I saw Black Sabbathin 1981. The show was OK but nothing to write home about. They all performed well, but the sound system was WAY underpowered! It was about as loud as a band in a small night club, and since it was in an arena, it was tiny sounding. The P.A. looked old and was massive, but it didn't have enough power for such a large venue.
After the first hour, Black Sabbath left the stage and the light show began to go crazy. I was sure they'd come back for an encore, but after ten minutes the crowd grew restless and began chanting "Black Sabbath's Bull, Black Sabbath's Bull". I got louder and louder. Needless to say, 5 minutes later, the arena lights came on and the crew began packing up. No Encore! I think the people were underwelmed by the lack of volume and showed their displeasure by chanting. Kind of a small crowd too, about 3000 people. Black Sabbath has never played at the Norfolk Scope since.

I saw Dio in 1985. WOW, what a show! The lasers, the explosions, the big dragon, the sphinx heads, even Vivian's guitar had lights on it! The sound system was adequate and the overall mix in the Charlotte colosseum was good quality. To this day, it remains the best show I've ever seen. It ruined all future shows as I compared them to the Dio show in 1985.
I still prefer Dio with Black Sabbath vs. Dio's own material. I really think Dio's best work was with Rainbow. Probably because I'm more of a Blackmore fan than an Iommi fan.
I wonder....Has anyone else ever seen Black Sabbath get booed?

I've never seen Sabbath but a friend of my dad's who also saw them on The Mob Rules tour (1981) said they only played for an hour at the Hammersmith Odean in London. They got booed then.

I saw Dio in 85 also. I was at the Spectrum Philly show that was later released on video. It was probably the 2nd best concert I ever attended (the best being Judas Priest in 1988, that show was just sick but that is for another topic). I never saw Dio Sabbath the first time around, however I did see them on the Dehumanizer tour. It was nothing compared to any Dio show I saw (by then I had seen Dio 3 times, the 85 show and the 2 Sacred Heart shows in Philly).

Dio just didn't look like he was into the Sabbath reunion thing. He looked bored on stage with them. Plus they were playing smaller venues. Dio had been playing large arenas and now a few years later he was back with Sabbath playing theater venues. Metal was dying in 92 due to the whole grunge garbage that was hitting the scene. I often thought Dio and Sabbath reunited at that time out of desperation to rejuvinate both of them. This reunion now is different. I am excited to see it and I think they are doing it for the right reasons. It will also be nice to see Ronnie Dio back where he belongs, in large arenas.

I love Dio Sabbath but I personally like the Dio stuff much better. I have never thought much of Toni Iommi as a guitarist. I know he is a legend but I just never cared for his style. Blackmore is a better guitarists however I really dug Vivian Campbell in his day. I'll put Holy Diver and Last In Line over any Sabbath or Rainbow album.

i prefer the group DIO over rjd w/ black sabbath.heaven and hell and the mob rules are cool albums and they rock but from 1983 on the music, the stage shows, the musicians themselves, the lyrics, everything DIO related is far beyond the gloomy slower style of sabbath.i especially like DIOs live versions of classic material(rainbow and sabbath)with viv, craig and doug.better solos and more flash than iommis slower, rythym oriented style.he is an icon in metal and deserves to be.i just like the band DIO more.

Best concert Ive ever seen hands down, Dio Sacred Heart w/ Vivian. I'm excited to finally see Sabbath with Dio, but I know their style is not a exciting as Dio back in the day. Sabbath has always relied on the frontman to do the work. RJD is a great front man, and can do the job better than anyone. His band though had more colorful members who made it more than just him on stage.
