I really don't want to step into a fire and get my leg lit aflame here, and I've got to admit that I have only scanned through most of this, but I think I get the picture. All I want to say on my behalf is that being a musician does not give you authority on musical taste, bobby66. I have known many musicians in my life, both good and bad, interesting and boring, and their musical tastes were extrememly unpredictable, and often just plain abominable.
Speaking from personal experience, I have played a few gigs in my friend's bluegrass band (I play banjo), though I'd never name myself as a pro/experienced musician, I can keep in time and come up with some interesting breaks. So I guess I'm a musician too, of sorts. When people as me what my favorite bands are and I tell them Dio, Opeth and Blind Guardian (and if they realize that these are metal bands), they kind of give me a sideways glance, like WTF is up with this banjo player?
The thing is, I don't take it further than that. They shoot their quizzical glance, and I just smile. If I started pontificating about how I was right and they were wrong, then well, I think I could expect the conversation to degenerate into a rant...kind of like your posts in this thread. See, musical tastes are like that. Hard to change and hard to take criticism without taking it personally. Not like I really need to tell you or anybody this;( please don't take this as preaching!).
I've got to give props to the people in this thread who have taken the high road and ignored bobby's ignorant and increasingly nonsensical prattle...because it's hard to do when the ranter thinks of himself as an authority.
Back on topic, of course there was a time when I used to not like black metal or death metal, or any sort of metal in general, actually. The one thing I've learned from experience of overcoming that transition from hate to love is the virtues of the benefit of the doubt. I would never have even gotten past the first thrity seconds of the first death metal song I took seriously if it weren't for that little voice in my brain that said, "maybe these vocals were intentional, and maybe everything is just as it should be.. Give it a chance." Side note: it's a lot easier to "get into" black metal by listening to viking metal bands like Ensiferum because of the less "disturbing" atmosphere and use of folk instruments/melodies.
Hoping that one more person will get past the elitist metal stereotype...I'm the Stranger.
And I, I'm darkness, I'm anger, I'm pain

I completely agree, that's exactly how I got into black metal. The first band I listened to was Finntroll and I thought they were amazing. So I naturally thought I should give the other stuff a chance, the stuff I hated before without really listening to it, and I'm so very glad I gave it a listen.
haha, and thanks HiddenSight. _________________ you put your hope into the sky

Free cd!
James Fogarty is someone I admire alot....for what he is doing in music....Long, long ago (in 1997) a 17 year-old musician named James Fogarty recorded an album for his
then-new musical project 'EWIGKEIT'. This album was called "Battle Furies", and was in the early stages of his project 'Ewigkeit's artistic development.
The music recorded was of a death / black metal nature, but unique enough to not sound too much like the other bands of that ilk at the time. These days, there are even bands that play a style of music called "Battle Metal", to which they commit their entire repetoire to playing ! (heavens above !)
A lot of the reviews for that album were positive - here are some examples ;
4/5 - TERRORIZER (UK)
3/5 - KERRANG! (UK)
6.5/10 - ROCK HARD (Germany)
7/10 - HELL AWAITS (Spain)
79/100 - BURN! (Japan)
4/6 - METAL HAMMER (Greece)
70% - AARDSCHOK (Holland)
In 2006/2007 it was decided that this recording had no place rotting on a dusty shelf, so James decided to please all the people that were interested in his work by giving them the album for nothing !
(he is generous like that)
The mix was enhanced for a more heavy sound and new artwork was also supplied.
It was then made available to anyone with an internet connection and an interest in hearing it.
Now it is yours.
James Fogarty (Ewigkeit / Death To Music Prod.) - 2007
You can download the cd here....this is legal becoz the artist wants you to have it for nothing.Remember this lad was only 17 when this was done....I tell you when you think of the age the lad is....this is good stuff!
http://www.deathtomusic.com/ewigindex.htm
Listen to it....and tell me this young teenager does not have some talent....also his website is worth a read..
James Fogarty has severed all ties with the music industry by burning all record contracts (a total of 5), and has systematically burnt the rule-book and re-claimed intellectual copyright over all previous recorded music.
James Fogarty states ;
| Quote: |
"the music industry is dead - a floating turd wqating to be flushed. For far too long, record labels have dictated how and when artists can release music, and have also filled the pockets of many journalists for favourable reviews of their recent "hyped" crap. I'm sick of it, I'm sick of the way the whole arse-kissing music industry works.
As with many artists who have dealt with Earache and found no joy (i'm not going to add to all the stuff said about them - i dont need to), I looked around at other labels and got some offers, but then just came to the realisation that established record-labels are not neccesary for musicians to release music with integrity - in fact, it is increasingly the very opposite
The whole music scene is run by people who know nothing about music what-so-ever, and just want to make cash - that's never what Ewigkeit has been about, and now I'm practicing what I preach - so FUCK THE INDUSTRY !" |
This man has a lot to say....I don't agree with everything he says....but you got to admire him for making a stand. |

someones probably said it already but you have to check out Nile, death metal band that uses egyptian instruments and sings about egyptian themes, great band.
Also Behemoth are a really good death metal band that are highly recomended. There earlier stuff is black metal and is also pretty awesome and you should check out there early work for black metal and Demigod is a good start for their death metal work. |

