Hey Dio Fans,
This April I'm wanting to play Cozy Powell's Best tracks on my station "The Hard Rock Palace" on Live 365
April will mark his passing 9 years ago and I want your suggestions on what songs from his career you feel represent him best!
I'm planning of Course his work from
Rainbow
Whitesnake
Black Sabbath
ELP

plus his solo CD's and many guest appearances on Rock's Greatest
CD's

I'm planning on adding around 20 songs into the song rotation April 5th

so fire away!!

I don't know any of his solo material but based upon his performance in Rainbow I think he was probably the best rock drummer of all time. If not he is certainly up there with people like John Bonham and Neil Peart.
I would recommend playing Kill The King to represent his Rainbow days especially seeing as he co-wrote it.

I would go with a few of these guys Ian Paice,Clive Burr, Neil Peart,John "Bonzo" Bonham and Cozy Powell to all bring something very different to drumming.
I would not say either was better or worse.

But I must admit...I am well impressed with Clive Burr's skills on the drum kit.
I have many times pressed replay on the track ''The Prisoner'' just so I can here the drumming again.
Also not to forget 'Iron Maiden' and 'Killers' cds...there great drums on these cds as well.

Iron Maiden's Heavy metal though, this is just to ask others if they think Cozy = best in hard rock not rock as in it's entirety, I'd explode trying to decide there. As will others.

I think in Rainbow Cozy was the best in hard rock.

Andy Parker - Ufo
Scott Travis - Judas Priest

Ok then, I think every single thing by Cozy should be considered. I've been raised to worship him (My dad's a metalhead himself and raised me on this stuff)

The stuff he did with Yngwie: Rising Force, Heaven Tonight, Crystal Ball, Deja Vu.

I'll add some more songs to your list for ya:

Black Sabbath: The Headless Cross, The Gates Of Hell, Black Moon
I never noticed his unique strong style on later albums of Rainbow though, you'll need to ask a Rainbow expert on the matter there.

Long Live Rock and Roll and Gates Of Babylon are the only 2 I can think of.

I hope this helps.

I love all these drummers but nobody here mentioned another one of the best drummers ever: Carl Palmer!
this is my list (in order):

1. John Bonham
2. Ian Paice
3. Cozy Powell
4. Nicko McBrain
5. Carl Palmer

Magic!

Mario

I am just giving my opinion that Cozy should not be singled out as being any better or any worse.
And reading what others are posting...they don't regard him as number 1 either.
Remember I said most...not all radio stations and no way am I saying Det Pak's station is like that...but I know guys that run radio stations...and they are not rich from just playing records... Wink

Rainbow did play Heavy Metal my friend. Wink
Not just hard rock....they were also classed as AOR as well.
For me Hard Rock is radio friendly...and I won't listen to anything radio friendly, most Radio stations are just dishonest...we all know the guys in suits get a some greenback...but hey thats a different story Very Happy Remember I said most...not all radio stations and no way am I saying Det Pak's station is like that...but I know guys that run radio stations...and they are not rich from just playing records... Wink

Hell I forgot about Carl Palmer another great.
Simon Phillips again another forgotten hero on the skins.

Holy Magica,
RUNNING my station "The Hard Rock Palace" on live 365 IS A HOBBY,I actually Pay out of my pocket to do this..
April is special for DIO fans... the new CD comes out,and it marks the 9th year of the passing of Cozy,I was fortunate to see him in 86 with ELP,and I simply wanted DIO fans here to help me pick out Cozy's best work for remembering him next month.
