I think it was '82. Dio opened for Aerosmith at the San Diego Sports Arena. Then headlining at the (now gone) Fox Theater for Holy Diver. Then back at the Sports Aroma for Last In Line. Again for Sacred Heart. Didn't see him again for several years, then several times in a short period. He played some outdoor festival in Columbus, OH, and I flew there to spend a weekend with a buddy and took in WASP, Dio and Iron Maiden (with Blaze, not Bruce). HOB Anaheim, Brick By Brick in San Diego, Coors Amphitheater in San Diego with Deep Purple & Scorpions. I know there are a couple more.
I think I've seen Dio more times than any other major! Next to him would be Rush (81, 84, 85, 89, 91, 96, 02, 04). _________________ "Ask me about my vow of silence." |

Ist Dio gig at the Hammersmith Odeon May 1985 on the Scared Heart tour. Went up to the show by coach (I was only 15) and met a guy who recorded the whole show on two C90 casettes. I still have copies of the recordings - not great quality but it fills me with great memories - I have burned them onto CD now so they won't degrade in quality further. It was my first ever rock concert and still rates as the best I have ever seen. I have seen Dio 6 times and will be at the London Wembley show in November - can't wait to see H&H.........its going to be VERY special!! _________________ Stand up and Shout!!!!! |

The first time I say them was in The Barrowlands, Glasgow, late 2002. It was a great show and my sister (who is more of an Indie chick!) had to admit that Ronnie had a great stage presence.
Next time was in The Academy, Glasgow in 2005. They played the whole of Holy Diver and got a great reaction from the crowd, much warmth and cheering all night.
I will see RJD on tuesday next in the SECC playing with H&H, again in Glasgow. Can't wait!
Its great that everytime Ronnie comes back he seems to be in a bigger venue than last time. Far from being a "has been"...... |

Dio the man: January 1982 Stafford Bingley Hall Mob Rules Tour
Clearest memory: Sabbath having to stop the song " Black Sabbath" after they overdid the dry ice on Vinny. Didn't it burn him on the ass?!
Dio the band: Monsters Of Rock Festival Castle Donington 1983
Clearest memory: The cheer that went up when Vivian Campbell's guitar kicked in...about 3 songs into the set! Oh, and the encore: "Evil Eyes". |
