinary circumstances)
13. Black Swan (The B-Sides for Special Editions)
14. The Bodies Left Behind (The B-Sides for Special Editions)
15. Special Live Track (The B-Sides for Special Editions)

Dave Mustaine also added:

It is very likely there will be bonus material from the future release "The Making of United Abominations (working title)" included, which would be included on releases in these two territories, as well as special exclusive tracks for major dealers in the US.

MEGADETH's video for the new version of the song "A Tout Le Monde", now retitled "A Tout Le Monde (Set Me Free)", is available for viewing at Underground Video Television (Windows Media).

"A Tout Le Monde", which originally appeared on the 1994 CD "Youthanasia", has created controversy because the song was cited in an online post by Dawson College killer Kimveer Gill as one of his favorites before his Montreal shooting spree last September. MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine contends that he wanted to give the song a second shot at success, as the original video for it had been banned by MTV, and most radio stations followed suit. The track ended up featuring Cristina Scabbia from Italian alt-metal act LACUNA COIL. "The first singer didn't work out," Mustaine told Straight.com, "the second one didn't work, and the third one was Lisa Marie Presley. She was on the way to the airport, and we had to call and say, 'Sorry, we changed our minds.' I would have loved to have heard what Lisa Marie Presley would have done, but because of the demographics of the LACUNA COIL fan base, and Cristina's reign in the heavy-metal business, it was the right thing to do."

I would have liked Floor Jansen to sing it in my opinion Wink

Here is an update from Dave Mustaine:

"Droogies!

I am starting the pack for the road and really look forward to playing in the States for you again. I know that the boys are packing and pacing back and forth too, right now, and we can probably all count the hours before we take the stage again.

This segment of the tour 'promises' to allow more time for us to play to you, so those of you who saw the Canadian leg, and had concerns about our set-length can "come on down" and join us if you missed us.

Also, as some of you have seen on megadeth.com and myspace/megadeth we have a new and beautiful video with (LACUNA COIL's) Cristina Scabbia for 'A Tout Le Monde (Set Me Free)' and I hope you like it. We are happy with it, and this all came out of an idea to re-do this for a 'B-side for Japan.' And while the title change was not my idea, believe me, being able to see a label excited is nice.

And now it is time to get serious about this record. We are doing some final maneuvers with our last stretch of promotion before the release, and I have been busy on the old "dog and bone" with Andy Sneap working on our edit for the single "Washington Is Next!"

Ah, the inner workings of the guessing games we have to play."

I am hopeful about the possibility of a longer set length. I would be happy if they could play two more songs on the American leg of the tour.

An update from Dave Mustaine:

Droogies!

As I sit in my office, somewhere just before 7:15AM, I am preparing to leave San Diego County for Albuquerque, New Mexico. I have been really enjoying playing Arizona and California so far on this tour, but I am excited to see NM Droogies after the last two Gigantour visits there.

What a metal city!

I noticed some of you are happy with the current set list, and are enjoying yourselves with my/our new found energy. Well, we feed off of you, so thanks!

And we were given 5 extra minutes to play, and the show sometimes starts 5 minutes early, so when that happens (and it usually does), I get a chance to take a break, have a sip, and do an encore.

We may change the set-list, but you know the saying, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” unless you're a tweeker, and in that case you already fixed it ten times and it’s still broken.

I am not even going to try to explain about the single switch from ATLM to WIN! I am just glad you like it; although the truth would “(Set Me Free)”.

Its good seeing the MH guys every day, and I am starting to see details of our Europe trip, which really excites me. I can’t wait to play some new songs to our international Droogs!

Well, my car is approaching and I should leave now, but I wanted to say thank you to my dear friend Andy Sneap. Andy I hope you kept the dartboard, great news on the EMI stuff, and I’ll see you soon.

I need to tell Elliot and Dean that nothing has ever made me this excited about a guitar! I can’t wait to get my new models and watch Glen and Shawn slobber! Yee-haw!!! And to ddrums! I have never seen a cooler drum kit in my life! Thanks you guys!

Lastly, its 17 days to release (16 overseas) and I want to thank you all for your patience while I had to search inside me for this record. It may not completely fill you, because some of you still have holes like I once had (and . . . some you are just fat bastards!), but it certainly fills me . . . for now!

COG3

Update from Shawn Drover:

Just a quick note to say that I am looking forward to this American tour. I hope those of you in attendance will enjoy it as much as we will

Positive vibes,
Shawn.

Got Sleepwalker on a free Roadrunner Cd and it sounds pretty good. I'm not very impressed with the new version of Tout Le Monde though. I prefer the original; my favourite Megadeth track alongside Symphony Of Destruction.
I might buy the album. I do quite like them even if I'm not a big fan of 'thrash'.