I like some Nile - although I must admit it's the chanting and stuff I prefer over the heavy stuff.
A question - would King Diamond fit into this genre? The vocals are extreme, just in a different way, and the subject matter is pretty similar, plus the riffs are very death-metall ish in places. Just a thought _________________ Along Came A Spider..... |

i would have to agree with that. Even bands like Forefather who also use a lot of clean vocals as well as teh growls.
Although i didn't get into metal this way, i think my first black metal album i listened to was Darkthrone's Transylvanian Hunger.... |

DARK TRANQUILLITY triumphantly return with "Fiction" in April 2007, a scorching effort that will undoubtedly add an exhilarating new chapter to the genre's storied history. The album was mixed by the acclaimed Tue Madsen (HIMSA, THE HAUNTED) and encompasses all of the elements on which the band built their career: thought-provoking lyrics, shredding guitar work, captivating melodies and sheer brutality. This offering is perhaps best compared to a modern-day version of the group's revered classics "The Gallery" and "The Mind's I", only with more intensity behind it. The blueprint of melodic death metal is now at your fingertips.
Niklas Sundin (guitars) further describes his thoughts on the new album: "Tue Madsen did a fantastic job with the sound, and the result is diverse and exciting enough to satisfy even the most critical of listeners. The 10 songs are extremely varied and showcase all facets of the D.T. experience while breaking new ground as well as reviving some elements that haven't been featured in D.T. songs since the early years. At the moment, we're putting the finishing touches to the packaging as well as preparing for the recording of the 'Focus Shift' and 'Misery's Crown' promo videos. Directing is once again Roger Johansson, who worked with us on the videos for 'Character'."
DARK TRANQUILLITY holds the esteemed distinction as being one of the bands responsible for founding an entirely new genre of death metal in the early '90s, which came to be known as "the Gothenburg sound." Their previous album, "Character", was hailed by critics and fans alike as the group's most savage and dynamic offering yet. They have solidified their fanbase through numerous tours alongside the likes of such genre titans as KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, KREATOR, IN FLAMES, OPETH and SOILWORK, among others.
In late March 2007, DARK TRANQUILLITY kick off the touring cycle for "Fiction" with a massive co-headlining U.S. run with THE HAUNTED and INTO ETERNITY followed by European summer festivals and a full length tour in autumn, revitalizing the genre they helped to create and further cementing their status as one of the scene's most influential metal bands.
"Fiction" track listing:
01. Nothing To No One
02. The Lesser Faith
03. Terminus (Where Death Is Most Alive)
04. Blind At Heart
05. Icipher
06. Inside The Particle Storm
07. Empty Me
08. Misery´s Crown
09. Focus Shift
10. The Mundane And The Magic
11. A Closer End (Japan bonus track)
12. Winter Triangle (instrumental) (Australia bonus track)

The limited album version will include a bonus DVD with live songs, behind-the-scenes footage, last album's "The New Build" promo video and the brand-new "Focus Shift" clip.
Cover artwork was once again created by the band's guitarist Niklas Sundin.
Release dates:

I've been listening to some melodic-death metal recently. In Flames is an awesome band. Clayman, the Jester Race and Colony are fascinating albums by them. Soilwork is another interesting mdm band, but I haven't heard a lot from them ("Natural Born Chaos" is good so far, and I just got "A Predator's Portrait," which sounds good so far). I have Dark Tranquillity's "The Mind's I" and really like it, but a rather dissappointing thing I've noticed about these three bands is that, well, they all kind of sound the same. Blame it on them all trying to have that "Gothenberg sound," I guess. I'll pick up DT's "Character" to give this genre one last shot nexttime I buy a CD.
I also have At The Gates' "Slaughter of the Soul" and it sounds very unique and good, but I'm not sure if this qualifies as "Gothenberg" mdm. _________________ Weird thoughts that don't work,

I have the album Character, definitely good, I love it.
In Flames and Dark Tranquility have band members that have switched between the two, so that would probably contribute to them sounding the same _________________ you put your hope into the sky

I don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but Bathory is an essential black metal band. Along with Venom, they practically invented black metal, and apart from Venom, Bathory invented Viking metal. Under The Sign of the Black MarkBlood Fire Death and Hammerheart are my favorites. Probably the single most influential band in either genre, and, if you go to web forums where there are more Eurpoeans who post there, Bathory is a very highly regarded band. _________________ Weird thoughts that don't work,
