| Some collectors assert that analog sound is better than digital. Is it really so? Do you have the same albums on CD and LP and do you hear the difference in sound? What is better for you? Please vote! |

I'd have to go with CD's. With CD's there is a much clearer sound quality, with no additional crackles or noise. For me the quality sounds about the same but I believe that it is more to with how the album was recorded in analogue or digital which has a greater impact.
Vinyl is better in one respect. Vinyl has less running time which made bands have to write and reherse stronger material to get the most in and from an album. This resulted in less filler when compared to todays CD's where some feel the need to use all 80 mins even if it means filler.
Although soon I see the debate becoming CD's or MP3's as downloads become more prevalent. |

I have a lotta vinyls and a lotta CDs... well, I love buying vinyls for collecting reasons, but the sound of CDs is far better than vinyls' one...
Magic!

I had to go with vinyl only on a really good system though, i have an old Bang&Olfsen turntable that to this very day a album in good condition sounds better then a CD to me, warmer fuller sound. Acrappy Turntable will sound crappy. _________________ GUITARGOD |

Sound is analog. It is impossible for digitial sound to be superior to analog, everything else being equal. Music that was originally recorded in analog almost without exception sounds better on an analog medium like vinyl. The analog to digital conversion that puts the music on cd captures a facsimile of the original sound, but not all of it.
A cd is usually preferable to a scratchy piece of vinyl, but well cared for vinyl is the bomb. If it was pressed back when the original tapes were fresh, it is the best sound you will get. Magnetic tape degrades over time no matter how carefully it has been stored. So a record of a 1971 recording will be from a superior source than say a cd made 20 years later, even if that cd is made from the original master tapes.
To hear a clear example of vinyl superiority, get yourself Last In Line or Sacred Heart on LP and compare to the cd's out there. |

| I try to avoid buying cd's as much as I can. A flawless vinyl sounds far and away better then a cd. Plus with the original pressings you get all the " goodies " that cant be put into a cd. For example Kiss put things into every album back in the hey-day, from cards, to posters, to even a gun inside the Love Gun album. You just cant get that stuff with a cd. These albums are out there for a price. Plus they simply sound better and dont cut off like a cd would. Records fade out when the song ends, where a cd cuts off. |

This has nothing to do with the medium, you know. Whether a song has a cold finish or fades out is up to the mixing engineer. You can do either way on either medium. |

| I recently saw "Bananas" and "Rapture..." by Deep Purple and "Angel of retribution" by Priest on vinyl. What is this? Are they copies from CD's. Or are they really produced from original tapes? |

They are legit vinyl releases from the analog tapes. Bands still record in analog and put out new vinyl releases. Many do, anyway. I have Bananas on vinyl, and it sounds excellent. Don't have Rapture Of The Deep or the Priest one.
New vinyl pressings are often done with the audiophile in mind, so they can be of excellent quality. They're unfortunately sometimes pretty pricey. |

Yeah!!! They are much more expensive than usual CDs
Yet another question. Is it possible to record quadrosound or 5.1 on vinyl? |

| No 5.1 on vinyl. There were quadraphonic LP's, but you had to have a special set up (four speakers), and other special equipment. I've never seen or heard a real quad LP set up, but I imagine it took a special type of pre-amp or amp. Did they need a special cartridge? I don't know. |

I only know CDs. My dad used to have a record player - he was blown away by the sound of a CD.
From what little I remember, I'd have to say CD's sound better. BUT vinyl cases, appearance, and extra goodies (ala Alice Cooper -panties in the School's Out release!! ) are better for vinyl. _________________ Along Came A Spider..... |
