As far as solo works, Holy Diver is clearly his best. It's the only one that is absolutely without a doubt filler-free. Every other album has at least one weak spot.

Magica hasn't...

I would say that my second favorite is Sacred Heart (for more personal reasons) and my third is Holy Diver.

I'd say it does. The Magica story, for sure, the robot voices between tracks, also for sure. And I don't have it in front of me, but there is a track or two that isn't absolutely essential. Not like everything on Holy Diver, at least.

It depends on my mood. If I'm in a pissed off mood, DEFINITELY Strange Highways or Angry Machines, or Inferno. Otherwise it would be Last in Line. The title song is my fav and One Night in the City is a close second.

As for Sabbath, the same applies. If I'm pissed, it's Dehumanizer. Otherwise it's Mob Rules and then Heaven and Hell.

As for Rainbow, it's Long Live Rock n' Roll and then his live stuff with them from 1976-1977.

I only like about 4 songs from Elf. His live Elf from 1971-1972 was exceptionally good though.

Well they are all good albums in their own way and time. As for speaking for myself, Dream Evil get's the most playtime in my CD Player.

At the moment, Dream Evil (although I must admit I Could Have Been A Dreamer occasionally gets skipped - because that chorus is too catchy for it's own good and I hum it all day!)

Whether any album has one, or more, filler tracks is of a purely personal point of view, however it can create the basis for interesting debate.

For me, Dio's problem is that Holy Diver was such a strong album, and set the bench mark very high.

The Last In Line didn't quite make that mark for me, but it is still a magnificent album.

I'd say the same about Sacred Heart and Dream Evil as well.

When it was first released, Lock Up The Wolves was a disappointment for me, and I left Dio alone, preferring to stay with his material up to that point.

So, to respond to the question first put, Dio's best has to be Holy Diver.

Cool

At the moment my fave would have to be Killing the Dragon. Why -
- Awsome track listing with very few, if any weakspots with my fave being Along came a spider, KTD, Better in the Dark and Rock & Roll
- Has in my opinion the BEST Dio guitarist ever in Doug Aldrich
- Has an excellent mix of pace betweeen fast and mid-tempo songs
- And contains some excellent writing

On a side note, my second and thrid faves would have to be Evil or Divine Live in NYC (simply one of the best live albums Dio has sung on) and Holy Diver (simply excellent, especially Invisible, Shame on the night and Caught in the middle).
