Everyone seems quick to say that Dio cannot sing some of his own material anymore (which is pure bull) but let's turn it on its head. Could the Dio of the 70 & 80's do justice to songs such as I, Lord of the Last Day, et al?

Dio sounds excellent now and part of the reason is that he adapts his style. He doesn't worry about trying to sound like he did 20 years, he writes and sings as he thinks and sound now. Dio's voice is sounding everybit as strong and powerful as it did in the 70's. The change in tone to me introduces experience and wisdom into songs and a greater sense of heavy metal-ness.

As for Holy Diver live, yes it wasn't the finest live show ever filmed and from what I understand there was alot of issues behind the scenes in the build up to that show, but a performer shouldn't be judged by just a single performance - he sounds excellent on those links posted by diodreams (thanks for those!! Smile ). Besides an off night for Dio is far better than an off night for Judas Priest with Halford back in the fold.

Anyhow, if you don't like Dio's vocals now, don't listen to his new material, don't go to shows and don't buy the DVD's. Just sit at home and listen to the excellent Holy Diver. I would consider a true fan to be someone who moves forward with an artist and appreciates his work as a whole. You may not think he sounds as good as he did in the 80's but with the comments here it like he's being forcibly retired - Dio is one of the best vocalists I have ever heard and wrote some of the best music I've ever heard and his last three albums - magica, Killing the dragon and master of the moon to me are as strong as holy diver - to - sacred heart, if not stronger in terms of content and vocal work!!!

Dio sounds excellent and for my money can run rings round singers a third of his age!!!

I love the chabge, in that Ronnie does things with his voice now he didn't before - look at recent live clips - he's started screaming in the breaks and between some lines - it suits the lower tone of his voice so well. And the tone is much more pleasant these days. If I could sing a quarter as well as Ronnie I'd be so happy. These people who say he's losing it - can they sing comparibly to Ronnie? I doubt it!!

No matter what profession somebody has, their skills will diminish as they get older. Fact of life. It must suck to be a famous person who is still doing a good job and to be subjected to everyone comparing them to an earlier era. It happened to Old Blue Eyes; it happened to Elvis; it happened to Jerry Rice; it happened to Ronald Reagan; it happened to everybody except maybe actors who find proper roles for their ages.

That's the difference between a non-famous person like me (television production) and somebody famous like Ronnie. 30 years from now when I'm Ronnie's age, I will be a little slower at the switcher. I'll have more knowledge to build things, but I'll be slower punching live shows. I'll have the luxory of not having to go to my official site and read countless opinions about how my abilities aren't what they used to be when I was 37.

I would hate to think that Ronnie would read some of the comments on here by his fans and let that influence his decision on when to retire from recording and touring. He might figure "Oh, well, even my fans think I don't have it."

That's why I think this thread is important and I thank diodreams for making it. And I think it should always be bumped higher than the threads that are critical.

So: if you still enjoy what Ronnie can do, then keep coming to this thread and let him know it. I want Ronnie to stop only when he wants to, and it seems to me he still has the fire.

========================================

Ronnie, you rock! I can't see this current tour, but I can't wait for the DVD! And I can't wait for another album, regardless of who it is with! Keep bringing the magic!

=========================================

And that's how you do it. So stand up and shout, people!

Cool Cool good point !!!!! very true bildo!!!!!!

To Make just a point or two,
When ronnie was with Sabbath the first time he was about my age and like myself he was in his prime. What you have to think about is this. Ronnie was hitting hsi prime when most guys start to lose there voices i.e. Robert Plant. Ronnie not only hit his prime in his late 30's, he stayed in that prime for over twenty years after.

Yes his voice has a hint of age to it now, but I cant say Ive heard a better voice on a 65 yr old man ever. In fact erase ten years and Im not sure to many 55 yr olds could do what he does either. Ronnie is like a fine wine he get better with age.

The only guy who can challenge Ronnie at 65 is Arthur Brown. He sounds exactly the same as he did in the 60s.

