Thought this would be appropriate to post after the one that said he didn't make the top 100. This list was in 2006.

http://www.vh1.com/shows/dyn/the_greatest/103448/episode_this_list.jhtml

There are so many other songs and better ones...I love this one, don't get me wrong, but the VH1 and MTV croud only listens to what's "popular." That is not a reflection on Dio, just on the flocks of sheep in this world. I'm just glad they finally got recognized.

This was also on wilkepedia, "Heaven and Hell remains one of Black Sabbath's best-selling albums, and was their highest charting album (#9 UK, #28 USA) since 1975's Sabotage. The album revitalised Sabbath's fortunes after what many saw as the death of the group following Ozzy's departure."

Uuhhh I knew it would be RITD... what else... Funny how predictable they are. But you know... why bother? They've got their image and we've got ours. It's one thing liking the music and the other thing is understanding it. Let them have their way with lists. Rolling Eyes

Can't really argue that much with that list, maybe just the order a bit. Kind of ironic that it's RITD on the list, a song if I remember correctly RJD doesn't really like.

You remember correctly. He was actually close to destroying the tape with a razorblade when they recorded Holy Diver Laughing But it was the song that finally caught the label's attention back then, and quite a lot of Dio fans seem to love it anyway. I guess RJD has finally come to terms with it or else the band wouldn't play it at each and every show. But yes I guess it's still not one of his personal favorites.

I don't give a shit about "lists", especially from places like VH1, but since there was that posting that he didn't even make the top 100, I had to put this one up.

I guess it just pisses me off to no end the lack of recognition he gets. It really baffles me...

I don't know but sometimes I feel that this lack of recognition is kind of natural. His music is not there to entertain the masses, it's only there for those who understand it. It won't move you when you have no idea what it is about. How many people have actually read - can only cite German authors here - Brecht or Grass? And how many of those have understood these authors... (I for one haven't Laughing ) So it all depends on your predisposition. In case of Dio's music I guess it's not so much about being smart enough or too smart, it's about opening up your heart. Not everyone can do that, not everyone wants to do it.

See what happened to us....? Wink

That's incredible. I am not a fan of today's VH1 or MTV for that matter, but give credit where credit is due.

This is not a list of the 40 greatest metal songs, more a list of the 40 most commercial hard rock/metal songs.

In my top 40 list Welcome To The jungle wouldn't even be included, Ac\Dc's Highway To Hell would have been ranked way higher than Back In Black, Ozzy's Suicide Solution is a better song than Crazy Train (in my opinion off course)

This is just a list of the songs that have had most commercial successful for VH1, or are the most played in VH1.

Some of this song would have made it to my top 40 list too, and some would not make it..

But how they can even suggest that Rainbow In The Dark is greater than Holy Diver, Don't Talk To Strangers, We Rock and other great Dio songs, I don't understand.......

So true, so true. This is a list about the most commercial stuff, not about the best for sure. RITD is great, but there are far greater.

When I have to give my email address over the phone, I always have to spell it because everyone thinks its dodreams, as in d o dreams. I had one guy say, "is that Dio, that old guy who did RITD?" I was happy that someone finally knew him, but also irritated as hell by his comment.

The "popular radio" listening croud, which I never have been, knows Dio for RITD because they've never heard anything else. And lets not forget the video. Ronnie in his skin tight pants and high heeled boots, singing on top of a roof...cute Wink .

.......yup....I agree 100%. Besides, these so called "lists" are drawn up by folks who think more about frilly, flashy, shiny things than the nitty, gritty, dark realms of true metal....Its their way of trying to keep the watcher from changing the channel.

Well if it's a commercial list how come "Smoke on the water" is only #37??

I don't get this lists anyway...

Dio is not only for smart or big-hearted people. He has a particular vision not everyone understands. He hits a specific note. It's like a sign only some of us know the meanning of.

I don't disagree. As far as opening one's heart many simply do not want to take the time to give a shit about other things. They are too busy can be their retort or life is short etc. We live (or at least over here on ourside of the pond) in a Bite Size Chewable Society. If you don't put the damn thing on a postage stamp then most won't read it. They want to read less but make more decisions based on less info and yet wonder why things are so fucking chaotic and screwed up. We have a pink elephant running around but no one wants to recognize we have this fucking elephant running around. All they see is the poop and bitch that you are not doing your job of getting rid of the poop. You try to explain that if we got rid of the elephant they freak out because you went outside that postage stamp limit. Yet the furniture is getting thrash and there is shit everywhere. The person who walks up to you and says, "Hey, how are you?" is not really looking to know how you really are. What they are looking for is for the illusion that you give a shit about them by simply making the same greeting back.

I think Ronnie's work asks us to actually give a shit and for many that is something they simply do not want to do.

As far as lists go they are typically popularity lists and we need not put so much weight on them as being a gourmet form of critical analysis of that person's work. Speaking of which if we had a list of favorite foods we most likely would not find most gourmet meals at the top of that list but a lot of food that is actually crap for us.

VH1 is jyst trying to promote grunge bands by putting them next to bands like Dio and Black Sabbath and the god-like Alice Cooper.

That doesn't suprize me when Curt Cobain got the number one most influencial person in rock a few years back. He may have helped the whole grunge thing, but come on, that was f'ing stupid.
