DIMMU BORGIR's upcoming album, "In Sorte Diaboli" — which is scheduled for an April 24 release in North America — has been banned by retailers.

Banned cover

New cd cover

I don't see the problem with the banned one.
They could have just put a Parental Advisory sticker over the nipples. Rolling Eyes

Yet again people overreacting.
I remeber reading in Metal Hammer last year that an instrumental album by Frank Zappa was banned because it had 'Hell' in the title. It really is pathetic.

There seems to be a general belief that heavy metal is satanic and causes all the evil in the world. And while it can be satanic most of the time it isn't and when people start blaming artists like Judas Priest and Ozzy for people committing suicide or going on murder rampages it really is ridiculous.

This topic is making me want to revive my sequential art thread. "Comics are for children so they can't have any adult content." Let's all go to the art museums and put black rectangles on all the statues while we're at it.

Retailers won't sell THAT cover, but they sold Scorpions' Virgin Killer! Rolling Eyes

Was this banned in the US?
It'd really surprise me if it was, the breasts on the beast could easily be covered with the price sticker, and all the other satanic imagery can be seen on other cd covers.
The cover art for Cannibal Corpse stuff is a million times worse. Pictures of them are all on wikipedia if you want to look.

If they can ban things like this, they should ban covers with imagery of God or Allah or something.

Just had a look at those Cannibal Corpse covers and they are the sort of things that should be banned, not this. They'd probably give my nan a heart-attack. Quite cool though.

I really don't think its the ''nipples'' thats has caused this to be banned its the images around it,notice how the star is missing in the new cover....I think its the religious fundamentalist who have may have bitched about it.

I think the boobs could be passed off as man boobs and be done with that part. Look at the cover again and the think of a well know painting of Jesus with the same pose and the church all around him. Then look at the later cover and even though the pose of the satan jesus is the same the rest of it is gone removing it more from what the original cover could be hinting at.

So yes I would say more on religious fundamentalists was this altered for the second more appeasing shot.

I agree that the religious aspects are the reason for its banning.

It reminds me of a similar case with Jane's Addiction:

This excellent album was released with an advisory sticker:

Their following album was released in limited edition with this cover, but then they only sold it with a censored white cover due to the sexual nature of the religious imagery:

Sidenote: You should own both of these albums, as well as their self-titled debut. Wink

The fundies would bitch about the breasts/nipples too.

Do you have a link to the story? Which retailer won't carry this? Wal-mart? Would they even stock this anyway? They, and similar retailers like Target or Kmart don't have huge selections anyway. I guess maybe Best Buy or Circuit City in the US have extensive enough music areas that they might stockDimmu Borgir, but we're hardly talking top 40 here. So I wouldn't have expected to see this in a lot of retailers anyway. Don't more people shop online? I'm sure its available from Amazon or CDuniverse or other online retailers.