I really like his voice now. I think it is great.. I feel lucky to have been able to enjoy his talents for so long.

Honestly, I don't think I would enjoy it as much if it were the same over such a long period of time.

I enjoy the nuances and choices he makes both now, and in the past. If his performances weren't different now I don't think I would be still listening and enjoying it so much.

It's like a lot of things for me in life. I like some things better about his voice now and some things better about his voice in the past.

I hope to be able to go to more of his performances and enjoy his talents over how ever many years. I don't feel like I am seeing a washed up performer (and I know how that feels).

I think the new songs are great and I expect the concert that I am going to next week will be the best that I have seen. I actually liked the Dragon tour shows better than the Holy Diver shows that I went to.

I say enjoy Ronnie's talents while you still can. It won't be around forever. Alot of people are saying that the current tour is the best that they have ever seen.

I feel that if I go to the show with a fun attitude and appreciate what I am experiencing and not living in the past and having senimental and negative views, I will truly enjoy the show and I will be grateful for seeing it in the future and I will have a great memory in my head forever.

i must say that his voice is full of surprises.when i was young i knew Dio in rainbow and Black Sabbath before i've known about the band Dio.i've known alot of Rainbow Songs but when i've heard "Rainbow eyes"i asked my fathe rwho was singing, the first thing that occured to my mind is"God Bless This Voice".because he can do it so soft and he can turn it hard in other times. but then i felt guilty and thought that i shouldn't have said "God Bless this voice"but should have said"God bless this man"because he has so much things other than his voice.

Rainbow Eyes is such a beautiful song...When I am turning someone on to Ronnie's career and voice, I always play that one, Shame on the Night, Don't Talk to Strangers, Evil on Queenstreet, and One More for the Road to show how great he sounds on the last studio album they did...

And you are right...there is so much more to the man than his voice, which is why he has stayed so interesting and mysterious...on top of that, he is a hell of a nice guy too Very Happy

Ronnie James Dio has been a big influence on my music since I was young and my brother let me listen to Rainbow Live. I instantly connected to Dio's voice and quite simply felt it was the most amazing thing I had ever heard. Literally from that moment I became a fan. I got everything by Rainbow and Elf, then Dio, then Sabbath and I enjoy everything the man has ever done. I have seen him live many times and enjoyed every show. He is still a huge influence on me. I have met him just once and it was like chatting with an old friend - he gave me and my wife 30 minutes of his time after a long, hard gig and I cant tell you how much I appreciated the fact that he was prepared to give up his own personal time to stay and chat - a total gentleman and a memory which ranks up as one of the highlights of my life. I am so looking forward to seeing the Heaven & Hell shows in November.
I don't claim to be his biggest or his most passionate fan. It is a personal admiration for me, I value his music and thank him from the depths of my soul for giving me so many wonderful years of music. Sure I have listened to some albums and been less keen on some but I still get as excited about a new track with Ronnie on it as I did all those years ago - the man is a legend and one of the greatest voices ever. KEEP ROCKING RONNIE!!!!!

Okay, here's a thread to talk about Ronnie's voice.
There are those who say he's lost it...we can discuss how wrong they are here!

Listen for yourself...I pulled these from the Dio on video thread...Thanks Asle_Dale Wink

After hearing these, I would say that he sounds great...maybe he has nights after too many shows without a break when his voice is strained and not at it's best, but he still blows my fucking mind!!!

Discuss...

Okay, now I can say first hand, after seeing 2 shows, 2 nights in a row, that in regards to Ronnie's voice, the man is as strong as ever. I was totally blown away. His range is fucking amazing and I have walked away a bigger fan than before which I didn't think was possible. His voice never cracked, there was never a point where he didn't hold a note till the end....Danimal77, you are dead wrong that Ronnie has lost it. You may have seen a video when he had a cold, which he told me he had in Canada for about 3 shows.
These nights he had no problem and the fans were going nuts.

Ronnie, thank you for your dedication to the music and your fans...you completely and totally rock!!! Wink Wink
