Rainbow: Kill The King

Black Sabbath: Computer God (although from what I hear, Ear In The Wall and Shadow Of The Wind are going to be pretty heavy)

Dio: Pain, Gypsy, Killing The Dragon

In my opinion, some of the songs said here (eg Kill the King, Voodoo and Gypsy) arent particularly heavy, compared to his other stuff anyway. To me, i think Lord of the Last Day is pretty heavy, as is Jesus, Mary... and most of Angry Machines. Sign of the southern Cross on HD Live is pretty heavy, mainly because the guitars are tuned down to D (but then again i guess you could say most of that album is heavy because of that reason). Wouldnt really say any of his Rainbow stuff is too heavy though. Just my 2 cents though Cool

At the moment, we all mentioned songs from the Tracy G. era, this confirms that "Strange Highways" and "Angry Machines" are DIO's heaviest albums!

Those being his two worst albums, that calls into question the value of "heaviness" when it comes to Dio.

Says who? YOU? Oh. I see. You're THE be-all-end-all expert here. Get over it. They ARE the heaviest.

I happen to agree (assuming we all recognize the same criteria for "heavy"), that those albums and tracks listed above are indeed the heaviest.

Doesn't it bug you when people don't write, IMO when stating something like what is the best or worst album? I really don't like the album AM as a whole, but understand that that is only my opinion....many love it. I'm not dogging you MOTSM, just commenting...

As for heaviest...Strange Highways for me...sounds a little Metallica-ish...IMO!! Very Happy

Its a tough one this.....Certainly the Tracy G era is very heavy, probably the heaviest thing Dio has done......but I think you need to define what you mean by heavy. If you are very much led by the music then Strange Highways and Angry Machines are at the top. But I think I speed at night is a very heavy track, just the recording makes it sound lighter. If you are led my vocals/lyrical content then you open a whole new debate.....Dio has written some very powerful lyrics - take throwaway children from killing the dragon or TV crimes from Dehumaniser for example.

Its all a matter of personal opinion, of course, but I like reading what other people think!

My personal choice would be side 2 of "Rising".

A lot of Dio's material is collaborative and there was something quite special about the Dio/Blackmore/Powell axis. Rising was an incredibly dark and intense album which was enhanced by the backing orchestration from the Munich Philharmonic. This, to me, takes the music to another level and it becomes magnificent in the depth of its power and the sheer excessiveness of the material.

Dio's done some stunning things since and probably will do so again but this remains something I return to time and again. Absolute class Cool
