The band Dio has only ever had two drummers; Vinny Appice and Simon Wright, who do you prefer?
My vote goes to Vinny Appice |

I luv vinnie cuz he's the original Dio drummer and worked with dio in Black Sabbath...
Simon is veeery skilled too... especially his drum solos are catchy. He plays with emotion too... |

I don't think eithor one is better than the other but I went with Appice just because he was the original drummer _________________ Check out the world's only all-female tribute to Iron Maiden, The Iron Maidens

Simon delivers in the songs but his drum solos I don't find that impressive.
My vote goes to Appice.
Of course Cozy Powell is the best Dio has played with. See him shine on for instance Still I´m sad on the Rainbow DVD. |

I have to say Appice for his solos and work with the original band. Just killer drumming on those albums.
Simon is great for the classic and new renditions as well, but I sometimes can't dig his solos as well. _________________

I checked out the Voice of Rainbow with Black Sabbath during the Heaven And Hell tour and thought Vinnie Appice was the worst drummer I had ever seen. My uncle filmed a concert and said the band talked about replacing him. I was surprised and disappointed that Ronnie choose Vinnie when he founded Dio. Simon Wright isn’t in the same class as Cozy Powell but he’s certainly much better than Vinnie. _________________ The Legendary Remorseless Crusader Almighty

What if Simon Wright checks this forum and he reads this topic? He would be very disapointed that some of you rather have Vinni then him! He would be disincouraged and maybe he can't sleep for nights because of this...
Or he is going to give the best he can to show you that he is very good, better then Vinni!
I voted for Simon Wright, but I think they are both great drummers. Can't really say who's the best, only that they play different. _________________ You're Breathless, ready to burn

Well, what if Vinny checks the forum? What about his feelings?
They're pro drummers. They've both heard criticism before, this is nothing new, I'm sure they can take it.
Vinny in his prime was certainly better than Simon has shown to be. Is he better now? Maybe so. I think Simon is an average pro-drummer, nothing special. He seems to have improved since his days with AC/DC. Or maybe this music is just easier for him to play and suits him better.
What track on a Dio album (or AC/DC if you want) is Simon's best? I'm not sure that I hear anything that really sounds creative or stand out. He did a nice job on KTD (the song). But I can think of many more tracks where I am impressed with what Vinny did, as compared to Simon. |
