There, I said it.
Everyone's always up Stargazer's ass. Why? Light in the Black rocks harder by a longshot. It's full of classic Dio Harmonies. It's epic. It's about coming home.
In a blind taste test, 5 out of 7 people unfamiliar with the product preferred Light in the Black to Stargazer.
Light in the Black pwns noobs.
Stargazer is monotonous and the verses are boring. Okay, the chorus is strong but the slight Arabic mode is already covered in Gates of Babylon.
A Light in the Black is a 10
Stargazer is a good solid 7.5
Discuss. |

Well, "Light In The Black" is such a great song but I think "Stargazer" is better... In my opinion, "Stargazer" is one of the best rock songs!
I love those Arabian scales, they're wonderful!!!
Nobody had ever sung so good like Ronnie did in that song...
and Ritchie's solo is one of the best solos ever!
I know, "Light In the Black" solos (keyboards solo and guitar solo) are beautiful as much as Stargazer solo...
Well, they are two great songs that wrote a part of Rock history, so it's difficult to decide which song is better!
BTW, my own preference is for "Stargazer".
Magic!

both great songs, but I prefer Stargazer.
Stargazer: 11/10
A Light At the Black: 10/10 _________________ You're Breathless, ready to burn

Actually, the "slight Arabic mode" (if it is that) you speak of in Gates Of Babylon was already covered in Stargazer. You're aware of the linear stream of time, right?
Stargazer rules. A Light In The Black is an excellent tune, but Stargazer is the pinacle of Rainbow, imo. |

...When I'm in love with a song, no explanation can convince me that another one is greater. So I guess it's quite useless to say "why" Stargazer is a better song. I think it's a masterpiece too, but this is not going to change the way you feel for A Light in The Black.
Just to say a few things... Not only musically is one of the greatest song ever... But you said something about the epic quality... "A Light" is about coming home. Well Stargazer is more complex on that side. There are so many ways you can think of it's story; you can interpret the lyrics; the symbols; the way the ideas fit into music; the imagery; the changing feelings etc. As a story, it's hugely representative for Ronnie!
But maybe for you it's A Light In The Black, why not? We all love that song after all. |

Well, here comes the minority, I have to agree "A Light in the Black" to me, is liked more and gets more listens than "Stargazer" Both are great, but "Light" just sounds a lot better to me.
and by the way, don't ever say "pwns" _________________

Stargazer and A Light in the Black are both classics featuring great solos from Ritchie in his prime. I have never understood why full-length versions of Tarot Woman, Starstruck and A Light in the Black were not added to the set list after Rising was released. _________________ The Legendary Remorseless Crusader Almighty

I like Stargazer better...but the one two shot of Stargazer and A Light In The Black is one of the best there is on a rock album. I also feel the cover art for Rising is one of the best also. I had it on a dungaree jacket back in the 80's...have no idea where it is these days.

Yup, minority speaking up again.
"A Light In The Black" is by far the better track.
Although "Stargazer" has near iconic status amongst Rainbow fans, "ALITB" pounds it's way along and is a far heavier sound.
One thing I'd loved to have seen live was "Stargazer" and "A Light In The Black" being played back to back. It could've been 20 minutes + of pure musical heaven.

ALITB and Stargazer were played back to back in very early shows. I have it on a bootleg from The Beacon Theater in 1975 or 1976. From what I heard, poor Cozy was exhausted by then end of those 2 songs...understandable.

| ALITB was performed a few times in '76 after Rising was released. The 12-14-76 Hiroshima bootleg is incidentally titled, A Light In The Black, and of course features that classic track! |
