I finally came across the Elf albums, and other than about 3 tracks that make me want to rip my eardrums out, I really enjoyed these albums. I also listen to other genres of rock than just heavy metal though. Is there anybody here that listens primarily only to heavy metal that have heard the Elf albums? What was your take on them? Did it weird you out to hear Ronnie singing stuff like "Hootchie Kootchie Lady?"

I like the Elf albums persoanlly, generally I'm not into much bluey based rock like the albums are set in, but i really enjoyed more or less all the tracks I've heard whcih is 2nd and 3rd album, plus about 1/2 of first. Have yet to buy 1st one, but probably will within the year. It did sound a little weird the first time, but then i just took it for how great the music sounded.

The only possible criticism I could level at the Elf albums is the production, they sound fairly low budget and rather dated now, but ths quality of the songs and musicians still shines through. If you're a Dio fan they are a must - you really need to know where his rock career really started.

No, it never weirded me out. The production quality is not as later stuff but none the less it is still good. I like a lot of the pre-Elf as well. But then I listen to Classical music as well, the first metal gawds.

I was listening to Butterfly Ball...Love is all...sounds like Ronnie must have been into Magical Mystery tour when recording this song... Amazing how his lyrics have progressed & changed moods through the years...

What I find interesting about the Elf albums is the different sounds in the songs. One track may sound just like the Allman Brothers and the next may be reminisent of Joplin. I even hear some Hank Sr. in a couple of those tracks. Regardless, the overall tone is 100% seventies music.

Is anybody familiar with Ronnie's music before Elf? Question

The Elf Albums are great. Never More has lyrics similar to Dio's later work.

I had butterfly ball once a long time ago. It had some glimpses of the future, but nothing that got me very excited. Pretty standard 70's hippy stuff.

They should reunite and do a musical version of the Elfquest books.

Yes, I have some interesting albums like:

Ronnie & The Redcaps (1958-1961)
Ronnie & The Prophets-Live at Domino's (1963)
Ronnie & The Prophets (1961-1967)
The Electric Elves (1967)
The Elves (1968)
The Elves-Live at the Beacon (1971)
The Elves-Live at the Bank (1972)

Yes i listen Ronnie singing live in 1963 !!!! (i was not there, from the cd i mean Razz Razz )
Can you imagine that, they didn't even knew what metal was that time...

There´s one song I realy love, because I think it was the rising of the Rainbow-idea.
It´s "The Rape of Andre Lucia".
Great song, but unfortunately only in a live version with terrible sound!

I absolutely love, love, love Elf.

CCB, LA 59, Happy, Black Eyed Husky Woman (when he sings, "I ain't got time to waste, so do the things you're told, give me 7 days of wonder, come and stay beside me" I'm like, 'anything you say Ronnie' Wink ), When She Smiles, Nevermore...

There are more, but I love to hear Ronnie sing like that...beautiful.
